I really enjoyed this interview as someone who had had HIV for just over 20 years. I was dianosed in 2003 when I was 20. I was an I.V heroin addict, started at 14, so thats most likely how I got it but you never know, could have been sex as I was a sex worker while an addict. Have been in 100% recovery since 2010. I didn't start taking meds until around 2014, because my numbers seemed fine to me and I was afraid to start, but Drs encouraged me to start taking it then before things become not so good. Became undetectable in 6 months .Been on the same meds, Biktarvy, for 4 years now. Works great for me, I'm undetectable and have been for years. My health is good. Nobody, except a few close friends, my Drs and pharmasist, even know I have it. You wouldn't know by looking at me that I have it. I haven't even told my own parents. I wish I was in a place where I could be more open and not feel the need to hide it so I really admire you both and all others out there who are so open about it but I'm working on that.I'm so thankful that the meds that they have these days are available because I know my situation would be a lot worse if it wasn't

Excellent interview. As a 63 year old gay man, I was one of the few lucky ones who never became infected with HIV. But living with the fear and tragedy of watching friends die so young was very traumatic and mentally debilitating. It took many years of therapy to recover to a point where I can function , appreciate and enjoy my life again. ❤

I was diagnosed in January 1997 (at the tender age of 36). My t-cells were at 179 at that time. I was fortunate that I had no opportunistic infections (and never had them) at that time. I failed the Crixivan then the Viracept. In 2000, my t-cells dropped to 89 and I thought "This is it". Fortunately for me, Kaletra was in Phase III and I was admitted in by my doctors (whom I am forever grateful!) into the Phase III trial. Kaletra saved my life. I got to high 300's on my t-cells. I am currently on Genvoya and undectable (less than 25 copies). I have even had my t-cells hit over 900! My doctor detests my fixation on my count since he always maintains its the "log" that is important. But still... The only side effect was lipoatrophy, Not horribly, but I did lose a LOT of my subcutaneous fat, causing me pain. I am really excited about the AGT phase I!! That looks very promising! My partner of 27 years is really lucky. He never had a drop in T-Cellls and has only in last few years been on any drugs. He could be classified as a long term survivor. My current Doctor (last 16 years) always shows my legs to the interns to show them what lipoatrophy looks like since hardly any new patients get that anymore! LOL! I don't mind in the least.

In the early days without as full an understanding of the virus as we have today, people had to do self-analysis to find what you could do to counter the effects of HIV on your body. Like what was said, you naturally look around you to see what is happening with others in the same situation as yourself and why others died and not yourself.

Mark, as you said, you’ve been a guinea pig so I would like to suggest that you might be on the verge of experiencing two other major changes.
Both of these changes I am alluding to will be serious game changers.
Game changer one: We have much better tools for developing cutting edge therapies, tools such as CRISPR, genomic medicine, etc. The potential of these technologies are so huge that I think we will have an approved HIV cure by 2030.
Game changer two: Human age reversal. There has been so much progress made in this area that, again, I think we will start seeing approved anti-aging drugs around 2028 -2030.
Mark, you may very well be an early beneficiary of both of the above.
Raif, you are still a young man and you have a LOT of life ahead of you. The therapies I mentioned will also play a significant role in your life. Add to this the fact that we are seeing tremendous progress in AI, quantum computing, genomic medicine, and nanotechnology, the future looks very bright.
Wish you both all the best.

all these medical technological advancements are always extremely expensive and only the rich will be able to afford them at first. it will take at least 20 years until ordinary people with ordinary salaries will have access to new treatments. just look at ARVs for HIV they were extremely expensive in the beginning but have started to come down in price but are still expensive for many people.
