  • Isometrics are gaining a large following around the globe
Coaches such as @alex.natera @jaketuura @christian.thibaudeau.thibarmy @vandykestrength @strong_by_science @cal.dietz @billmillertraining have brought them back into the game . I’d like to think I’ve also had an impact 😜
I believe there are 3 main rules for using isometrics as a sports prep tool.
    1. Find a way of providing knowledge of results & visual feedback/data otherwise you’ll lose the athlete because he/she will have no idea if it’s having a training effect? Here I’m using the GSTRENGTH @exsurgo.tech & @whatsthatstrap during BFC & FFC skill stability iso-push (overcoming)
Use it to measure progress. Are you now stronger in these key positions. Are you better at managing force at these anchor points?
    2. Second one & essential for all sports that happen so quickly such as fast bowling, the understanding that without a dynamic component that’s the same pattern as the iso exercise you will have limited transfer of training. Getting strong in an isometric exercise will not make you run faster, bowl faster or lift more.
You can become really efficient an strong in a type of contraction without improving other types
I’ll always contrast an iso-push BFC/FFC / Delivery with a complete skill or a SDE ballistic exercise
You can either do as a contrast in same session or in a different session 4hrs later
Why? You can recruit up to 10% more muscle fibers during a max iso action than during a maximal concentric or eccentric one. Since fiber recruitment is one of the key neural factors affecting strength, frequent isometric training can program your nervous system to be more efficient at recruiting more fibers.
    3. There needs to be at least 3 positions in the movement to enhance the transfer of training . Whether that’s a barbell movement that your trying to strengthen or a skill that your trying to change/stabilise or enhance.
Also remember yielding & overcoming have a different training effect.
It’s stage is identifying which one will help you? Do you want to rate of force transmission or rate of force development in the skill/exercise your aiming to enhance
