  • Brewing technique and a lot of BLAB too, for the Clever Coffee Dripper. Yes, it's like an infomercial but without the entertaining foil of the naive rube in the audience. Boo! Anyway, this is a manual, pour-over drip brewer that has a stopper, so the hot water and coffee can infuse (like a french press) for however long you like...

    This was very helpful. Thank You! Thank you for the comparison between 2 different approaches and thank you for demonstrating the Clever coffee dripper. I was searching for the dripper so I got 2 for 1.

    Just thought I'd chime in. I'm really appreciative of all the pour over videos of late. You may think they are wordy or dull but I think they're great and informative. I like the fine details you add about measurements etc I'm glad you have the time to do all of it. It makes me look again at what I'm doing to make sure I'm getting the most out of my ccd. Thanks again!

    I purchased more green beans from SM recently and decided to get the large CCD. I saw this video before and it is why I decided to get the CCD in the first place. I just reviewed the video this morning to double check the 20gr coffee to 350gm water ratio and my first cup through the CCD is great! Thank you for this video.

    ive gone completely low tech for my coffee, Im convinced there is no machine that can produce the flavor of hand made coffee, no not technivorm either. Hand grinder, kettle, and an aeropress or clever dripper

    I've never seen a clever coffee dripper before so I freaked out a little when you started pouring water into it when it wasn't over a cup.

    Some additiona data on water volume measurement vs. water weight:
    As water heats, it loses density. At XXX degrees, 1mL of pure (distilled) water weighs 1g, but for 200F distilled water, 1mL weighs only ~0.963g. Hence, at 200F, 350g of water takes up ~363mL of volume. In practice, your numbers may be slightly different, as the mineral content of water changes the density --- these numbers are for distilled water, with no mineral content.

    Thanks for this! After using the Aeropress for a while I plan on switching over to the Clever as the silicone part of my Aeropress plunger has been losing its ability to keep a seal and has caused some messes. I’ve been using a concentrate and dilute style of recipe for my Aeropress and it’s cool to see that a similar method can be used with the Clever. While I most often make coffee just for myself, I’m thinking I can use the concentrate and dilute method to make more coffee than what the capacity of the brewer holds in the event I’d like to make a larger batch for guests.

    Hey Tom, I love your videos. I recently bought a clever and am using a Hario mini mill to grind my coffee. I am still getting the hang of the grind settings. Any advice on the number of "clicks from fine" to use on the Hario?

  • @SweetMariasCoffee

    @psalmbh Have not had great luck with Swissgold or similar filters. Allows fine particles through and also tends to clog the stopper mechanism...

    I just use a Melitta Portable drip ............I simply Plug the hole at the bottom with a stopper............Let the water and grounds sit for a few minutes, then pull out the plug and let it drain..........Then add additional water if making a larger yield.
    Pretty simple method. I do this at my desk at work without any problems or complications. And it tastes great.
    I've used this method for quite few years now.

    Very recently got a Clever but haven't made a good cup yet, so this video was very helpful. Thank you. Do you use water at or near boiling point? I'm at high altutude so water boils at a lower temp here. I use 205 F for pour-over.

    just recieved my CCD from you today (along with a 20lb back of Kenyan green beans. i cannot say how good of coffee this thing makes. i think it would be pretty slick if they incorporated a spring loaded timer that made a ding at 1 and 3 minutes... maybe put it in the handle or something. thanks for the video. i made some this afternoon and the grind was much coarser and the results were not nearly as good as the cup i'm enjoying now. thanks!

    I just saw that on your homepage you instructions says to stir after 1:30 min and to let it drain at 4:00 but here it's 1 min and 3 min how come ?
    I haven't used it a lot but had some pretty good results with an Organic Sumatra in it. I usually don't like too much earthiness in my cup but this makes for a very sweet cup.
    I only had brown filter #4 around and even after washing it two times filling the cone I could taste the paper and I let it steep for 3 min.

    Ok, sorry to post off-topic, but what is that music in the background at 5:45? It sounds familiar but I can't place it and it's bugging me.
    On-topic: thanks for this and other videos on the Clever Dripper. I was under-extracting previously, but following your tips I am enjoying this brew method more than before.

    The same procedure is true of cold brew - making a concentrate and adding cold water to it after its brewed will soften the bitter notes and bring out cocoa flavors. Works especially well with coffee that is not amazing when brewed hot. Cheers!

    @katzparov I use the larger Melitta Portable so that I can easily make up to 48 oz of coffee.......Boil my water in the microwave..........Using the heated water from the water cooler........so that 16 oz boils at about 1 1/2 minutes......Otherwise it may take around 5 to 6 minutes to boil.

    How many minutes exactly the draining time if u got correctly grind size?

    • @sweetmariascoffee6835
      @sweetmariascoffee6835 5 років тому

      Drain time will vary depending on factors like your filter and how long your coffee had been resting for before grinding. A normal drain time would be about 30-45 seconds but we have heard of some folks experiencing drain times of an entire minute.

    The Aeropress is a great way to make coffee. Here's a video we made about it. It's a little old but still gets the point across. You can find it in our UA-cam channel...just search for "Aeropress".

    I've had two CCD's over the years. Got them before they ever got big. The owner of Conservatory for Coffee, Tea and Cocoa in Culver City recommended it to us and said it was the best way to brew coffee. However, after having two of these that eventually cracked and broke (second one was babied with respect to temperature spiking) in less than 4 years, we went with the Bonavita ceramic immersion brewer. Never looked back. After two years, this bad boy is still going strong. The CCD's I've had just cracked and started leaking, and also had poor seal performance after awhile. Just spend the extra money and get a more durable immersion brewer. I hate the CCD's now.

    • @Mrch33ky
      @Mrch33ky 7 років тому

      I have 2 CCD's one of which is 6 years old at this point. To clean I just run hot water through them and store upside down. I use them every day at work. Yes the handle cracked but I fixed it with crazy glue. But at home I use the Chemex brewer since I can take more time. I think both the Chemex and the CCD work great and the new CCD's are BPA free. I've never had an issue with them leaking.

    From the fully closed position, your setting should be about 6-10 clicks. Any more would be putting you in French press territory. Feel free to experiment and adjust to fit your taste.

    "OMG, I wanted to poke my eyes out."
    Please do. This is an instructive video made by a coffee supplier, not a porn studio. This means that they concentrate their attention on COFFEE, not video production. If you're more concerned about the aesthetics of the video rather than the informational content, then you should look elsewhere.
    Major Fail.

  • @vildachaya36

    OMG, I wanted to poke my eyes out. This was so painful. I know the focus is supposed to be on the coffee but this was so poorly filmed, framed, executed and written that it was more like an exercise in patience. If you are going to make a video of how to brew coffee or how to wipe your tuchas, have a script. Set up the camera so that we don't lose your hand, head, etc. I don't need to listen to you narrate for two minutes while I look at tumblers of coffee doing nothing. Major Fail!
