There was no need for a remaster to Warcraft 3 to begin with. The whole failure stems at the inception that players needed the same game with better graphics (while the original was still good enough even 20 years later). They were just unable to deliver a worthy Warcraft 4 successor because they didn’t have the talents so they gave us this garbage instead.
A remaster done well like age of empires 2 definitive edition would have been sweet. Update some outdated control things (max control group size) and vamp up the looks maybe a little. But what they did was awful instead.
It's not even about talent, SC2 devs were told few years ago that Blizzard is just done with RTS games. They don't have talents because they weren't interested into hiring ones in the first place. Personally I actually liked idea of completely revamped campaign and new graphics but Blizzard just promised but didn't delivered so there is that.
Also how would W4 fit in to the WoW timeline? Will the campaigns play out the same "time" as WoW. You could bypass this with time travel shenanigans but after Warlords of Draenor that might not be well received. If other companies can profit from modern RTS than Blizz might reconsider but strategy's been dead in their eyes for a bit.
@@DrownedLamp "How would W4 fit into the WoW timeline?" It wouldn't, nor should it even try to. WoW's timeline is an absolute clusterfuck and any RTS should've taken place in an alternate timeline written for an RTS instead of an MMO.
I dont know if you're gonna see this but about the louder "S" sounds you hear. You are absolutely right. My fine guess would be, that when they made the original WC3 they added a "De-esser" effect to the voiced sounds (with lots of other effects) to make it sound more smooth. Hence it's name, A de-esser makes high frequencies sounds quieter like "Sss". BUT it may be one of the last things they added to the sounds, and then made a seperate version in the end, which is a really common thing in production. Like a consolidated version with the De-esser. And then when they dug up the old files to create WC3 Reforged, they may have either lost the de-essed versions or just didnt bother to find and use the de-essed versions. Quite interesting nontheless what happened in that regard, it seems like a really weird mistake.
in that case i think it sounds better for electronic weapons however that is extremely lazy for them not to revamp the entire sound system and instead just fiddle with it
I think it should also be mentioned that all the dubs (except English) have been completely redone. The new dubs are significantly worse than the original ones. Unfortunately, this doesn't get much attention since the big Warcraft 3 content creators are playing the english version. I would like to see the original dubs used again if there is a Reforged relaunch. I wonder why the dubs were reworked in the first place, but I think it's because all the character names have been translated into their respective languages (as is already the case in World of Warcraft).
I have to ask, what lenguage you use? Becouse since im a kid i play it on spanish and the change of all voices, specially Arthas voices that was the best on that game was like a punch in the balls
@@Kayther33 I played the German version for many years. And in my opinion, the old German dubbing was a masterpiece. The new version is just loveless in comparison.

I think you explained why that was so at some point, and I’m not criticising you for it. But at the time I felt like I was going crazy because it was just so abysmal. So yeah, satisfying to hear you explain everything I hated about it so eloquently.
They originally added the new sounds to REGULAR wc3 tft as well. That first day when it switched over... knowing I wouldn't see that classic opening menu... with the Lich King castle... and the iron plated doors closing... its sad its all gone. LET ALONE the first game I played where everything sounded different.
The orb of corruption audio and video is so iconic. It's a shame they changed it. The orb from destroyer (like a crystal prism) is also very unique.. now it's just a generic magic ball.
I am Glad to find this Channel, Back in the day I played a lot to wc3 then I switched to sc2 but I always missed wc3, is great to see Grubby still playing this :) I remember to watch replays from "wc3replays" webpage, an a lot of different patches for ex. I remember games where Grubby playing with orcs put the FS behind the mine with all entries blocked by units to try to survive the harass of a buffed warden complete impossible to stop, can you imaging the only thing an orc could do was just to be inside of his town for quite a long time... would the original game still working? or I would need the Reforged? younger people watching this game nowadays: Can you tolerate the graphics? for me are great but I guess is because it is something sentimental :) There are still people playing the original ROC? it was quite different to TFT different rules and strategies.
You can do slightly different voices and it still being clear though, sc2 zealots dying do have variations, but you can always tell it's a zealot, or a marine, or a zergling.
But that's why it works in SC2 and not in WC3. In SC2 I never have issues telling if it's my Zealots or High Templar that just died from the sounds, in WC3:R I have so many issues trying to tell what died by the sound. He only showed Orc and Night Elf but I think it's even worse for Human, the new sounds for their units dying are way too similar to each other.
I am so glad you mention that. WC3 was one of my first real games that I played with my best friend and it became so nostalgic every time we played it, especially the more years past. In the german version of the game they reworked every voice-line of every unit. All those inside jokes me and my friends had with these goofy voice-lines like "they came from...behiiind" were completely ruined with new voices that all sounded dull and boring. I now only play the game in english so I dont have to ruin my nostalgia everytime I start the game.
It's so frustrating because we clearly know what the game is lacking, we have our wish list of things we wanted and yet somehow Blizzard did everything but what we wanted. They said they didn't want "pixar" graphics but it turns out, in a RTS game with many units those detailed new models go against the visual clarity of the game. Same thing with death sounds, we've been hearing these units die for years and suddenly they changed the sounds for god knows why. If there was a rock solid aspect in W3 it was AUDIO. It was the thing that was not to be reforged, it was already good. We only needed reforged graphics and reconnect (a more powerful map editor too) but no, we got nothing. It's like asking for a glass of water and getting it at boiling temperature.
Audio is super important. I had over 18 years of building neural pathways (quitting and coming back to the game) with their gameplay including audio triggers. They not only took away those audio triggers, some of the new ones sound grotesque and repellent.
Imagine listening to the battle of those archers vs Thrall like 2-3h straight on a proper sound level. After that, next thing I would want to do is to eat some pills from the headache.
Every time I see the Reforged graphics I cry a bit... It still hurts... Blizzard's betrayal is still the most painful for what is one of the best games ever. It hurts even more with the superb remasters other games get. It hurts EVEN MORE knowing one of those superb remasters was StarCraft 1...
Someone hire this man for quality control of an RTS already. He clearly has the ability and the know how to articulate the issue and the forethought and passion to build something of high quality. He also understands that the employee themselves aren't the issue - it's the oversight, approval, and pace of the project that was the issue. Very intelligent and empathetic approach to the problem. Not just complaining to complain.
That's funny with the 's' sounding loud. In audio engineering there are plugins for exactly that, called de essers. Thanks for the thorough comparison, lol, didn't know there's so many differences.
Warcraft 3 could have been the comeback of the golden RTS era, but Blizzard being Blizzard :( The death sounds are just an insult to original voice acting
What ive red is that Blizzard changed the voices and sounds because the sounds from old warcraft are not in "HD" quality, so they made new one. also they wanted to enlarge the campaigne with new dialoges between the charackters (wich they never did) is also a reason for the new voices and sounds. I peosonally prefer the old one too. And another thing the tree of live from nightelf looks so small and weak in reforged. in classic it looks like a massive big tree and here is same sice like a moonwel
haha i think the lore is bigger in this one and the amount of carelessness to construct a tree on the moonwell is baffling DID I MENTION THE GRASS MATCHES THE SAME COLOR AS THE BUILDINGS?
i think if they improved on the technical side of connectivity and implementing reconnecting into the game, maybe some changes to how graphics are handled (resolution etc) and the game would perfect as is. But no, they had to ruin it completely
I used to watch replays of tournaments back in early two thousands and Grubby was easily one of the best, I didn't even knew what he looks like back then so when I found his youtube channel I was blown away that he's still playing W3 that's how good and well-made this game is and its disgusting what Blizzard Executives did to this game, they're literally acting like money-grubbing goblins.
In 2002 I thought it was cool that units had the same death sound, like they were a big family. It was iconic. Yeah no reason to change the death sound...
The animation of improved ziggourats isn't looping, it resets every X seconds. I bet you don't notice it easily with normal time speed, but here in fast mode you see it so clearly !
Because if you check back in the days, actually building and units are actual painting from real life, now days most stuff are done via computer, no actual going and draw.paint it then import it into the game, very expensive method, but real good visiual. Thats why old stuff looks so nice in terms of color and visualization
Every voice over was changed with the exception if the English one. I installed the old German voices manually, because the new ones are just so lame and the old ones are so nostalgic.
@@randomdude2026 same thing for the Russian community. Even worse that the most of the iconic voice actors are long dead, so they basically disrespected their memory
@@shacuras8201 Possibly due to contracts and rather pay some cheap people to remake it than pay more to get a new contract to the old voiceovers company
I've heard they had to change it for legal reasons. They new voiceover is more accurate and closer to the original, but the old voices are much more memorable and they're imprinted in my brain, imho .
I remember the first thing I noticed was that there was one new death sound for the grunt that sounded weirdly similar to the death knight death sound, and I never got used to the sound either edit: For anyone that is interested / can be bothered, go into the editor and listen to GruntDeath3 and after that the DK death sound, for me the first second sounds like the same sound but pitched down
It was so weird that they had a perfect example of job well done - the SC Remastered - they constantly communicated with pros, had a good standing in the community and so on - and they managed to completely avoid the good practices followed in the SC remaster and create this visual chaos. The most important thing - visual clarity - being able to recognize a character immediately when seeing them, its wrong in this reforged. That bugs me so much when I'm looking at it, its unreal.
It does look like it needs a re-remaster. I'm wondering if your issue with the sounds are because they took the original files, which probably weren't recorded in the best quality to begin with, and ran some processing on them. That might explain how you hear extra sibilance on the ess sounds. The building scaling does look super weird.
Even though I do not work in anything sound related, I have some words for that Far Seer attack sound; at least to me personally, it sounds a bit like nails on a chalkboard, but dragged really fast. Ouchies.
I've also noticed that the reforged edition, regardless if it's in classic or not, layered over sound effects. Originally, sounds wouldn't layer over each other such that even in big battles ,there was some amount of cohesion as to what's going on. But now, when a big battle happens, every sound gets overlayed to a point that you can't even hear when you tab to a particular unit or get a notification. While this change does make things 'intense' when the big fights happen, I do think it also ruins a lot of cohesion for the player to understand what is currently happening elsewhere.
Actually it might actually be the same sound it was sourced from. Old soundfiles have less frequency and bit depths. This makes them smaller in size and also much faster and easier to compute so very important for performance on the old hardware back then. This however comes at the cost of cutting out the extremes in a sound (high and low frequency sounds). So high pitched sounds are filtered out. Now with the higher quality soundfiles from reforged, who are more true to the source, they may actually provide high pitched noise that was filtered out before. Ofc that is something a sound engineer has to look out for. Edit: forgot to mention I am talking about that pitched noise on the far seer's attacks
I'm watching the start of the video, thinking "yeah reforged sucks but some of these things are totally nitpicks and so hard to notice" and then at 1:15 a literal SHREK walks in from the left side of the screen LMAO
I can't believe how they fu×ked up Warcraft 3. When I was elementary school student, my parents bought Warcraft 3 and Frozen Throne for me. It was so epic and really awesome for me. And now? Blizzard massacred my memories.
Agree on all of this. With Starcraft 2 they already had different sounds when, for example, Marines died. It was already in the game and fairly easy to recognize but you can pretty hear just by the sound what type of unit died in Warcraft 3, Night Elf, Human, even a random creep. And the spacing between buildings in Reforged is just horrible. Playing certain maze maps in reforged is a headache as you can't really tell if certain buildings are wall to wall or not. Not to mention the graphics looking like something out of an Age of Wonders ORPG.
Actually, in Starcraft 2 you can *tell* what units died still. The death sounds are similar enough that you can discern whether it's a Marine or Marauder that just died, whether it's a Zergling or Roach or Hydralisk that just died, and whether it was just a Zealot or High Templar that just died. You can hear five different death sounds as Protoss and still be able to tell "three Zealots and two High Templar just died" without looking. It's only the larger mechanical units that don't have very distinct audio queues but like, they're so damn big with such a large explosion you'll see it easily.
Watching your videos for the last 2 weeks has got me so keen to play WC3 again. Are there any match making servers for the OG WC3 still? Or to PVP do you need to get Reforged at this point?
It goes back to what's practically effective vs what's realistic. in quick action or RTS games, having quick and sharp sounds is good to keep things stable, so the deeper and more realistic sounds go to slower games (in comparison to) which is nice. Also something about the visuals, this may be an interesting critique that i'm about to write, when watching Sc2, Heros of the Storm, Command and Conquer or War3 on youtube, i dont really mind watching on 480p because of my data cap. but i can't watch Reforged with anything lower than 1080-60fps otherwise i'll puke. and even then it has the wealth of critiques that others stated more than me.
TBF sound of dead 2 huntresses was almost the same, it would be clear that is THIS unit but the biggest problem is, dead sound of archers was made by same actor so it was just the same :P
Well Grubby, this video definitely opened my eyes to the failure of reforged (though I think the game should be conceptually good). Born into war2 and sc1, command speed did not matter as much as command do (war is still more command do). It is just sad to see blizzard fail a reconfiguration, all things considered (they never usually fail). They rushed it, and that is something they never did and paid the price for it. I like the early diablo realism they tried to implement. But colors, sounds, most of the sizing ( the moon well had me lol on a you tube video) gl
i think the issue with the new sounds is the equalizer used to treat the high frequencies, i think there is something wrong with EQ used on the high frequencies " you can hear that in the arrow sound or the S sounds or the farseer basic attack ", maybe because old audio production used to be "warm" meaning that there was less emphasize on the high end of the frequency spectrum than what we hear nowadays. however, i agree that the sounds are sharper, thats why they are annoying to hear.
So the ssssSSss sound that is more pronounced on the acolytes is what is referred to as sibilance. It seems like they tried to upscale the quality of the existing audio sfx and lines, but didn't necessarily do a reference check to make sure that their updates sounded good on all types of sound systems. Either that or they got someone to do it who doesn't know what they are doing.
It's such a shame to revisit but it so much reflects how the company has changed. Classic was from people who loved games, and epic stories, that made games for fellow gamers. Current Blizzard is just a few suits that look for the best way to make an extra buck. I sometimes miss the olden times when gaming was a niche and you mostly had people making games for the sake of making games and become famous for being a visionary that pushed the boundries. So many games these days feel like an elaborate shoppingcart with the least amout of effort poured in to make them something one could call a game. And even if WC3:Reforged didn't have microtransactions attached, it still felt like a quick cahsgrab.
Its probably was the meaning of it: Reforge old classic for lowest money possible and make huge bucks from sells. This is their classic approach last 15 years from World of Warcraft, but its not working for old gamers from W3.
Now i want to say , YES sound Matters ! And i remember all that great Voice ,Dabing to Czech language ! I am From Slovakia ,but our Languages are similiar and we can understand to each other. We miss it to. I remember times with my friends we had fun with that so much at school ! :D And now, these sounds completely dissapear.
The death sound thing, is something RTS devs seem to not understand. Better graphics and realistic sounds is not always good. If you Indi dualize ever single characters model and and sound in an RTS, it makes for a realistically worthless game! Units should look the same and at the same time be easily distinguishable, so is their sound and icons, and everything.
0:53 I think that has to do with the audio file compression, the "new" sounds that the game uses when you switch "Reforged Mode" on are a different file type than the original files from 2002.
I love the chat inside the video. Someone said: "If Reforge catastrophe doesn't radicalize you against capitalism, you need to sit down and have a long think about what you value in life". And another one replied:"a bad product doesn't need to incite you to have a political statement about capitalism bad take, so if it was good then what? unrelated." The point is that, because of capitalism, there are plenty of trash products or things that we don't ever use. In wc3 terms, capitalism is about High upkeep. It is about greed, my internet degenerates, which lead us into Hell you cant see. :-*

@@DrownedLamp "How would W4 fit into the WoW timeline?"
It wouldn't, nor should it even try to. WoW's timeline is an absolute clusterfuck and any RTS should've taken place in an alternate timeline written for an RTS instead of an MMO.
@@spikem5950 actually wow lore is pretty good if you stop at vanilla. Still no idea why they felt we needed to go to outland first
Grubby doing the dying sounds gave me life
over 18' of Grubby "moaning", now I can die in peace...
What I do not get is why they didn't use the HotS graphics and sounds. They look great, comparing to reforged at least...
Rant out of the way, this must be the day I've laughed the most this year so far, thank you Grubby :)
Grubby, we're free, it's over. The reforged is re-reforged
@@christophscDoes it use the original sounds/voices if you play on classic or are you forced to use the new sounds?

That Far Seer attack sounds like scratching glass
'its hard to describe. its just garbage' well grubby you did just perfectly describe it. :D
It’s nice to hear your honest breakdown of what is wrong with reforged, and just how awful it was. When it first came out you were oddly silent about it, and even seemed quite positive. I think you explained why that was so at some point, and I’m not criticising you for it. But at the time I felt like I was going crazy because it was just so abysmal. So yeah, satisfying to hear you explain everything I hated about it so eloquently.
Nice watch!
I never even thought about the importance of having consistent death sounds for units.
Great explanation
They originally added the new sounds to REGULAR wc3 tft as well. That first day when it switched over... knowing I wouldn't see that classic opening menu... with the Lich King castle... and the iron plated doors closing... its sad its all gone. LET ALONE the first game I played where everything sounded different.
The orb of corruption audio and video is so iconic. It's a shame they changed it. The orb from destroyer (like a crystal prism) is also very unique.. now it's just a generic magic ball.
I am Glad to find this Channel,
Back in the day I played a lot to wc3 then I switched to sc2 but I always missed wc3, is great to see Grubby still playing this :) I remember to watch replays from "wc3replays" webpage, an a lot of different patches for ex. I remember games where Grubby playing with orcs put the FS behind the mine with all entries blocked by units to try to survive the harass of a buffed warden complete impossible to stop, can you imaging the only thing an orc could do was just to be inside of his town for quite a long time...
would the original game still working? or I would need the Reforged? younger people watching this game nowadays: Can you tolerate the graphics? for me are great but I guess is because it is something sentimental :)
There are still people playing the original ROC? it was quite different to TFT different rules and strategies.
I just saw you imitating a huntress dying and I swear I'd buy WC3 remake with every sound voiced by you!
I now only play the game in english so I dont have to ruin my nostalgia everytime I start the game.
the facefx is also broken like if you make a custom unit clone and give the clone a different voice, the original unit has no more lip sync
It hurts EVEN MORE knowing one of those superb remasters was StarCraft 1...
same they even tried to threaten suing people for uploading replays and revolted to give peoples money back until a court order
Someone please clip Grubby making all the dying noises and make it into a remix.
ChatGPT GO!!!
"Uther being alive in the Upside Down" HAHAHA, ok that made me laugh.
Warcraft 3 could have been the comeback of the golden RTS era, but Blizzard being Blizzard :(
The death sounds are just an insult to original voice acting
We love old WC3 for all it is. Just its total complite at all aspects. Everything are perfect
i think if they improved on the technical side of connectivity and implementing reconnecting into the game, maybe some changes to how graphics are handled (resolution etc) and the game would perfect as is. But no, they had to ruin it completely
I used to watch replays of tournaments back in early two thousands and Grubby was easily one of the best, I didn't even knew what he looks like back then so when I found his youtube channel I was blown away that he's still playing W3
that's how good and well-made this game is and its disgusting what Blizzard Executives did to this game, they're literally acting like money-grubbing goblins.
Man, did they ever mess up Reforged. Embarrassing.
The craziest part is that they spent money making reforged graphics. Also we definitely need to see you interview Designer Dave
9:23 lmfao was surprised so hard here
Because if you check back in the days, actually building and units are actual painting from real life, now days most stuff are done via computer, no actual going and draw.paint it then import it into the game, very expensive method, but real good visiual.
Thats why old stuff looks so nice in terms of color and visualization
The most unforgiveable thing is that they replaced the iconic classic Russian voiceover with some lifeless trash.
They also replaced the iconic German voiceover. Why go to all the effort
@@shacuras8201
Possibly due to contracts and rather pay some cheap people to remake it than pay more to get a new contract to the old voiceovers company
I've heard they had to change it for legal reasons. They new voiceover is more accurate and closer to the original, but the old voices are much more memorable and they're imprinted in my brain, imho .
I remember the first thing I noticed was that there was one new death sound for the grunt that sounded weirdly similar to the death knight death sound, and I never got used to the sound either
edit: For anyone that is interested / can be bothered, go into the editor and listen to GruntDeath3 and after that the DK death sound, for me the first second sounds like the same sound but pitched down
11:40 Tyrande bath water :^)
The thumbnail makes Frozen Throne look like reforged and reforged as the classic 😄
Ouchies.
6:30
Grubby: That i support greatly!
Thrall: *Nods*
The Reforged Huntress death sound also has a lingering jangle of the glaive falling to the ground.
units are so hard to see in reforged, they dont pop like they are supposed to.
14:21 I was there 3000 years ago, when the strength of Blizzard failed...
I actually have some trouble telling the BladeMaster apart from the Grunts.
The OG Blademaster is unmistakable with his giant bulky katana cleaver 😆
I've also noticed that the reforged edition, regardless if it's in classic or not, layered over sound effects. Originally, sounds wouldn't layer over each other such that even in big battles ,there was some amount of cohesion as to what's going on. But now, when a big battle happens, every sound gets overlayed to a point that you can't even hear when you tab to a particular unit or get a notification. While this change does make things 'intense' when the big fights happen, I do think it also ruins a lot of cohesion for the player to understand what is currently happening elsewhere.
Thank you for imitating the death cries XD
They need to revert all the audio changes
I think grubby should’ve been the voice actor for reforged!! Those huntress death sounds were classic!!!
Grubby made the archer shooting sound pretty good lool
looking at it around 2:20 makes it like they drew inspiration from league of legends, the color pallete and all
Gods you're right, now I know why I hate it so much.
who ever thougt this was a good game design . i hope these persons got fired .
And now?
Blizzard massacred my memories.
don't let reforged massacre your memories because that gives reforged/blizzard too much credit
PVP need reforged, they shut down the old servers and game xdd
The ghouls sound like murlocs when they die 3:47

Oh god, the memes that are going to come out as a result of this video... 👌

Played it for the first time around 2007 besides LAN the story will never be the same the buildup was great
TBF sound of dead 2 huntresses was almost the same, it would be clear that is THIS unit but the biggest problem is, dead sound of archers was made by same actor so it was just the same :P
Dude you are great!
I'm so glad I have an old box with Warcraft 3 TFT. Shame I've not had a DVD drive for 10 years haha
:D And now, these sounds completely dissapear.
you were cracking up my girlfriend who was hearing this in the background
The death sound thing, is something RTS devs seem to not understand.
Better graphics and realistic sounds is not always good.
If you Indi dualize ever single characters model and and sound in an RTS, it makes for a realistically worthless game! Units should look the same and at the same time be easily distinguishable, so is their sound and icons, and everything.
One cannot unhear the bow sound LOL.
Absolutely. I hate the fact that they changed the sounds even for me who didnt buy reforged.
