Building houses out of planks give you 4x the amount of blocks to place. 1 oak wood block makes 4 oak planks. That why people want you to build with it.

I'm 3 years late to the party, but there's something so pleasant about watching someone experience minecraft for the first time, especially if that someone is as entertaining as Jev 👀
Some tips:
Hold shift to pick/craft all the items at once
Use torches
Mobs dont spawn next to light
Update to 1.14
Up your brightness to see in the dark

-Shovel is to mine gravel, sand, and dirt
- if you light your house with torches mobs won't spawn
try using a shaders because your pc will definitely be able to run them 😂

The thing that I love about watching new MineCraft players play is the patience and dedication that most of them have. Like when Jev settles down on the sand island, he took the time to level it. Lord knows if I were playing i woulda just built a lopsided ass house after playing for 8 years.
Jason you need to time your hits on mobs in order to do actual damage to them. The sword meter where your crosshair is tells you when its recharged.

You use planks instead of logs because for every 1 log, you get 4 planks. It saves you time and effort jev. Either way you do you, but just a tip. Keep up the great work

Tip: the compass is helpful only when u have a bed. The bed is your spawn point after u have slept in it. The compass only points toward your spawn point.
