- In this episode I share a few updates regarding the caravan chassis upgrade while I continue to chip away at the renovation.
For those interested here is the long list of repairs required to increase the ATM to 2.5T and see me travel safe on the road.
1. Repair crack on RH outrigger
2. Repair rusted Z-sections (LH & RH side areas)
3. Replace safety chain to 2x 13mm marked AS4177-35
4. Replace axle/suspension/brakes
(replace drop axles with straight axles - approx 50mm lift)
(replace wheels & tyres, 14" alloy or to client's spec)
5. Fit 10" electric brakes all round (+30kg)
6. Replace drawbar - 100x50x3 + 50x50x3 tensioner, 2200 long
7. Fit reflectors 2x front (white), 4x sides (amber) & 2x rear (red)
8. Replace coupling to DO35
9. Fit break-away unit
10. Reinforce chassis - add 50x50x3 SHS to underside of main
chassis rails and front cross member (+40kg)
11. Supply & fit new stabiliser legs all round
12. Supply & fit water tank central to, or forward of axles
13. Supply & fit grey water tank rear of axles
14. Mount drawbar box (gas & BBQ)
15. Mount spare wheel (under or on top of drawbar)

If you want to tow more safely without the stress, get a sway controller and electric brakes with a brake controller, it will save your life if the caravan goes into a sway, I am doing up a 15 foot Viscount and done heaps of research for towing safety. You may pay a few $ up front but have peace of mind towing.

wow, that's a lot of repairs, how's your bank balance!! personally, I would live in a Mobile Home. Creating roots for yourself is important especially as you get older!! he says I'm not the most sociable person as I am an introvert.
That is a lot of work to be done, wouldn’t it be cheaper to purchase a more modern van?
We will see once we get the quotes back. So far I’ve received one for $8000. Which would still be cheaper then buying another van. Also, I’ve poured my heart and soul into the renovation on this caravan and it’s designed to suit me. I’m not a fan of the design of newer vans plus here in Australia a new caravan is nearly $100k or more!! So I still think this would be cheaper :)
