It's sad that this is the second video I've watched in the past two days, which is a solo travelling woman talking about feeling unsafe in free camps. I think too, what you are possibly hinting at is the current housing crisis, forcing so many people into mobile life (as in, not their choice) alters the culture of the free camps - it's not just happy travellers, so to speak, but a range of people, and some do not feel the safest to be around. The issue of men approaching solo women and making them feel uncomfortable or unsafe though, that's a bigger problem that I find so disappointing. Stay safe. Thanks for the insight into your experience.

its an interesting and very common perspective you have. from my view as a non homeless traveller and in the older age male catergory, i experience the same safety concerns you mention but not from older men, but younger ones. ive often moved camps due to gut feeling. im non confrontational and find it easier to camp by myself. i think its a sad indictment on our society that this has become a concern for not only single women, but men and families who choose to travel short or long term. i did the around australia trip for a few years in the 80s and this feeling of threat just didnt exist back then. ive almost lost my desire to travel due to these concerns and yet now retired, have all the time in the world to enjoy this lifestyle. all i can say is trust your instinct and if i ever see you camped somewhere.... i wont say hello :) lol ps. ive enjoyed your videos, well made . best regards, the old bloke with his dog.

There has been over 40,000 people move from Vic and NSW into Qld in the past couple of years. It has been a bug part of the push for our housing crisis. Single women live with a baseline of safety considerations that men don't ever even blink at from their privileged position. No judgement, just fact. These older men, if their intentions were honourable would be respectful and offering help and giving you their number and leaving you alone, not asking 101 questions.
I love that your first tip was to trust you intuition. It will always, always serve you.
    Stay safe beautiful woman xox

Good advice Amie, about listening to your gut as a woman. Trying to teach that to my daughters. The housing crisis is cruel especially to those already vulnerable. Take care, thanks for another great watch.

By reading the comments that other travellers have added for campsites on Wikicamps you can often find out if there are "permanents" staying at the site and if they have behaved inapropriate towards previous campers.

My experience has been (for safety) to pay for camps (even if just at Showgrounds) in QLD, NSW, NT. I feel the whole vibes changes in VIC & SA & WA and free camps feel safer. Always trust intuition despite how good the wiki reviews are

Great video! as a solo female traveller Im always very aware of my surroundings and the people around me. I’ve only ever had a few dodgy places/ people that have made me feel uncomfortable and Ive moved on from.

Being a single female, I would never travel alone. Being in LE for 17! Years, I have heard and experienced too many people and jobs

I love your content, full of good info, ideas and inspiration 😊. I'm a cycle camper, doing SE Qld to Nth NSW rail trails, Airbnb and wild camp. Looking at Tweed Rail trail, coast camps. Life is good: be well, happy and safe❤

Great perspective. So true. Not everyone chooses to live remotely.

Older male here, 100% inappropriate, that last bit creeped me out I am afraid. I should have said introverted older male here. The lines used to me indicate a little lead in to get the conversation going, of course I could be wrong. Occasionally, very occasionally people approach me as I make sure I look unapproachable, and they will start with usually something to do with the car, and then proceed to tell me everything they think is wrong with it, knowledge airing exercise. I have a dual edged approach, first I am polite but unengaging, giving the impression I don't want to talk, then I just get rude if they don't get the hint. Different I know, I am male. I also generally let my wife handle the talking, she is much better at it than I ever will be or ever want to be. To be honest though, we have had very few people approach us, maybe due to my horror movie looks, maybe 5 times in 6 years but we do like to get as remote as we can, but even in Tasmania last year, only once and it was pretty harmless, folks noticed our number plate and wondered where in Qld we were from, we were outside getting ready to leave and they were walking past and didn't stop. I guess for me the key is awareness of all things going on around you.

It’s a shame that some people don’t consider the impact they may have on others, intended or not. It doesn’t take a huge intellect or a small degree of empathy to realise that approaching a single young female in a remote area is going to cause her to become unsettled. Turning up at the door with a 6-pack of beer is just presumptuous in the extreme. It irks me that buffoons like that give the older gentlemen, like myself who would not dream of doing such a thing, a bad rep.

Exactly. If someone looks disinterested and giving one word answers it’s time to stop asking questions and leave

The sad part is that the area you're in in South East Queensland could almost be considered part of the greater Brisbane area. You weren't so close to a major city down south and if you go further west in Queensland you will find a different atmosphere

Sad. Because the vast majority of us older men have no nefarious intent and do respect women. And we've come from a generation that generally help and care and include others when they want it, not harm them. I do understand your circumstances, however. I have a wife and 2 daughters (and 2 sons) of my own and I want them to be and feel safe.

As someone who grew up in the 60's and 70's travelling and going places in a caravan, I think you might be over thinking the danger, that was part of van culture, everyone stopped by for a yarn, vast majority of older males are just interested in the van or what another traveller is doing, most wives don't care or just don't like to approach. I travel solo on a motorbike (60 yr old male) and people constantly come up to talk to me, anyone from young women such as yourself to older men, I love it because I was widowed a few years ago and it's just nice to have someone to talk to. Sadly I don't ever approach anyone first seeing as your generation seems to just assume all middle age white men are predators, when we are mostly just good people trying to be friendly. I wish you could have experienced the 60's and 70's to see how different it was then. It's sad we've ended up like this. You're right to be cautious traveling alone but please give us the benefit of the doubt.

you have lived a safe life then. sexual crime is a part of every day life unfortunately, involving strangers and known people as well.

@@carrier411 It is but what I'm saying is the vast majority of these interactions are just innocent people trying to be friendly or curious. Sadly the media would have you believe otherwise and that everyone is out to get you.
