Notice the internal rhyming - " . . . lemon muRANG, and outside you HANG your clothes". Just a little throwaway that most listeners would never notice, but the man was indeed a lyrical genius. And an underrated singer too!
They left off about a minute's worth on this song..... "When you were just a little baby, Well your skin fit fine, And it still is gonna fit you,When you're 6 foot 9,So whether you're fat, tall, big, small, chubby or THINNNNNNNNN....Ain't ya glad ya got SKINNNNNNNNN?" Not too bad of a memory!
he is BRILLIANT - check out "Good Advice"! . . .This version doesn't have the schmaltzy classic ending ~ "Why when you were just a baby, Oh, you're skin fit fine, and it still is gonna fit you, when you're 6-foot-nine - so whether you're fat, tall, big, small, chubby or thin - AIN'T YA GLAD YA GOT SKIIIIN!!"
The first verse was the one I really liked.."You've gotta have skin ....when you' got it on the outside, It helps keep your insides in" catchy tune too, pinched from Alan Jay Lerner
once hear funny song, "I Went to Your Wedding." Man sing, and next line, "Although it was dreading..." then much laugh. Very funny song. Cannot find on YT.
Not to mention, what is love all about? Skin. Ashley Judd as Ruby in "Ruby in Paradise" (1993) had a line where she said something like this. "Everyone says it's what's inside that counts but skin is what counts." Sherman did his version of self-effacing humor, it was his comic shtick, but he was really a savage social critic. Just read his books. He knew was what he was getting at.
yes jazmaan, I also noticed another example of internal rhyming, "You'd be dressed in your intestines". Except Allan sang, "wrapped" (not dressed) before he realized his lips had slipped.

Allan is very right, can you imagine how much better 'Total Eclipse of the Oesophagus' would have sounded?
Man was a genius
Ya gatta have HEART! Oh, sorry... SKIN!!
I think Jergens or some skin lotion is now using this version of the song for their commercials, with some alterations to the lyrics of course. :P
My favorite song from him is when he sang about eggs.

The stuff he says at the beginning reminds me of Tom Lehrer's "Dope Peddler" song.
Classic Sherman..
I'd KILL to see the video to "Harvey and Sheila"....lol
