- The race you are about to see appear as originally broadcast and may contain imagery that is offensive and doesn't align with NASCAR's values. NASCAR has since permanently banned the display of the confederate flag at all events.
21:12 The very instant that the era of 210 MPH ended.
If that one cross wire in the fencing hadn't had kept Bobby's car from flying into the stands I don't think NASCAR would even exist anymore.

To be honest with everyone Bobby Allison said Harold Kinder the Flagman never missed a beat waving the Caution Flag.
It's amazing how you can hear all the little impacts happening
"Had Allison spun at just a slightly different angle, we could have witnessed a tragedy on the scale of the 1955 LeMans Disaster...The line between driver and spectator had ben severed, and it could have ended NASCAR entirely. Fortunately, NASCAR would make good use of their second chance as the era of speed came to a permanent end."
People can talk about the F1 turbo era but nothing can match this. 41 pushrod V8s running wide open at 210mph. The sound at the end of lap one is godly
The sound of turbo was good but the atmo's era was better with the V10 & V12
My late grandfather was sitting near where Allison hit the fence. Said it was the scariest racing incident he witnessed until a member of Bill Elliott's pit crew got ran over and k*lled by Ricky Rudd at Atlanta in 1990
😳
The race that changed nascar forever

@@jefferyrobertson7520 I don't really like the front end of the delta
The Restrictor plates went on the Cars in July
@@joshuadodginsatgoogle4116They ran smaller carburetors in for the Firecracker 400 and Talladega 500. The plates didn't get introduced (well reintroduced) until the 1988 Daytona 500
I Like Buick Regal And Chevrolet Lumina From The Early 90s NASCAR Winston Cup Series
Looking back it's INSANE that these guys were going 200 MPH plus with no neck restraints, plain seatbelts, open face helmets.
They had harnesses, but the open face helmets and no neck restraints were insane.
They also had no power steering in most of the cars and were running on bias-ply tires. Back when you had to be a man to run in Winston Cup.
@@ethanweeter2732 Their harnesses/seat belts were "modern" and seat technology was rapidly improving in the mid to late 80s (custom seats started to become a thing). The roll cages and general build quality by then was also very good, especially among the top teams. These cars were a lot safer than they look in hindsight....
This race is 1 of my favorites all time. The amazing comment that astounds me is when Bob Jenkins said on lap 2 " the pace is 209.82 mph" , I loved Larry's comment nobody wanted to go 209 mph, and yet qualifying was 212- 210 ( top 20) and that was single car qualifying.
the integrity of that catch fencing saved many lives...
Love these vintage races!!!!!!!! 🏁🏁
In hindsight this is terrifying, but at the time as a 16-year-old race fan watching on TV, I was just wondering when the darn fence could be fixed so the race would resume.
I do remember feeling mortified watching a young Kyle Larson go into the fence at Daytona in an Xfinity race several years ago. Old age does that to you.
Those Thunder Chickens were hell..Davey Allison was one helluva cool customer

Use slow mo
The harmonic balancer came off the front of the engine.
You can see the front of the car actually lift as the part leaves the engine.
It then flies back and explodes the tire.
The race that changed everything. Still miss Davey to this day.
"It's rare that the fences work and actually catch the cars..."
And ever since, they have worked as intended...well...for the most part.
Geoff Bodine, a hard wreck, hard truck wreck- man he survived.
NASCAR was never the same after this race. Safety tech just wasn’t advanced enough to securely protect the drivers and more importantly the fans at these kinds of speeds. It was unfortunate that engine power had to be restricted after this, but it was necessary.
What a great young man great race car driver and the true definition of checkers or wreckers so sad what happened to him he will always be missed man what this sport could have been R.I.P Davey
When racing was actually racing with no gimmicks. Bring what you brung and let the best car and driver win.
thats me lookin thru the destroyed fence on the right. bobby bout got me. i got smacked with a a big chunk of orange bondo off darrells car. dident no he got damage from it till i got home. bobs harmonic balancer hit his rollbar rite above his head knockin out the windshield. few more inches an he wouldent have had a head.
What would NASCAR give to have 135,000 people in stands today.

can you post the 1986 talladega 500? that race was a classic!
And we stuck a bandaid on and built the sport!!
210 in 1987, they barely cracked 190 with the pack, what a shame.
The day that nascar officials shit their pants.
The new cars should adopt sets ups like what they had here. The racing would be awesome
Bobby Allison turned a 220 mph lap in practice before this race
A kids meal is all I need, a snack.
That was hard racin back then, look at them cars & them drivers. Chases daddy leadin them to green...

20:50 Bobby Allison Crash + Red Flag
It took GM so long to figure out how to make a round corner, evan Dale Sr. said the Monte Carlo was a dinosaur.
When you look at the Ford Taurus being as revolutionary as it was in 1986 when it was launched, GM could absolutely never. It took them YEARS to come up with something that actually looked aerodynamic
