The cutscene of Rufus looking out his office window, knowing his death was imminent has always stuck with me. Just his reaction, eerily calm and arms at his side, it feels like he understood that he had played a high-risk game and lost; accepting his fate quite graciously. A true testament to his character: cold, calculative, and tenacious until the very end. Though his screen-time was argumentatively minimal, Rufus will go down as one of my all-time favorite villains of any series.
There's something almost perverse about using the very thing the WEAPONS were trying to safeguard - Mako - in sudden, obscene quantities to kill one of them.
I always loved how Rufus stared at death right in the eye at 4:04. He was my favorite villain. I know Advent Children had him come back, but for me, he truly died in FF7.
He was only in Advent Children for fanservice. He was a notable villain they wanted in the story who already died so they just had him turn up alive again within the movie.
And in Dirge of Cerberus. You see him on the stretcher briefly in the opening cutscene. When I saw him I was like "How tf did he survive?!" "On the Way to a Smile" has his story. He was only brought back and said he survived due to an escape hatch his father put in the executive office because of Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus. Rufus is one of my favorites too! I honestly never saw him as a true villian though.
Shinra's technology really is amazing. I always loved how surprisingly powerful the Sister-Ray turned out to be, even back when it was still at Junon. This scene once again reminds me of Evangelion, more specifically the Positron Canon scene.
Also, when Sapphire Weapon first attacked Junon, watching everyone there firing every weapon they got to delay it while the cannon's reloading reminds me of Evangelion whenever Tokyo-3 goes into full alert and firing all kinds of artillery to intercept the Angel.
I know this comment is old but this scene reminds me of the short OVA Mobile Gundam Winged Zero where Heero gets the railgun charged to blast through their reinforced presidential compound
I love how this isn't like the traditional villain death where the bad guy is distraught or yelling in disappointment over their defeat, rather Rufus just accepts it, as he knew he was gonna get what's coming to him. I wanna write a villain like this, one who's so badass that not even their defeat can truly break them.
theres an obvious reason this is the best cutscene of all time. the sheer power of essentially the government using all of their might to destroy the weapon, then this creature firing back. seeing the president know he is fucked and then the whole company being destroyed is incredible
No way they can top this scene in the remake. It's pulled off so effortlessly and subtly here. The music, the staging, the camera angles, everything is perfect. Final Fantasy has become too bombastic for scenes like this.
This scenes is supposed to be bombastic, is a giant cannon the size of a city powered by 6 nuclear reactors firing against a giant kaiju that is located at the other side of the planet, the only reason why it's not more bombastic is because of the limitations of the time It's going to be a sight to behold in the remake

It has always bugged me how both Sapphire and Diamond could have easily survived if they attack from anywhere left or right of the cannon. Especially Diamond, with the gun fixed in a permanent position it could have attacked Midgar from literally any where and win. For Sapphire, it can just attack anywhere lower than the barrel and destroy the entire city.

Damon242 While thats true, sephiroth was giving off by far the greater amount of mako energy where he was at. The weapons was attracted to midgard, but the reason weapons was attacking from that angle was so that they couldn't blast sephiroth who the planet likely knew would absorb all of the energy as he is essentially genova with a different goal at that point the original thing the weapons where made to stop.

This was like the best scene in the whole game besides the end. If only Diamond Weapon wasn't standing right in front of it, he would of destroyed MIdgar, which would make for an interesting plot twist.
You know, I'm rewatching this for my third or so time, and I noticed something. It was always Shinra's intention to destroy Sephiroth's barrier. That's why they moved the cannon to Midgar, to harness the power of the 7 active reactors. Diamond Weapon just happened to be in the way at the wrong time because the Weapons are mindless and have the strategic capabilities of a tin of Spinach. This is the scene im looking forward to the most. It also reminds me of that one LOTR3 scene where the orc commander stares at the huge rock flying towards him during a battle/siege. Though he does step back at the last second unlike our stylish bad boy Rufus here.
This cutscene insinuates that Sephiroth somehow controlled the WEAPONS after they reawoken. The woke up in response to Meteor. But somepoint after that, they were doing Sephiroth's bidding. Only reason why one would try to tank the Sister Ray shot. And another seemingly hunting down Cloud and his crew. The WEAPONS seem to ignore Sephiroth for anything else.
WEAPON wasn’t trying to tank the shot. It came from the crater, it was heading towards Midgar from there. It was incredibly convenient for Shinra. WEAPON was acting on its own accord to protect the planet from threats. Since Sephiroth was shielded, WEAPON went after the next biggest threat.
The attempts to justify the Weapons' stupidity are pretty funny, especially when Ruby and Emerald make no attempt to go after Sephiroth after the barrier is downed and instead just sit around like giant lemons. And yes I am aware that they were both added as extra bosses in the international release of FFVII, but they are nonetheless canon and established as being about as useful to the protection of the planet as a can of fluorescent orange paint.
if you played the game.. (or watched the video at least) the beam was directed at the northern crater, weapon moving would have had no effect on its course as it wasn't the target, it was caught in the crossfire
He didn’t duck. He just covered himself. He woke up on the floor and slid under his desk and hit the emergency escape. He was in horrendous condition, and only stayed conscious purely out of anger. When he got to the safe room he found pain pills to numb himself while he waited for help to arrive. He was hospitalized for a bit and bandaged for a while.
Salty people hating that Rufus survives in the comments. It’s hard to see at first but you can clearly see Rufus just disappear near his desk before the office explodes. I heard that there was an escape hatch near the desk for such emergencies, made by his father for his son. Apparently, also from what I heard, old Papa Shinra thought it was for losers and filled the escape room with loser signs to mock his son if he ever used it.
That was written over a decade after the original game, and the problem is that at a writing level it completely ruins what is a powerful character moment for the sake of fanservice. Rufus dissapearing isn't really foreshadowing, just clunky 1997 CGI(this is far from the game's only animation goof)
@Saimeren ?? I didn't lol it was saying the same thing I believe just edited a grammatical error and reposted it. Anyway I don't think the weapons would know that the shield is down unless they happened upon it or went back to check, and they seemed more like monsters killing anything in sight really. You do have a point though i forgot that it was right when cloud gave seph the black materia that they awakened.
which would be the same as firing blood at human beings with a few 100 miles/km an hour. orrrrrr watercanons designed to actually put a hole in one's body. sounds like a pretty eco-friendly-weapon to me! :P
@Jupshaw00 I love how you delete your post right after you sent it juust in case you were wrong and didn't want other people to see it. Shinra has been using maco energy long before Sephiroth became a problem. If the weapons were after all people they would have shown up a long time ago, not just when Sephiroth decided to destroy the planet.
Who Would Win The most technologically advanced city in the world with a giant laser beam powered by the entire city's energy OR One Dude with a Big Sword, One Cursing Pilot, One Hot Boxing Chick
So, what I don't understand is this.. I know that the weapons emerged so they could defend the planet from the new threat (sephiroth) but they couldn't sense Sephiroth due to his shield being up, thus they went on a rampage attacking the next biggest source that was a threat to the planet, being shinera in Junon, and Midgar. So when the shield comes down, Sapphire, and Diamond are dead, but why don't Ultimate, Ruby, and Emerald then head to the crator and deal with Sephiroth?
At least from a development perspective, Ruby and Emerald supposedly weren't in the Japanese version, only later included in the US version. As far as Ultimate? Not sure why.
Part of what makes the AC retcon so garbage is that it threw away how Shinra too was dead. All of the leadership besides Reeve (who stood with Cloud and the others) and Palmer (a do-nothing) was gone. Leaving just enforcers.

4:04, it was this moment Rufus knew, he fucked up !!
Kingsglaive brought me here. :)
Out of all the weapons to date Diamond was the coolest
Rufus felt guilty for what he had done. And in Advent Children (for me at least) proved it by siding with Avalanche.
Sephiroth only puts his barrier. That makes WEAPON attack humans instead because the barrier makes him undetectable.
Special beam canon, FIRE!
if you played the game.. (or watched the video at least) the beam was directed at the northern crater, weapon moving would have had no effect on its course as it wasn't the target, it was caught in the crossfire
Could you imagine how scared people must have been after Shinra took all the Mako energy from their homes?
It was that or they would’ve died
Mako Reactor No.1 still working :|
Rufus ducked, he's fine.
If you read his story, it reveals he went under his desk and there's a secret chute in the building. That's how he escaped.
its fucking stupid, he died
It's not death, watch advent children, he was burned in a wheelchair
And how did he run fast enough to dodge the blast with the explosion?
He didn’t duck. He just covered himself. He woke up on the floor and slid under his desk and hit the emergency escape. He was in horrendous condition, and only stayed conscious purely out of anger. When he got to the safe room he found pain pills to numb himself while he waited for help to arrive. He was hospitalized for a bit and bandaged for a while.
a capacitor or few per plasma's burst
3:45 Looks like breakfast... has been served.
excitement (thrill or joy for glee) socials unless too serious about sadness and envy
Rufus should have been in a bunker not in his dad window office
@Saimeren ?? I didn't lol it was saying the same thing I believe just edited a grammatical error and reposted it.
Anyway I don't think the weapons would know that the shield is down unless they happened upon it or went back to check, and they seemed more like monsters killing anything in sight really. You do have a point though i forgot that it was right when cloud gave seph the black materia that they awakened.
The Weapons are just allergic to dodging, apparently.
Ruby and Emerald were extras for the US version I think.
Yeah, I'm thinking kino's back on the menu boys.
which would be the same as firing blood at human beings with a few 100 miles/km an hour. orrrrrr watercanons designed to actually put a hole in one's body. sounds like a pretty eco-friendly-weapon to me! :P
Rufus must have felt like a real doofus.
Actually Rufus doesn’t die because his in Advent Children
Those Weapons are Made in Machines by Ancient civilizations I guess...
Whats the song frrom 0:58?
Mako Cannon the Destruction of Shinra(if you haven't found it already)
Who Would Win
The most technologically advanced city in the world with a giant laser beam powered by the entire city's energy
OR
One Dude with a Big Sword, One Cursing Pilot, One Hot Boxing Chick
Red Ash's plot lifted here
Awesome on my page i have the one were weapon first attack and is shot
Not if the ammo is the life-force of the entire world *coughcough-mako-cough*
Why does the music sound like it's a loop
So we're not getting this scene in the remake, since Sephiroth destroys the Mako cannon. GG Square.
Did they seriously wait for weapon to walk in front of the cannon before they fired at the crater?
HorusHeresy1982 No. it just so happened to be caught in the crossfire. Plus, that cannon takes a LONG time to charge.
Poor Midgar...
RIP Never forget. :(
(ssh, Advent Children isn't canon!)
+Christoffer Hødal yes it is (are you being sarcastic?)
rufus died
Rufus died. AC is just bad fanfic.
Adven children is an emo shit
Part of what makes the AC retcon so garbage is that it threw away how Shinra too was dead. All of the leadership besides Reeve (who stood with Cloud and the others) and Palmer (a do-nothing) was gone. Leaving just enforcers.
dude this dosent help!if weapon moves, the beam moves to then!
Diamond wespon looks like kaola
Send them. Dont send them.
I want one for home defense
Edit: a sister ray
holy shit velvet underground?
Evangelion 100% this scene! Can't wait fot the third game of the Remake trilogy of FFVII.
Is this cannon shot cannon or not? Mako your own minds up #ibuilttherufuschute
Feel bad for barret, the reactors are fully repaired
Rufus went down a G
When I played FF7 I've never ever seen this because I always attacked it before it reached Midgar.
Then u used a gameshark
This cutscene happens regardless.
@@ryno4ever433 I must have remembered wrong then, I just totally can't remember this cinematic like ever :I
Let's go!
Rufus is really badass
ps4 hd remake y'all
THIS, ON FINAL FANTASY REMAKE. PREPARE YOUR POOPERS BOIS.
2:17 How the hell are the windows still there when it was JUST shown that all the windows had shattered?!
Sister ray wasn't on a turret. Weapon could have stood literally anywhere else around midgar and would have been fine.
Rufus it's not death...Watch advent children
Retcon.
PS4 Yes I said it
+Team Final Fantasy 7 I can't wait to see this in HD!
To be or not to be....
Rufus not dead
In Final Fantasy VII he died.
Hey, it worked.
too late. (stereotypical sayings depletion.)

I like big butts and I can not lie... XD
I miss FFVII T^T
