God I remember grinding Omega Weapon. I had a rule for myself, that I wasn't allowed to look up online strategies for the mega-bosses (including Ruby and Emerald from FF7) until I'd defeated them myself. (Side note, I preferred my methods for Emerald and Ruby than the online ones, because they give you 50,000AP, and I wanted that for doing some significant materia levelling up) When I realised that he always does the same attacks in the same order... it became... possible.
These animations will never get old. Theyre burned into my memory FF8 was the first one I ever saw/played. Was a liiittle kid and Id watch my dad play. Never really quite got the story then, but man were the visuals striking. We'd work on it slowly but surely over time, and I started to understand it more and more. Then we got FF9 too, and that quickly became my favorite in whole series. Also remember my mom used to haaate the Diabolos animation. We'd tease her by telling her to look at the screen when we cast him

Now i understand, it descends to Earth, warp the location of space-time that the enemy is on and centres it above itself before blasting the enemy into the blackhole at the centre of a galaxy. What an overkill, then again, Sephiroth did something more ludicrous i guess
Technically Eden does more, because Seph blows up the Sun and eradicates the Solar system, Eden wipes out at least half the galaxy there when that black hole expands and blows up
For sure! He gets overlooked because he is the first GF you get, but his animation is really cool. I love how he is shot from the cool looking sky through a lightning bolt, then pops out spinning out of the ground looking majestic AF. He doesn't look as scary as he could, but his attack is also pretty cool. The only one who tops him for looking majestic is Bahumut.
The dev team were smart to outsmart the system limitations for the summons, since most or all the summons requires more memory than the specs. The game loads data slowly and shortly before the cutscene changes, and each cutscene has different data. The FF9 summons are more smarter in terms of data management, since they're more dramatical and the data constantly changes with each cutscene, they're loaded slowly and replacing the unused ones while the cutscene run I knew this by seeing the VRAM using pSXfin emulator
My first FF and will always be my favorite. Still remember how mercerizing the special effects were when this first came out. There was nothing like it in the market. Square was on another level back then.
9:45 Cool! Bahamut vs Tiamat! I always prefer Tiamat's color scheme more than Bahamut. FFVIII GF like Shiva, Ifrit, Diablos and Bahamut are always my favorite summon beast designs in whole FF series.

Wow oh wow never seen Eden before. Damn that’s an op summon. Sending the boss to a galaxy and exploding it then falling back to earth. Stronger than super nova.
It's excruciating to get but worth it. It can actually hit for over 70,000 at full strength, if the enemy has been hit with a Meltdown first and Boost is taken all the way up.
I like how you used some of the more odd and rarer locations to do the summons in. That hockey rink really only comes up once or twice. Also GLORY to Phoenix. That colorful bird saved my happy ass 3 times in the Weapon fight
I remember being in school, on the library computers, at a time when the internet was still in its infancy... I downloaded short videos of some of the summons in anticipation for this game.
Always bothered me that Cactuar and Tonberry summons didn’t retain their boss fight designs of Jumbo Cactuar with his mustache and Tonberry King with the crown.
Cactaur still had the most detailed attack in terms of animation wise. All those needs coming looked the most...not sure of the word, just detailed and well animated.
*Maybe it's just YT. Played the FFVIII steam (not remaster) at 60fps and, while smooth, not ridiculous looking like this. Same with some Tekken 7 vids here, which all versions of the game (ps,xb,pc) are capped at 60fps, in YT, some vids look slippery smooth.*

I guess Odins entrance was always super cinematic, but quetzalcoatl (no clue if my spelling is correct there) had this mix of elegance with the force of thunder? I think i have to stick with Ifrit though. Fire, brute force and this stoic move acending on a Ball of molten rock... plus we all actually subjugated him as our first G.F. Definively my number 1.
Curative effects are the most effective attacks against undead enemies, with Holy elemental being the second best and Fire elemental being the third best. Using Ice elemental against Abadon? Consider me R1'ed.
I've beat the Omega Weapon, but I'd never have figured I could get Eden into the fight somewhere. I just gave all my characters the Hero Drinks I got from cashing Laguna's card for about forty minutes, while keeping Squall on his limit using Lionheart.
It would be really cool if VIIR could incorporate some of these summons into the next games. Also some of the crazy summons from VI could be brought over too
@@rainman3495 ff7 remake has none of the summons from 8 that didn't appear in the original ff7. I'd say they meant that they wish summons like diablos could appear in the 7 remake games.
@@BerryNiceToMeetYou We're definitely getting them sooner in FF7R though. FF7 original you got your first summon at the chocobo farm, long after Midgar, and you didn't get Leviathan until Wutai. So I wouldn't be surprised if they incorporate a few more in the upcoming games that weren't in the original (but still part of the greater FF franchise) just to keep things fresh. Here's hoping Diablos is one of those.

I love how the first time you summon Gilgamesh against Seifer, it's heavily implied that he is the same Gilgamesh from Final Fantasy 5 since this was the first time he came back in another entry.
Seifer is the only character that doesn't used GF; that's why explained he remembered his childhood days with his former childhood friends; (Squal and the rest). He doesn't affected by the side effects of using Guardian Force. Yes, its side effects are memory loss
FF VIII is the first FF that I played and finished. Hence, it gave me a lot of memories and considered it as the best. I replayed it several times already including the remastered version on my switch. 😆
I bought this game on day one and lost my job over it a week later because I was fighting a boss battle and had missed using the save point earlier lol. Anyway, I think my favorite GFs were Brothers, Diablos and Doomtrain. The later ones are cool but I hardly saw them because conventional attacks do much more damage later in the game.
I bought Brave Fencer Musashi just so I could play the FF8 demo. I was so hyped for this game, always hoping the new PSM had news every month. So good!
Showing a behemoth for the Tonberry summon was a good visual choice, as the anime sweat-drop was actually in the right place, though I dunno if that was the intention (side note: Final Fantasy VIII always felt the most anime-like to me.) Bahamut's opponent was perfectly chosen too. :)
When I watch some of these I completely understand why I loved ff in my younger days... but some of these, make me wonder how I could have put up with it. And that's exactly how I feel about ff today. I'm almost done with it completely since they haven't put out a really good one since 12 (in my jaded opinion) but... I'm still holding out some hope for 16.
I can't even play any past 12, since I have no reason to upgrade from a PS2. Not fond of PC gaming, but also liked the format better when you would walk around and have random encounters, not the monsters all around and just ready to attack. One reason I can't get completely into Legends: Arceus (Pokémon). Bad reflexes + being able to have avatar KOed by random wild Pokémon just doesn't work for me.
Sound effects for Eden are still wrong over the original, the moment the clock stops time it rang a large bell sound. And the moment when you see them in the beam and the camera pans away it's like a laser type noise which made it awesome to listen too Why does Rionas hair go bald as she vanishes
FF8 teaches me 2 important lessons: save frequently and the importance of status defence. I lost 4 hours of grinding progress due to some bullshit plant.
It was strange to me at the time how they chose to use synth sounds for the PS1-era games instead of digitized samples, but in hindsight, I love them. They sound so powerful and unique compared to the stock sounds I've gotten used to hearing.
This game is such a happy part of my childhood ❤. Diablo was always my favorite summon.
Diabolos will always be my favourite too.
He kinda gives that Frieza death ball fanservice vibe in a way. He has an awesome summon/attack animation.

Some content is actually just in the remastered version. But the phoenix for example could be summoned with the phoenixwing item...

It was strange to me at the time how they chose to use synth sounds for the PS1-era games instead of digitized samples, but in hindsight, I love them. They sound so powerful and unique compared to the stock sounds I've gotten used to hearing.
