Sure thing! I am also consider using clean sand. It is EXTREMELY inexpensive, natural and won't go mushy if it gets damp. The duct tape should prevent most moisture but I the case it does break and get wet, it can always be dried out in a pan and reused. Lowes is selling plays and for children's sand boxes, 50lbs for $3.67. A lot cheaper than rice. Much more reusable. It's even washable if you have a decent method for drying it out. :) At least I'm going to give it a good try!

Iv watched several videos and no one has suggested putting a cover over this and using this as the weighted filler. For a simple no sew full affect fleece blankets would work and I mean the thin ones. Oh also! Means that the blanket would be washable and this being used as the weighted insol would be surface washable and safe if done properly. 😍 I can’t wait

Did you weigh the blanket after duct taping it? It looks like the tape itself can add a significant amount of weight to the rice.

It looks very hot. Plastic and duct tape doesn’t sound safe for a toddler either. It is a good idea to see if it works for you child or self, but then I would make or buy one that is not so hot.

I thought it might be good to just tape the bags with 1 strip of tape over each row horizontally and vertically so they cross but dont overlap? I think its good if there is some air flow around the bags? Not sure if it would work or just get in a big mess?

  • @shannon9247

If you are worried this isn't safe for your child you can always make this but it the form of a weighted lap blanket so it won't go over there face but they can still get the benefit of the blanket. I realize this won't work for some children as they have different needs but just an idea for those that could use it this way :)

I have an idea if you have an iron there are some heming tape you can use to make a cover for it. Also check around and see if there are other options for cheaper fill material. Like cracked corn or bird feed I can get 40 lbs for 6$ which is good if you're making multiple blankets or bigger ones for adults

Oh! I already thought of that. :) I am going to make little duct tape loops along the edges and ever few knots I make on the fleece towels I will tie one knot on the inside instead of the outside to the duct tape loops. Shouldn't be too hard. Duct tape likes to stick to itself. :)

Will this weigh you down? Yes. Will this lessen your anxiety and give you a great night's sleep? No. Buy a proper weighted blanket because it's more than just the weight. It's the proper material that will give you the proper temperature for sleep. Rice and duct tape gives you a combination that will heat you up without ventilation.
Buy yourself a good weighted blanket. It is expensive. But you spend 1/3 of your life sleeping. You are worth it!

For a weighted blanket I personally would not do a no-sew blanket you're taking a big risk with this because weighted blankets cannot be machine washed because of the weight of the blanket you need to buy a special cover to put over the weighted blanket especially if you're giving it to a child who is prone to spilling you can buy the special covers on Amazon

  • @elizabethgodlewski9262

The duck tap and baggies can deteriorate in the washing machine and the rice will grow from the water. Its better to use the pellets that is meant for weighted blankets and safe for the washing machine. This way sees to be a lot more work to do.

It's only supposed to be 10% to ensure that the blanket won't suffocate the child while sleeping or cause damage to the child's bones/joints. Basically, the blanket must be easily movable for the child. In the video she should have rounded down, not up to the closest pound.

Kudos for the concept, but the reason weighted blankets work to calm us down is that they "hug" us and conform to our body shape. I don't see how this stiff 'blanket' could ever conform to someone's body shape to gently hug them. This process is how the serotonin is released to produce calm. I would not recommend spending time and money on this.
