A while back, during a middle school “back to school night”, parents were encouraged to bring treats and snacks which were laid out on a table for all to share. I was horrified to find someone put a big box of gummy vitamin packages there and kids were taking them! I quickly pointed this out to one of the science teachers who was rightly panicked and who made sure to remove them but who knows how many kids are them believing they were candy. There is just too much chance for accidents.

Thank god for this video !! I had seen this a few years back and never though it would be critical to me in the future ! My mom really loves gummy candies , and she didn’t feel well in the past few days. Today she told me how she ate 2 jars of these candies only today , and when I inspected it I saw this was the vitamin kind of candies and only 2 were allowed per day ! If I didn’t see this video I wouldn’t have known that I needed to stop her immediately!

To me, as someone who was never in the US, it indeed sounds very scary to sell vitamins as gummies.
You have quite a few videos on the topic of people getting in bad place this way.
Considering we have commercials that aim to sell pharmaceuticals to the masses… it’s not surprising… our “cuisine” tends to learn towards high sugar count in anything possible see white bread.

Read the labels mom! Vitamin is spelled almost exactly the same in Spanish and French.
They’re also clearly sold in the medicine section and other medicines have cartoony pictures of illness or treatment. Even if you can’t read English or Spanish, context clues can help you understand which section they’re in.

@cellgrrl Right! It has been more than a decade since I've been in school and I can hear the countless lectures I attended talking about proton pumps, gradients, and ATP. I remember the overly complicated diagrams and the proteins.
It's sad in a way though. I'm in the financial sector now and no around me shares this interest.

In my country, such vitamin gums cannot be bought in normal stores. We only have them in pharmacies. and if you buy them in the pharmacies, the pharmacy assistant always explains before she give it to you, how you have to use it.
I find it a bit dangerous that you can buy that anywhere in the US.
The US has already too much restrictions on what can obtained over the counter as it is. Wish we returned to the good old days when we could go to the pharmacy and get some testosterone enanthate back home.

My family and I once went to a candy store in Barcelona that had a whole gimmick around its bulk candy being presented like medicine, and you'd take them home in clear plastic pill bottles.
It never really occured to me how dangerous something like that could be, especially with a language barrier going on.

When I was a little kid, in the late 1960s, we were on vacation in Yugoslavia, and I ate half a bottle of Chocks vitamins - they were more of the normal chalky tablet consistency but they tasted good. My parents freaked out and took me to the hospital, but the doctor there said all I needed to do was drink lots of water for the next day or so. I didn’t suffer any Ill effects so I guess he was right. But I’m sure it also helped that the amount of vitamins in these tablets over 50 years ago was probably a lot less than newer ones, plus the number of tablets per bottle was also less than now.

Honestly this is one of the consumption problem videos that I understand because usually when I see "a woman ate gas station sushi. This is compelling reason to not market vitamins in a candy form. Keep the gummy everything and the child friendly stuff but make the bottles very clearly medicinal looking.
Vitamins aren't regulated by the US FDA, unfortunately. This is really dumb for sure, and they need to regulate them. This is why vitamin C gummies were probably allowed to be sold like this in the first place. I agree with you.

I’m 13 and I only have the recommend amount of multi-vitamins/gummy vitamins on the box/container and don’t eat any for people older then me.
This video made me realise It’s very important to read the box and use a translation app like google translate if you don’t speak a language to determine what a food item is if your unsure, especially if there are large letters on the container witch could show important text.

I remember once eating a whole bunch of Tums that my dad had because I thought they were delicious, ended up vomiting afterwards. To this day, I still feel sick when I eat Tums, and have to wash them down with a full cup of water to keep myself from vomiting them back up.
When I was a kid I used to take the Halls vitamin C drops they had pink lemonade, orange and some other flavor in the bag. I probably ate 15-20 a day many many times. It's important to teach kids about flavored medication/pharmaceuticals so they understand it's not candy just tries to encourage them to take their vitamins. Wonder what the opposite of Scurvy is lol.

If you have ever been to any other countries you would realise they have different cultures. Going to Thailand last year, most of their shops were what we would describe as our pharmacies and all of their gummies describe some sort of vitamin intake. It's an easy mistake to make especially when settling into a new country. Especially gummies as that was quite prevalant.
And I would like you all to learn not only basic phrases but basic language of a country not based on the Roman alphabet and see how you do.
