You can take these out with a hole saw. Ive done this fix on several cars already. If the seals leak from the outside, so if you take the seal out, ads RTV in the hole, put the seal back in and seal the seal with rtv again, wait 24 hours it will stop leaking. RND has a terrible track record of not replying to people, and since my seals werent physically broken I sealed mine back up. They currently have 70k on the resealed seals and no leaks.
OK, I finally finished this job. It CAN be done. You use a 2" hole saw. I made a mandrill out of a piece of 2x4 to guide the hole saw inner drill to center the 2" cut on the seal center. It was a 2 step mandrill, but some people use a broom stick handle that fits snug into the seal ID (it's 1" ID). I ended up putting the FelPro seals in UPSIDE DOWN ON PURPOSE. I used Permatex Ultra Black (black is used on rubber). First I cut out the inner ring and cleaned up the hole really good with BrakeKleen. Then I used steel wool to rough-up the mating surfaces. Then I used the RTV to glue the seal into the valve cover. I positioned the seal so inner cone faces out and the lip of the seal faces into the valve cover (it's got that spring around it to tighten it against the tube). It has to go in backwards b/c the seal lip won't go over the tube if you put it in the right way. But when you put it in backwards, the seal lip goes down the tube about 1/4", just like it's supposed to. To install the valve covers on the car, I used a jeweler's flat blade screw driver. But first I applied silicone grease to the seal lip area. Then starting with the rear tube, I gently moved the screw driver blade around the tube, between the tube and seal lip, until the whole lip gripped around the tube. Then I moved to the middle tube and did the same. All the while I put light downward pressure on the valve cover at end of the first seal I installed to keep it from popping off. After slipping the middle seal on the middle tube, I did the seal closest to me. It took about 3 minutes to get the valve cover to slip over the tubes. Worked great! Plus, the seal is facing the traditionally correct direction: Lip faces oil source. Only time will tell how long this seal lasts. But I can guarantee it's better than the garbage seals that come from Chinese rubber. I'd post pics of this job if I could. It was done on a 2004 Infinity G35.
You can just use a Dremel like he did and replace it with a 2010 Honda 2.0L Civic tube seal gaskets double stacked and RTV gasket sealer replacement instead of drilling it out
This is exactly what I was looking for!!! Thank you. I had that exact question. Ok at 140,000 I’m now convinced that I need to replace the covers as well. Thank you again?
Nice explanation. This is the first Nissan Pathfinder I've owned and am realizing that some of the engineering that goes into it is great but other things like this leave me wondering what they were thinking. Thanks.
You’re not thinking outside the box. Take out the old tube seals just like you showed and while they are out, take a dremmel with a small grinding stone and enlarge the holes in the plastic baffle to allow the new seals to go in. It won’t harm a thing and new seals are important to keep oil out of the spark plug tubes.
Then why does FEL- PRO make replacement seals ??? Part # ES72481 seals fit 05-15 vq engines. i did both covers in an hour by using a flat blade screw driver and a hammer to bend the steel ring to the middle of the hole. then needle nose to pull out the old seal.then i put oil on the outside of the new seal and used round stock tapping it with the hammer till the new seal was seated.
Mr X what about nissans before 05? I've been all over for these rings, and it's the exact same number you have there, but They don't fit! They're slightly too big! 03 nissan murano, and I'm stumped...
Jake Kallos Don't waste your time. New covers are only 40-50 bucks each. Not worth the time to chase aftermarket parts and the hour or two to fix the old ones. Plus you know the breathers are not plugged up when you replace insted of Mickey Mouse this repair.
They make replacement seals for metal valve cover i get u figured out the trick to getting them out of plastic but y step over a dollar to grab a dime...
There is a trick to this. From the top side of the cover, poke a flat head through the hole where it grabs on the inside of the gasket. Then lightly tap with a hammer till the plastic holding in the grommet budge's a little. Repeat on middle hole and other end until the plastic housing for the seals comes loose. It does snap back on! The seals fall out, put the new ones it its place and snap back on the plastic housing on the inside of the cover.. boom done
Not a huge deal if leaking in the tubes? Or am I wrong. Or am I just cheap. I just did the gasket and suck out all the oil from the spark plug tube every 15 thousand km. Not a huge deal like the gasket posing a huge 🔥 hazard risk.
Thank you so much for the explanation. I have been searching for these nonexistent spark plug tube seals for hours. At first glance at the cover, these look like replaceable parts. It makes no sense why Nissan design it this way. Such a waste of materials and more expense to the consumer. Thanks again. At least now I know clearly what my next steps should be.

You need to clean that oil off the gasket surface. Once it's contaminated with oil, it will continue leaking eventually even if you tighten it more. If you don't want to worry about it, then replace the gasket but reuse the cover.

Now that's one bad idea isn't it d2f. I worked for Nissan as a technician for many years and always swore that the Japanese made the best motor vehicles. IMHO they were the best anyway.. And I say that because from a technicians point of view Nissan, Toyota vehicles etc were always put together as if they could be easily taken apart again and put back together again. Not so in this case though it seems my friend. I mean replacing whole parts for the sake of a gasket or three... Come-on Nissan! Great vid d2f
I am sure Nissan made the change to plastic purely based on cost as the older Nissan had metal covers. Even the recent Nissan engines now use plastic intake plenum instead of aluminum. Thanks to the bean counters.

I actually have a V6 '03 Altima. I was just trying to gauge the difficulty of this process. It seems the shop owner that told me about this problem was quite skeptical to do this procedure to his own vehicle. I wanted to see what the big deal was since the labor alone was something in the $400 range. For a mechanically inclined person who has dealt with a torque wrench (bled brake lines, changed 2 calipers and did all 4 brakes and rotors while I was down there). Would you recommend me not perform this procedure? Also, I noticed that it was a 6 cylinder engine in the video, but the cover you replaced had only 3 sparkplug cut-outs which means there must be 2 covers. The rear cover looks a bit tougher, did you also do that one or only the front?
+Jonathan Wolff I showed the video of replacing the rear one, but later did also replace the front one when I found it to be leaking. Your 03 Altima has the same V6 engine. The benefit of your vehicle is your rear cover is not buried under the window cowl like my Quest. But all the goodies you need to remove on the engine is the same. I am guessing you found my series of 5 videos on changing the valve cover and spark plugs. Those videos will give you an idea of what's involved. It's up to you to determine your competency on doing this job as I don't know your skill or tools you have available.
like you said i got oi leaked into my spark plug one and i have bad coil, and i also have a lot of white smoke coming out of the exhaust. i can replace the head gasket and cover and the coil, but my question is, will the white smoke be gone, after i replace the coil, the spark plugs and whole cover?
White smoke coming out of exhaust usually mean burning coolant. You have coolant leaking into the engine. It's nothing to do with the spark plug tube filled with oil. I doubt replacing the cover will fix that issue.
Its not because it has a metal collar!! They all have a rubber over metal and most all seals have a tension spring it because the baffle it not removable some baffels are removable if you have a removable baffel the part # es 72481
I have a 05 g35 , I was replacing the valve covers . I also bought the spark plug tube gaskets to replace them as well and now I’m stuck the tube gaskets do not fit what so ever am I off better buying a new valve cover with the tubes already put in ?? Any RECOMMENDATIONS???
Please explain to me how you consider it non-serviceable whenever they sell replacements parts for the spark plug to gasket and the only reason yours is not in serviceable is cuz you don't know how to take it out and you as sreweded it up
what year? because the later ones with plastic valve covers are "unserviceable" and you'll need to get the whole cover ua-cam.com/video/zVhnlOoEhH4/v-deo.html
Love how they make it harder not easier to service making people either Go to dealers to have it fixed Buying a new cam cover just for the seals or Not fixing the car and buying a new one This is robbery at its best! Also i have remember 90's japanese made cars which I still own a few (CB7 Accord, EG CRX, EF CRX and BA5 Prelude) and the oil tube seals didn't leak. Only exception was the CB7 Accord but not till the 20 year old mark (not this 7 to 12 year old mark). Heck the 90's car looked and ran like new at 13 years old back in 2005 when i bought my EG CRX!. It was easy to replace in 1 minute (all 4). The robbery they do now a days.
I have a 2002 infiniti which has the 3.5 v6 in it. When I changed the plugs, there was oil inside one of the coils when I removed it. I didnt remove the plug. Is the spark plug tube seal bad & the reason why oil got inside of there?
start by checking your spark plugs one by one... see if any are worn...this code means that multiple cylinders are misfiring, at least 2,... if you see the spark plugs are worn, go ahead and change them...and inspect your ignition coils as well as these can cause it if they are worn,... another thing that can cause this code is a vacuum leak... check your rubber hoses for cracks to see if they are sucking air,... also check around your intake manifold, as it is more than likely plastic, and the gaskets could need changing,... you can use some carburetor cleaner to spray around the intake manifold... with the engine idling do this,... if it changes it's idle while you are doing this, that means your gaskets need changing,... also you can check your fuel pressure,...it could be low, and need a new gasket,... also it could be a bad battery too... I hope this helps
GUITAR CHORDS-N-MORE I appreciate it but let me tell you something a transmission light came on and the oxygen sensors need to be replaced but the car runs fine still very smooth and fast and reliable
Great videos d2f!!! Do you recommend aftermarket parts or oem parts when replacing the valve covers? And do you know what's a good online store to order replacement parts? Thanks!!!
+Manuel Perez I personally look at the work involved. If the job is very involved like this one, then I rather pay a bit more to get OEM parts. OEM parts are better in quality than aftermarket and better fitment. I sometimes buy aftermarket and sometimes aftermarket. Also think of how long you keeping your car. If long time, then put better parts. As to where to buy, I check everywhere, from Rockauto, to Ebay to Amazon. For my 2004 Quest, I got my valve cover from my local dealer because they only charged about $60 a piece.
People make too big of a deal about plug tube seals not serviceable. That's what ultra grey RTV is made for, clean seals and tubes, apply RTV, stick back on and you are good for another 140k miles. You'll probably break the covers getting them off the second time but when you have almost 300k miles at that point it really doesn't matter does it.
The dealer I go to tell me there are different part number for different year/model of the 3.5. So best to check with the parts department at your local dealer. They will give you the info even if you don't buy from them.
No because you don't know the condition of the spark plug seal. Also consider all the work you have to do to replace it, and you don't want to do this job twice.
Most tube seals you CAN replace. Theres a special tool thats like a small pry bar with a hook at the end and you can basically puncture the rubber and pull the spring out and then you can remove the tube seal. The new ones you just take a rubber mallet and lightly tap them into place evenly till theyre flush with the valve cover where they sat before. Done them before. Most manufacturers will tell you that you cant replace them so they can charge people more for parts for a new valve cover. Also some techs are lazy and dont want to spend the time removing the tube seals and putting new ones in when they can just get new ones with a new valve cover and gasket.
In the video were you show how to replace valve cover you mention using RTV in two corners. If there is a gasket, why is it that you also need the RTV? Thanks in advance.
+Nathaniel Ramos Because the corner may not seal properly over time, so you need to add sealant. This is done by the manufacturer and dealer when they do this.
I recently purchased new valve covers for my 350Z from Auto Parts Zone 2008 out of New Jersey on eBay after 100 miles the spark plug tubes were leaking in all six on both sides these valve covers are crap do not order them do not buy them go OEM buy from Nissan unless you want to pay the labor twice unless you're doing it yourself and you just like to work on your car
I just screwed up the valve cover trying to service the tube seals. It seemed like the under part of the valve cover snapped apart . Needless to say it didn't
its NOT an O-Ring, its a seal.....single lip seal. I hope nobody tries to order it as an O-ring they will have no luck. An O-ring seal looks nothing like this seal.
Get a proper size hole saw and cut those bastards out. You can find spark plug seals separately if you look around, if you really don't want to spend the money on new valve covers, it's worth the effort. I've done it on my maxima and no leaks.
Darn. This is why I only buy domestic cars. Working on my mom's nissan and I see A - The spark plugs sit inside the valve cover instead of on top of it. and B - You have to replace the whole valve cover to fix the leak.
+John Roberts RND Factory took my money, didn't send me parts, and wouldn't respond to my messages. I called them to find out their number has been disconnected.. DONT BUY PARTS FROM RND FACTORY ANYMORE! I came up with an easy solution to use the available felpro seals that are to small to fit in the boss on the valve covers. I machined rings to fit at a light press fit around the boss, and accept the felpro seals that cost 18 bucks for a pack of six..
Oh gosh I am sorry to hear the bad news about the supplier but the cut out tool seems be a logical choice . Thanks for sharing the news because I still have to do mine in the near future before the oil gets inside to cause misfires . I am keeping track of the misfire counts through my blue tooth scanner ,
+John Steenland Got a 2004 G35 that having oil flooded the driver side spark plugs. Are you saying you don't need to the value cover and just use the FelPro tube seals (spark plug seal/gasket)? Next question, what is a "Boss"?
you can hole saw out the old grommet, and use permatex black to re seal the old grommet in the valve cover which will make it as good as new. If you want to try this out do the drivers side first, and get yourself a two inch hole saw with pilot arbor bit. Clamp your valve cover down to a piece of wood and get yourself either a replacement coil pack stem tube, or a stem tube off of a bad coil by cutting off the stem from the body of the coil. By placing the coil pack stem tube into the spark plug hole on the valve cover you will have something to hold the pilot bit on the hole saw steady, and keep it centered. It is very important not to hole saw more than the top layer of plastic which is only about an 1/8" thick, and stay as close to center as possible. once you open up that top layer of plastic the seals will plop right out with almost no effort. you can then clean the suraces of both the old seal and the underlying boss which is where the seal mates to, and generously apply permatex black (which is meant for oily areas) make sure you get the sensor safe type of permatex black. and allow it to cure for 24 hours. Youll be back in action with no more mess!
check the baffle plate to make sure it's sealed or you'll experience bad problems like what this Nissan Tech found : ua-cam.com/video/zVhnlOoEhH4/v-deo.html

+dial2fast Plastic manifolds are superior.
@@TheGuruStud boo! after soo many heat cycles/ plastic and rubber just gets brittle over time
my question if the valve cover was just put on 3 month ago , put still leaking because it wasn't tighten enough 17 inch pounds I believe you stated ,,, my question ,,, should I just loosen all bolts and retighten maybe at 20 inch pounds or do I need to remove the valve cover replace gasket and reuse the cover or do I need to replace cover even though it only 3 month old... is it possible I can reuse cover .
Being 3 months, I would remove the valve cover. Clean the gasket and surface. Reinstall and tighten to proper torque.
thanks buddy you're the man .. i was hoping you said that ... thanks a lot and keep the video coming ..
Saed Jekey more than likely, you might have a cracked head gasket.
Terrific video👍
Thanks.
Its not because it has a metal collar!! They all have a rubber over metal and most all seals have a tension spring it because the baffle it not removable some baffels are removable if you have a removable baffel the part # es 72481
what are the specs (torc:s)
to tightening the bolts back down once you have put the new vc on? thx
each specs are different for each model; they're online car forums for them if you look it up
I have a 05 g35 , I was replacing the valve covers . I also bought the spark plug tube gaskets to replace them as well and now I’m stuck the tube gaskets do not fit what so ever am I off better buying a new valve cover with the tubes already put in ?? Any RECOMMENDATIONS???
i googled somewhere which they used an appropriate sized hole saw to remove it...
What year is this. I have a 04 pathfinder and wanted to know if it's like this before I go to Autozone and order me the spark plug tube.
+David Yang My car is a 2004 Nissan Quest.
Please explain to me how you consider it non-serviceable whenever they sell replacements parts for the spark plug to gasket and the only reason yours is not in serviceable is cuz you don't know how to take it out and you as sreweded it up
My son just bought a Sentra with this leak. Thanks so much for the heads up.
I have a Nissan Altima 2.5 4 cylinder what is th diameter of the o rings I should use
what year? because the later ones with plastic valve covers are "unserviceable" and you'll need to get the whole cover ua-cam.com/video/zVhnlOoEhH4/v-deo.html
Love how they make it harder not easier to service making people either
Go to dealers to have it fixed
Buying a new cam cover just for the seals or
Not fixing the car and buying a new one
This is robbery at its best!
Nissan dun goofed. Subaru is still building good cars.
plus, the cam cover / valve covers were made of metal
Great explanation .I thought that same thing just ordered 4 days ago both valve cover kit
Ong me too I bought a gasket tube seal kit 🥹just seen another video some guy cutting the metal to replace it
I have an 07 Altima,it leaks oil into the spark plugs tubes,so i need to change the whole valve cover? If that is the case,ridiculous....
yea, it's all to reduce assembly costs, but we all get the bad end of the stick for it
Luckily a new valve cover is inexpensive. A Nissan Frontier‘s valve cover is around $40-$50
Possible to augment the old seals with some high-temp or oil resistant RTV?
I have a 2002 Maxima that I'm going to try this with.
Did it work? I was thinking the same thing.
what is this valve cover off of? are xterras the same?
Great explanation and video placement 👏👌👍
I have a 2002 infiniti which has the 3.5 v6 in it. When I changed the plugs, there was oil inside one of the coils when I removed it. I didnt remove the plug.
Is the spark plug tube seal bad & the reason why oil got inside of there?
Yes that means the spark plug tube seal is bad.
sorry for the comment what diameter of o ring or what o ring you use
+johnny perez Sorry don't know the size because I replaced the whole valve cover. Didn't replace the o ring.as i showed it's not serviceable.
+dial2fast ok thanks
What's the point of the silicone in the corners of the valve cover where the cam lobes are?? thats what the new gasket is for to seal all around?
That's a 90 degree turn and can be an area where oil might leak. The method shown is what's done by the manufacturer and also at the Nissan dealer.
dial2fast Thank you! For the quick reply, As for me unfortunately I have to take off the valve cover again then:(
For what year is this cover? I have a 99 sentra gxe
You can press them in
I Changed the valve covers on my 2007 Nissan Murano with 193,000 miles and now it runs fine for 30 seconds than starts misfiring I got a P0300 code
start by checking your spark plugs one by one... see if any are worn...this code means that multiple cylinders are misfiring, at least 2,... if you see the spark plugs are worn, go ahead and change them...and inspect your ignition coils as well as these can cause it if they are worn,... another thing that can cause this code is a vacuum leak... check your rubber hoses for cracks to see if they are sucking air,... also check around your intake manifold, as it is more than likely plastic, and the gaskets could need changing,... you can use some carburetor cleaner to spray around the intake manifold... with the engine idling do this,... if it changes it's idle while you are doing this, that means your gaskets need changing,... also you can check your fuel pressure,...it could be low, and need a new gasket,... also it could be a bad battery too... I hope this helps
GUITAR CHORDS-N-MORE it was the Pcv valve that just had to be tightened so it was an air leak I have 195,000 miles on her now
that is great news! glad it wasn't anything major. :) Praise God. thanks for letting me know
GUITAR CHORDS-N-MORE I appreciate it but let me tell you something a transmission light came on and the oxygen sensors need to be replaced but the car runs fine still very smooth and fast and reliable
that is great that it still drives smooth and reliable. is the transmission switching gears fine? and have the o2 sensors ever been replaced/cleaned?
+dial2fast thank you very much!!!!
People make too big of a deal about plug tube seals not serviceable. That's what ultra grey RTV is made for, clean seals and tubes, apply RTV, stick back on and you are good for another 140k miles. You'll probably break the covers getting them off the second time but when you have almost 300k miles at that point it really doesn't matter does it.
fivepointeightnate yea I have a 2007 Nissan Murano with 193,000 miles and I love it
will the nissan quest valve cover your using fit the 02 nissan maxima sense they have the same engine.
The dealer I go to tell me there are different part number for different year/model of the 3.5. So best to check with the parts department at your local dealer. They will give you the info even if you don't buy from them.
why not remove the part that blocked the tube seal
Thanks for the information and breakdown.
So they’re not serviceable because they’re hard to get out? Because I know I can Buy the replacement seal
He says non-serviceable but I bought the part that comes with it no gaskets and the grommet for spark plugs we just need to know how to put it back in
Would it be recommended to buy a used a valve cover?
No because you don't know the condition of the spark plug seal. Also consider all the work you have to do to replace it, and you don't want to do this job twice.
Thanks for the information !
my maxima sparkes keep filling with oil do u think this is the only problem ?
Do you have to replace both valve covers or just the one that's leaking
You replace the one that is leaking but in my experience, with age, typically both will begin leaking about the same time.
Very informative. Thank you for sharing.
Why do they sell the part if it can't be replace
$$$
My 08 Altima seems to have a metal on top of the valve cover that's connected to an engine mount wth!!?
Yes. It’s such a nuisance. Damn Nissan engineering
New cover, gasket, PCV and new #10's set is less than $50. It's easily repaired by even the least mechanically inclined.
You literally just showed how to service the tube seal. They sell replacement seal at your neares part store. The new seals + some rtv and your good.
Thanks good man 👍
Would you use only OEM parts or are aftermarket covers as good. I have seen some on e-bay that are at a reasonable price for a set.
ua-cam.com/video/zVhnlOoEhH4/v-deo.html just check the seals if the aftermarket did it correctly like what OEM specified
rndfactory com sells a kit to replace the grommets.
is the quest the same as pathfinder
Thanks
New valve covers and all gaskets on Ebay $59
Thank you
I just screwed up the valve cover trying to service the tube seals. It seemed like the under part of the valve cover snapped apart . Needless to say it didn't
hello where I can fine the spark plug tube seal for the nissan
does the HR need the same procedure?
its NOT an O-Ring, its a seal.....single lip seal. I hope nobody tries to order it as an O-ring they will have no luck. An O-ring seal looks nothing like this seal.
To be fair he never said what car he was working on. below i was working on a 07 Xterra with a VQ40DE engine.
WHY THUMBS DOWN? IDIOTS WANTED A CHEAP ASS WAY TO SOLVE THEIR PROBLEM?
GREAT VIDEO AND INFORMATION!
aka oil seal.
Get a proper size hole saw and cut those bastards out. You can find spark plug seals separately if you look around, if you really don't want to spend the money on new valve covers, it's worth the effort. I've done it on my maxima and no leaks.
rtv 15 dollars. done
?
👍👍👍
Darn. This is why I only buy domestic cars. Working on my mom's nissan and I see A - The spark plugs sit inside the valve cover instead of on top of it. and B - You have to replace the whole valve cover to fix the leak.
It's actually not exactly true! This site gives you the tool with the kit to do the job! www.rndfactory.com/Web/instruction-nissan-A.html
Next question, what is a "Boss"?
angelisone If you follow this link it will show how !!! www.rndfactory.com/Web/instruction-nissan-A.html
you can hole saw out the old grommet, and use permatex black to re seal the old grommet in the valve cover which will make it as good as new.
Ebay 28.00 aftermarket cover..
check the baffle plate to make sure it's sealed or you'll experience bad problems like what this Nissan Tech found : ua-cam.com/video/zVhnlOoEhH4/v-deo.html
