In this video I will show you why the valve cover is not a serviceable item. The spark plug o ring is sandwiched in the valve cover and cannot be replaced.
There are some people that said they can use a hole saw to drill the old one out and then install the new one with silicone sealant. Considering all the debris you get from drilling and you have to make sure it's perfectly clean, if you don't do it right, it can cause more damage than what a new valve cover cost.

Thanks for the explanation and demonstration. I recently had to change the whole value Cover due to leak
This just saved me so much trouble and work trying to discover this for myself. Thank you 😂 👏🏾
You can take these out with a hole saw. Ive done this fix on several cars already. If the seals leak from the outside, so if you take the seal out, ads RTV in the hole, put the seal back in and seal the seal with rtv again, wait 24 hours it will stop leaking. RND has a terrible track record of not replying to people, and since my seals werent physically broken I sealed mine back up. They currently have 70k on the resealed seals and no leaks.
Thanks for the information and breakdown.
Fantastic vid i have e51 3.5 2005 and mine leaking down the spark plug tube holes so this means i need to get the whole rocker cover ?
What if the spark plug gasket already broke and you have oil in your spark plug cylinder how do you get the oil out
I did not know to to brace the motor and need to Jack my motor back to the mounts what's best way to do this
Thanks brother, you saved me a ton of time💪🏼🙏🏼
I have an 05 murano, there’s oil inside the spark plugs tubes, does that oil leaks, caused by that,O-rings ? Not from those spark plug tubes that connects at the bottom? So, If i replace the valve cover,it will stop the oil leaks ?
where can I buy the valve seals in fiji
Terrific video👍
Thanks.
Thanks for the information !
This is exactly what I was looking for!!! Thank you. I had that exact question. Ok at 140,000 I’m now convinced that I need to replace the covers as well. Thank you again?
@johnny Macon im done with their shit
OK, I finally finished this job. It CAN be done. You use a 2" hole saw. I made a mandrill out of a piece of 2x4 to guide the hole saw inner drill to center the 2" cut on the seal center. It was a 2 step mandrill, but some people use a broom stick handle that fits snug into the seal ID (it's 1" ID). I ended up putting the FelPro seals in UPSIDE DOWN ON PURPOSE. I used Permatex Ultra Black (black is used on rubber). First I cut out the inner ring and cleaned up the hole really good with BrakeKleen. Then I used steel wool to rough-up the mating surfaces. Then I used the RTV to glue the seal into the valve cover. I positioned the seal so inner cone faces out and the lip of the seal faces into the valve cover (it's got that spring around it to tighten it against the tube). It has to go in backwards b/c the seal lip won't go over the tube if you put it in the right way. But when you put it in backwards, the seal lip goes down the tube about 1/4", just like it's supposed to. To install the valve covers on the car, I used a jeweler's flat blade screw driver. But first I applied silicone grease to the seal lip area. Then starting with the rear tube, I gently moved the screw driver blade around the tube, between the tube and seal lip, until the whole lip gripped around the tube. Then I moved to the middle tube and did the same. All the while I put light downward pressure on the valve cover at end of the first seal I installed to keep it from popping off. After slipping the middle seal on the middle tube, I did the seal closest to me. It took about 3 minutes to get the valve cover to slip over the tubes. Worked great! Plus, the seal is facing the traditionally correct direction: Lip faces oil source. Only time will tell how long this seal lasts. But I can guarantee it's better than the garbage seals that come from Chinese rubber. I'd post pics of this job if I could. It was done on a 2004 Infinity G35.
did it last?
share the pics on an online nissan car forum!
You can just use a Dremel like he did and replace it with a 2010 Honda 2.0L Civic tube seal gaskets double stacked and RTV gasket sealer replacement instead of drilling it out
Why do all of this work for a $35 valve cover?
@@trailslug893 Where did u find the cover for so cheap? Nissan Quest cover is over 100.
I have a 2009 Sentra ser spec v 2.5 QR25DE (B16)... got a missfire P0301 and oil leak in #1 cylinder.Does my sentra has serviceable cylinders gaskets,or do i need to buy the valve cover?
Great explanation and video placement 👏👌👍
Very informative. Thank you for sharing.
what is this valve cover off of? are xterras the same?
Thanks for the video, you answered my questions very detailed. I wonder if any other company make a metal aftermarket valve covers for Titans ? . I have 190k on my Titan and I noticed that leaking and I was thinking even put silicone around but I guess it will worthless. Ones again thanks for your video 👍👍👍👍👍
Anyone know how to remove water pump on a 06 Xterra, water pump won't budge tried to pry out and won't move at all, even after inserting screws which broke off the lobes of the pump.
do you think it is the same in a nissan altima 3.5 ze????
Honda 2.0L tube seal gasket doubled up can be used to replace the leaking tube seal gasket on your 3.5L Infiniti/Nissan
my maxima sparkes keep filling with oil do u think this is the only problem ?
Great explanation .I thought that same thing just ordered 4 days ago both valve cover kit
Ong me too I bought a gasket tube seal kit 🥹just seen another video some guy cutting the metal to replace it
For what year is this cover? I have a 99 sentra gxe
is the quest the same as pathfinder
How can you tell if its the oring and not the other gasket.
Great videos d2f!!! Do you recommend aftermarket parts or oem parts when replacing the valve covers? And do you know what's a good online store to order replacement parts? Thanks!!!
+Manuel Perez I personally look at the work involved. If the job is very involved like this one, then I rather pay a bit more to get OEM parts. OEM parts are better in quality than aftermarket and better fitment. I sometimes buy aftermarket and sometimes aftermarket. Also think of how long you keeping your car. If long time, then put better parts. As to where to buy, I check everywhere, from Rockauto, to Ebay to Amazon. For my 2004 Quest, I got my valve cover from my local dealer because they only charged about $60 a piece.
+dial2fast thank you very much!!!!
Thank you
Nice explanation. This is the first Nissan Pathfinder I've owned and am realizing that some of the engineering that goes into it is great but other things like this leave me wondering what they were thinking. Thanks.
They were thinking they were going to make money selling valve covers, compared to no money, since who buys tube seals from the dealers? They just get a fel-pro kit that includes everything. Lol. Same reason they did a million other things that seem to spit in the face of the DIY'er.
You’re not thinking outside the box. Take out the old tube seals just like you showed and while they are out, take a dremmel with a small grinding stone and enlarge the holes in the plastic baffle to allow the new seals to go in. It won’t harm a thing and new seals are important to keep oil out of the spark plug tubes.
Thanks
What must be changed i thing i have same problem
Thanks good man 👍
Anyone know if this applies to an ‘04 Pathfinder SE (V6 3.5L)?
what are the specs (torc:s)
to tightening the bolts back down once you have put the new vc on? thx
each specs are different for each model; they're online car forums for them if you look it up
What the part number for the ruber gastes
I have a Nissan Altima 2.5 4 cylinder what is th diameter of the o rings I should use
what year? because the later ones with plastic valve covers are "unserviceable" and you'll need to get the whole cover ua-cam.com/video/zVhnlOoEhH4/v-deo.html
There is a trick to this. From the top side of the cover, poke a flat head through the hole where it grabs on the inside of the gasket. Then lightly tap with a hammer till the plastic holding in the grommet budge's a little. Repeat on middle hole and other end until the plastic housing for the seals comes loose. It does snap back on! The seals fall out, put the new ones it its place and snap back on the plastic housing on the inside of the cover.. boom done
I cannot picture what you said but I think youre on to something...
@@GeorgeWPush at least someone knows what there doing
You should make a UA-cam video
I have a 05 g35 , I was replacing the valve covers . I also bought the spark plug tube gaskets to replace them as well and now I’m stuck the tube gaskets do not fit what so ever am I off better buying a new valve cover with the tubes already put in ?? Any RECOMMENDATIONS???
i googled somewhere which they used an appropriate sized hole saw to remove it...
Possible to augment the old seals with some high-temp or oil resistant RTV?
I have a 2002 Maxima that I'm going to try this with.
Did it work? I was thinking the same thing.
I actually have a V6 '03 Altima. I was just trying to gauge the difficulty of this process. It seems the shop owner that told me about this problem was quite skeptical to do this procedure to his own vehicle. I wanted to see what the big deal was since the labor alone was something in the $400 range. For a mechanically inclined person who has dealt with a torque wrench (bled brake lines, changed 2 calipers and did all 4 brakes and rotors while I was down there). Would you recommend me not perform this procedure? Also, I noticed that it was a 6 cylinder engine in the video, but the cover you replaced had only 3 sparkplug cut-outs which means there must be 2 covers. The rear cover looks a bit tougher, did you also do that one or only the front?
+Jonathan Wolff I showed the video of replacing the rear one, but later did also replace the front one when I found it to be leaking. Your 03 Altima has the same V6 engine. The benefit of your vehicle is your rear cover is not buried under the window cowl like my Quest. But all the goodies you need to remove on the engine is the same. I am guessing you found my series of 5 videos on changing the valve cover and spark plugs. Those videos will give you an idea of what's involved. It's up to you to determine your competency on doing this job as I don't know your skill or tools you have available.
What year is this. I have a 04 pathfinder and wanted to know if it's like this before I go to Autozone and order me the spark plug tube.
+David Yang My car is a 2004 Nissan Quest.
reason I say this is because when I did change the cover ,I didn't tighten it at 17inch pound because I didn't have the inch pound torch wrench , so I tighten and snugged . 3 month later ,I changed the oil and sure enough it was leaking .. so I order the wrench ,and ready to tackle it again ,what do you suggest I do ,#1 loosen the nuts and retour it at 20 inch pounds , or re order the cover and gasket
You need to clean that oil off the gasket surface. Once it's contaminated with oil, it will continue leaking eventually even if you tighten it more. If you don't want to worry about it, then replace the gasket but reuse the cover.
thanks I sure will .

I have a 2002 infiniti which has the 3.5 v6 in it. When I changed the plugs, there was oil inside one of the coils when I removed it. I didnt remove the plug.
Is the spark plug tube seal bad & the reason why oil got inside of there?
Yes that means the spark plug tube seal is bad.
Do you have to replace both valve covers or just the one that's leaking
You replace the one that is leaking but in my experience, with age, typically both will begin leaking about the same time.
will the nissan quest valve cover your using fit the 02 nissan maxima sense they have the same engine.
The dealer I go to tell me there are different part number for different year/model of the 3.5. So best to check with the parts department at your local dealer. They will give you the info even if you don't buy from them.
I just watched the video about replacing the valve cover. I have a 2008 Nissan Sentra with oil in the number 1spark plug tube. I know that can mean o ring issues and more. Is there any chance it could mean the valve cover only?
If there is oil in spark plug tube, then the tube seal is leaking. If your valve cover is leaking, it will leak to the outside of the engine.
@@dial2fast I see small puddles in around my plugs it smokes like crazy when the motor warms up, does that still mean its leaking around the plugs.
like you said i got oi leaked into my spark plug one and i have bad coil, and i also have a lot of white smoke coming out of the exhaust. i can replace the head gasket and cover and the coil, but my question is, will the white smoke be gone, after i replace the coil, the spark plugs and whole cover?
White smoke coming out of exhaust usually mean burning coolant. You have coolant leaking into the engine. It's nothing to do with the spark plug tube filled with oil. I doubt replacing the cover will fix that issue.
Saed Jekey more than likely, you might have a cracked head gasket.
Would it be recommended to buy a used a valve cover?
No because you don't know the condition of the spark plug seal. Also consider all the work you have to do to replace it, and you don't want to do this job twice.
I have an 07 Altima,it leaks oil into the spark plugs tubes,so i need to change the whole valve cover? If that is the case,ridiculous....
yea, it's all to reduce assembly costs, but we all get the bad end of the stick for it
Would you use only OEM parts or are aftermarket covers as good. I have seen some on e-bay that are at a reasonable price for a set.
ua-cam.com/video/zVhnlOoEhH4/v-deo.html just check the seals if the aftermarket did it correctly like what OEM specified
What's the worse that can happen from leaking seals? I've just been quoted $1200 plus for rocker cover and seals which is a lot to pay on an older car.
Oil making its way into the spark plug tube will drastically affect the engines performance, leading to misfires, increased oil consumption. In extreme cases, it can even lead to an engine fire.
rndfactory com sells a kit to replace the grommets.
My 2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8 has an aluminum valve cover and the spark plugs tubes are leaking oil into the spark plugs. Every time I look online for the right kind of seals they say that the tube seals don't fit my car. I think they are thinking I have the plastic valve cover
My son just bought a Sentra with this leak. Thanks so much for the heads up.
Thank you so much for the explanation. I have been searching for these nonexistent spark plug tube seals for hours. At first glance at the cover, these look like replaceable parts. It makes no sense why Nissan design it this way. Such a waste of materials and more expense to the consumer. Thanks again. At least now I know clearly what my next steps should be.
Makes perfect sense..they make them so you have to buy the whole valve cover for more than $400 EACH!! Instead of just selling you the seals..but they don’t count on smart people figuring out workarounds like the holesaw idea… #stealership
@@fusionfabworkx3538 Dang! That's a great idea. I didn't know there were generic plugs out there that could work. I could have cut out the existing built-in gaskets and replaced them with these. I keep in mind for the future. Thanks.
He says non-serviceable but I bought the part that comes with it no gaskets and the grommet for spark plugs we just need to know how to put it back in
my question if the valve cover was just put on 3 month ago , put still leaking because it wasn't tighten enough 17 inch pounds I believe you stated ,,, my question ,,, should I just loosen all bolts and retighten maybe at 20 inch pounds or do I need to remove the valve cover replace gasket and reuse the cover or do I need to replace cover even though it only 3 month old... is it possible I can reuse cover .
Being 3 months, I would remove the valve cover. Clean the gasket and surface. Reinstall and tighten to proper torque.
thanks buddy you're the man .. i was hoping you said that ... thanks a lot and keep the video coming ..
Then why does FEL- PRO make replacement seals ??? Part # ES72481 seals fit 05-15 vq engines. i did both covers in an hour by using a flat blade screw driver and a hammer to bend the steel ring to the middle of the hole. then needle nose to pull out the old seal.then i put oil on the outside of the new seal and used round stock tapping it with the hammer till the new seal was seated.
Mr X what about nissans before 05? I've been all over for these rings, and it's the exact same number you have there, but They don't fit! They're slightly too big! 03 nissan murano, and I'm stumped...
Jake Kallos Don't waste your time. New covers are only 40-50 bucks each. Not worth the time to chase aftermarket parts and the hour or two to fix the old ones. Plus you know the breathers are not plugged up when you replace insted of Mickey Mouse this repair.
They make replacement seals for metal valve cover i get u figured out the trick to getting them out of plastic but y step over a dollar to grab a dime...
I did a valve cover in the past.. I guess it was u serviceable too but I replaced those.. Just used a mallet and thin screw driver. Dented them in and popped them out then I put in the new ones...
KornShaDoW097 where did you get new ones
@@gabriel2148 says he did one in the past, but doesnt say what vehicle..
..respectfully disagree...seals are available, and with proper tools and common mechanical sense, can be replaced fairly easily.
Please help! I’m being told by 2 mechanics that I have to replace the covers
@@jacispears1594yeah but you can get the whole cover online for like $40 with the gasket which is super cheap.
Please explain to me how you consider it non-serviceable whenever they sell replacements parts for the spark plug to gasket and the only reason yours is not in serviceable is cuz you don't know how to take it out and you as sreweded it up
sorry for the comment what diameter of o ring or what o ring you use
+johnny perez Sorry don't know the size because I replaced the whole valve cover. Didn't replace the o ring.as i showed it's not serviceable.
+dial2fast ok thanks
My 08 Altima seems to have a metal on top of the valve cover that's connected to an engine mount wth!!?
Yes. It’s such a nuisance. Damn Nissan engineering
Not a huge deal if leaking in the tubes? Or am I wrong. Or am I just cheap. I just did the gasket and suck out all the oil from the spark plug tube every 15 thousand km.
Not a huge deal like the gasket posing a huge 🔥 hazard risk.
Love how they make it harder not easier to service making people either
Go to dealers to have it fixed
Buying a new cam cover just for the seals or
Not fixing the car and buying a new one
This is robbery at its best!
Also i have remember 90's japanese made cars which I still own a few (CB7 Accord, EG CRX, EF CRX and BA5 Prelude) and the oil tube seals didn't leak. Only exception was the CB7 Accord but not till the 20 year old mark (not this 7 to 12 year old mark). Heck the 90's car looked and ran like new at 13 years old back in 2005 when i bought my EG CRX!. It was easy to replace in 1 minute (all 4).
The robbery they do now a days.
Nissan dun goofed. Subaru is still building good cars.
plus, the cam cover / valve covers were made of metal
Now that's one bad idea isn't it d2f. I worked for Nissan as a technician for many years and always swore that the Japanese made the best motor vehicles. IMHO they were the best anyway.. And I say that because from a technicians point of view Nissan, Toyota vehicles etc were always put together as if they could be easily taken apart again and put back together again. Not so in this case though it seems my friend. I mean replacing whole parts for the sake of a gasket or three... Come-on Nissan!
Great vid d2f
I am sure Nissan made the change to plastic purely based on cost as the older Nissan had metal covers. Even the recent Nissan engines now use plastic intake plenum instead of aluminum. Thanks to the bean counters.
+dial2fast Plastic manifolds are superior.
@@TheGuruStud boo! after soo many heat cycles/ plastic and rubber just gets brittle over time
thanks for explaining this. my spark plug seals are leaking, i went to order valve cover gaskets and noticed the spark plug seals weren't included, wasn't sure why.
leave to Nissan to come up with this nonsense BS design to make more money on service.
U can just buy new tube seals n replace them without changing the valve cover itself. As long as u remove the old ones carefully without damaging or bending anything around while u taking the old ones out
People make too big of a deal about plug tube seals not serviceable. That's what ultra grey RTV is made for, clean seals and tubes, apply RTV, stick back on and you are good for another 140k miles. You'll probably break the covers getting them off the second time but when you have almost 300k miles at that point it really doesn't matter does it.
fivepointeightnate yea I have a 2007 Nissan Murano with 193,000 miles and I love it
Its not because it has a metal collar!! They all have a rubber over metal and most all seals have a tension spring it because the baffle it not removable some baffels are removable if you have a removable baffel the part # es 72481
does the HR need the same procedure?
You can press them in
So they’re not serviceable because they’re hard to get out? Because I know I can Buy the replacement seal
Most tube seals you CAN replace. Theres a special tool thats like a small pry bar with a hook at the end and you can basically puncture the rubber and pull the spring out and then you can remove the tube seal. The new ones you just take a rubber mallet and lightly tap them into place evenly till theyre flush with the valve cover where they sat before. Done them before. Most manufacturers will tell you that you cant replace them so they can charge people more for parts for a new valve cover. Also some techs are lazy and dont want to spend the time removing the tube seals and putting new ones in when they can just get new ones with a new valve cover and gasket.
Just buy a brand new v/c from Amazon it comes with everything you need 40 to 50 bucks
ua-cam.com/video/zVhnlOoEhH4/v-deo.html heed this nissan tech's warning and check if the aftermarket actually sealed the baffle plate correctly before the install. if not, RETURN and get the OEM part
@@ricebike i bought an OEM from nissan on amazon for 85 bucks. just installed a week ago. car runs so much smoother. doesnt smell like burning oil as much anymore. no more misfiring popping sounds at higher RPM. gonna check around 200 miles to see if im still burning any oil
@@volitiontrader7037 yea, if it doesn't have NISSAN stamped on the cover, i'll be avoiding it
hello where I can fine the spark plug tube seal for the nissan
why not remove the part that blocked the tube seal
What's the point of the silicone in the corners of the valve cover where the cam lobes are?? thats what the new gasket is for to seal all around?
That's a 90 degree turn and can be an area where oil might leak. The method shown is what's done by the manufacturer and also at the Nissan dealer.
dial2fast Thank you! For the quick reply, As for me unfortunately I have to take off the valve cover again then:(
New cover, gasket, PCV and new #10's set is less than $50. It's easily repaired by even the least mechanically inclined.
Why do they sell the part if it can't be replace
$$$
To be fair he never said what car he was working on. below i was working on a 07 Xterra with a VQ40DE engine.
In the video were you show how to replace valve cover you mention using RTV in two corners. If there is a gasket, why is it that you also need the RTV? Thanks in advance.
+Nathaniel Ramos Because the corner may not seal properly over time, so you need to add sealant. This is done by the manufacturer and dealer when they do this.
👍👍👍
I recently purchased new valve covers for my 350Z from Auto Parts Zone 2008 out of New Jersey on eBay after 100 miles the spark plug tubes were leaking in all six on both sides these valve covers are crap do not order them do not buy them go OEM buy from Nissan unless you want to pay the labor twice unless you're doing it yourself and you just like to work on your car
Luckily a new valve cover is inexpensive. A Nissan Frontier‘s valve cover is around $40-$50
OMG :O
I just screwed up the valve cover trying to service the tube seals. It seemed like the under part of the valve cover snapped apart . Needless to say it didn't
New valve covers and all gaskets on Ebay $59
Darn. This is why I only buy domestic cars. Working on my mom's nissan and I see A - The spark plugs sit inside the valve cover instead of on top of it. and B - You have to replace the whole valve cover to fix the leak.
I Changed the valve covers on my 2007 Nissan Murano with 193,000 miles and now it runs fine for 30 seconds than starts misfiring I got a P0300 code
start by checking your spark plugs one by one... see if any are worn...this code means that multiple cylinders are misfiring, at least 2,... if you see the spark plugs are worn, go ahead and change them...and inspect your ignition coils as well as these can cause it if they are worn,... another thing that can cause this code is a vacuum leak... check your rubber hoses for cracks to see if they are sucking air,... also check around your intake manifold, as it is more than likely plastic, and the gaskets could need changing,... you can use some carburetor cleaner to spray around the intake manifold... with the engine idling do this,... if it changes it's idle while you are doing this, that means your gaskets need changing,... also you can check your fuel pressure,...it could be low, and need a new gasket,... also it could be a bad battery too... I hope this helps
GUITAR CHORDS-N-MORE it was the Pcv valve that just had to be tightened so it was an air leak I have 195,000 miles on her now
that is great news! glad it wasn't anything major. :) Praise God. thanks for letting me know
GUITAR CHORDS-N-MORE I appreciate it but let me tell you something a transmission light came on and the oxygen sensors need to be replaced but the car runs fine still very smooth and fast and reliable
that is great that it still drives smooth and reliable. is the transmission switching gears fine? and have the o2 sensors ever been replaced/cleaned?
WHY THUMBS DOWN? IDIOTS WANTED A CHEAP ASS WAY TO SOLVE THEIR PROBLEM?
GREAT VIDEO AND INFORMATION!
You literally just showed how to service the tube seal. They sell replacement seal at your neares part store. The new seals + some rtv and your good.
Get a proper size hole saw and cut those bastards out. You can find spark plug seals separately if you look around, if you really don't want to spend the money on new valve covers, it's worth the effort. I've done it on my maxima and no leaks.
its NOT an O-Ring, its a seal.....single lip seal. I hope nobody tries to order it as an O-ring they will have no luck. An O-ring seal looks nothing like this seal.
rtv 15 dollars. done
?
aka oil seal.
To much work you can buy a whole new gasket cover on Amazon for 54.00 replace the whole thing
Ebay 28.00 aftermarket cover..
check the baffle plate to make sure it's sealed or you'll experience bad problems like what this Nissan Tech found : ua-cam.com/video/zVhnlOoEhH4/v-deo.html
Maybe you just need the right tool..lol
