  • The Lower Mainland of British Columbia has several clipped hatchery Coho Salmon programs with great return numbers for local fishing in the fall and winter.
Rain continued to come down on Wed, Oct 18th. The water level graph was more like a yoyo. Figured some rivers were a write-off, so Mark (@clipped.adipose) and I hatched a plan.
We'd go check out two different flows first light and report on any potential or actual success.
When I got to my first location, it was drastically changed from a day earlier. Nearly unfishable with tons of debris coming down. Checked higher up, and conditions were brown. Visibility wasn't zero, and there were some fish moving, but I couldn't convince any to bite.
Fortunately, Mark reported a fishy looking spot at another river. As soon as he hooked up, I was packing up and on my way to find my way into him blind.
On my way in, I past a couple of people with exactly what you want to see when you're going fishing... a stick balanced perfectly loaded with coho! Eventually wound my way through the trees and found Mark.
He already had three coho on a stringer and said spoons were lighting it up.
The water looked super Float friendly... so I grabbed the float rod and some Roe. The rest was a BLUR... the float was dropping nearly every cast. I had a limit in no time and enjoyed many more hits and misses. A few losses for good measure and even a broken swivel.
Wow! What an amazing late morning bite in the rain. We were soaked through, but feeling super excited to have had this experience!
I feel super fortunate to have great fishing companions to search out and share information with. It really helps stay on top of fish and the learning curve flattens much faster, the more friendly lines you have in the water.
Mark handed a fish off to an older gentleman below him and I handed one off to Ben, one of our junior fisherman out on the river before we left.
This is what great memories are made of.
Dress warm... it's cold out there.
I hope you enjoyed this fun little session on the water. Of course it is much more exciting being the guy on the back of the rod.
