  • COLD WEATHER COHO River fishing the Vedder Chilliwack River Canal during October. This a compilation video of several evenings out fishing on the river this past fall. Always entertaining to hit after work with the guys in the evening. That last light bite can be amazing.
    Oct 25th was a frigid evening at the river. The outflow wind was blowing hard, and the temps were low. Night time was well below freezing, and snow capped the mountains.
    It might be miserable being outside in this kind of weather, but the bite can be intense. Surprisingly, more guys were toughing it out in the canal than usual this time of year. Shouldn't have surprised me since it has been a busy year in general.
    That cold seems to trigger the coho. They are more aggressive than in September. They seem to hit everything without hesitancy. So, while there may be less fish around, they are more eager to drop your float.
    I was out with @go2fishing_bc and my colleague Hirk. We enjoyed an absolute flurry of last light action. A huge school of jacks was dropping floats left right and center. A few adults in the mix as well.
    I hooked this beautiful chrome coho on a bead as the sun angle dropped low before it dipped behind the mountain to the west.
    We seriously were freezing, but when the fish moved in and the bite went off, we warmed right up as excitement and adrenaline heated us up.
    If you didn't get a chance this year prior to the rain, try it out next year. Lures, beads, and roe are highly effective for fish pushing up through the canal. It is a very HIT and MISS fishery.... but when it HITS, it makes the misses worthwhile.
    I have seen so many memes about fishermen who take pictures of sunsets. I enjoy fishing sunsets and photographing them... but I usually catch fish as well.
    Thanks for watching this random mashup video from last season from when I remembered to turn the camera on. It really is nothing special, just some great action with friends. Hope to make more videos next season with more of an adventure feel to them.

    This is really cool! What is the craziest type of fish you caught in the vedder river? How deep does the water go? How much do you usually catch each time you go fishing?

      I wouldn't say there is anything crazy in there. I have caught COHO, Chinook, Chum, Pink, sockeye, pike minnow, rainbow trout, bull trout, steelhead and mountain whitefish. There are spots where the water might be 15 to 20 deep I'd suspect. Most is fairly shallow 1 to 5 feet deep. Every time I go I catch a different amount. Sometimes nothing, sometimes more than 10. Just depends on the day and what's around and weather/ water conditions.

    Coop video Tks, I had carpal release done 2 years but think I need it again lol but that gets in the way of fishing time.

      Thanks... yeah this numb painful hands is terrible when its flaring up, but like you say I always have something going on. My Plastic Surgeon was supposed to call me last Monday, but I never got the call. So will have to contact the office and see what's going on. Would be nice to not have to suffer from this crazy cramping, painful hands during most of the year.

      @@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures absolutely, it was nice not having the constant pain, mines in the middle of my wrist. Lasted about 4-5 months the started coming back. Been stubborn and need to contact my surgeon again at some point again. Never good timing it seems lol

    Nice catch ! Awesome, what size and color of beads do you recommend ? I struggled last season

      What did you try last year? I use a range of soft beads with quite a bit of success. Usually sized 10 mm to 14 mm depending on lighting and how cloudy the water is. Think if the bead is harder or easier for you to see it probably is for the salmon too. So pick a bead that is easy for you do see in dirty or dark conditions. In bright conditions going smaller usually works better. I use a variety of colors but usually a rand of orange to pink. I like the ones with white mottled coloration as well. The key really has nothing to do with the bead though. You have to know where the bead is in the water column. It its dragging on the bottom you likely aren't catching anything. I try to keep that bead 1 to 2 feet off bottom. In deeper water it can even be up higher off bottom. I'd say this is the main issue of guys not being able hook fish with beads. Set the float shorter than you would think and then go longer. I change float length a lot till I start getting bites. That's my recommendations.

      You fish the Vedder River? You ever see me out there? If you see me don't be a stranger. I wouldn't know who you are so you'd have to introduce yourself.

    Curious, do you find certain spots on the canal better than others?

    • @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures
      @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures  3 місяці тому

      Well there generally are guys fishing the length of the canal. You will find them bunched together in the typically deeper spots where fish slow down a bit. To me it doesn't seen to matter where I fish since I generally fish the canal when fish are traveling through. So they have to pass every section. So I just try to find a spot away from the crowds. That's the goal if you ask me, but not many people do that. So usually open spots between the busy sections.

    Kind of sampled a few spots. Could not see anywhere you described the rig you were using.

    • @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures
      @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures  3 місяці тому +1

      Yeah, sorry I've just recently started doing more talking on a few videos and one will come which shows the rig more... at least I'll have to focus on putting one out before next season. For the mean time you'll have to bear with my description. I use about a 25 gram float pegged in place with a couple float stops above and below the float. with a sliding egg lead sinker above a swivel. The goal is getting the weight balancing the float so the float is just sitting with the colorful top out of the water and the rest below the surface standing straight up and down. Then about a 18 to 24 inch 12 pound fluorocarbon leader with a Clear Drift Tackle Soft bead or BNR Soft Bead. I use sizes 10 mm to 14 mm sized beads. Usually in choosing a bead, the clearer the water is you can downsize and the dirtier the water the larger the bead you get away with. I usually put the bead on a stopper about 1.5 inches above a No 1, or No 2 salmon style hook. I use different kinds of hooks. Have to find what you prefer. You can also put the soft bead right on the hook. You will lose more beads with hook pegged beads though. Hope that helps. If you need more tips on the actual rig check "Fishing with Rod" he has some videos on the set up. I learned from him.

      @@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures Thanks for that. I appreciate it. The reason I watch videos is to learn something. I want to become a better fisherman and catch my own. Might try this rig this fall on my local river.
