    I love this scene Lucy is so beautiful and I love the way she moves to convey her character. Her dance with Van Johnson in the I Love Lucy in California episode shows also what a great dancer she was.

    This was a fun bit of behind the scenes info. If I had to guess why Jerry Trent was chosen for such a prominent position, it's that the producers/director reasoned a fresh face was needed, rather than use someone who'd be recognized from earlier numbers. Audiences suspend their disbelief in musicals, of course, but seeing the same guy on her arm here that you recognize (from "It's Today", or the tango, or the "Man in the Moon" sequence) might take you out of the movie's own reality. Anyway, he was obviously a real professional & pulled it off splendidly. Thanks for sharing!

      @@phillipleconte3715 Yes, it doesn't hurt that he is extremely photogenic! What appears to be a genuinely positive, joyful personality is clearly evident, even in just the course of this final verse of the number.

      Well, plus the fact that he and the other fellow (Mark) weren't really that much taller than Lucy, hence (1) much taller men would have made her look small; (2) she would then have to look up to them; and (3) you couldn't get Lucy & her 2 consorts in the same camera frame on one level if the two men were much TALLER than her. That's primarily why.

    I love Lucy, really I do, but why did she do this? Have to say don't like the story Mame period but this was the biggest disaster of her career. She was determined she was going to do it putting her own money into it. Have to say once I saw it, it was not as bad as everybody said, but it was not good by any means. It bombed at the box office.

    • @kaila62kaila

      I keep watching and totally enjoying this film over the years. What bomb? I don't get the bad reviews. Was it politics? Did she get on someone bad side?

    • @mediterraneanworld
      @mediterraneanworld 2 роки тому +1

      She had always wanted to do a musical and think about her career, the worst thing about this was that she really stopped working after Mama, and even when she did good serious drama like Stone Pillow, the public wanted Lucy. Movie also came out at a bad time when times were changing - so what about her voice - that's not really the point sometimes - musicals and female performers are really raked over the coals. Now there is that disaster Funny Girl going on and everyone tried not to critique the star.

    I was forced to sit through this among multiple junior high school classes. One was an art class (we were making a small 8mm film). Another was glee/choir. There even was a 3rd class, maybe English. I guess the school rented the film reels cheap because it was a bomb and they just cued it up because they didn't create class assignments that week. I remember asking why her hair kept changing color throughout. My choir instructor said the film spanned decades. I didn't buy it because Lucy looked older throughout the picture.

      She looked old, and? She was to be his aunt - they don't say how old she was - and buy the way Ginger Rogers also played Name. There are lots of films that bomb that are later held up as classics. Wizard of Oz did not do great box office initially for example. You were forced? Where did you go to school, Sing Sing?

    If Lucille Ball had not put her own money in the film, I am sure the producers would have dubbed her singing as they did regularly before with the leads in West Side Story, My Fair Lady, The King and I etc. It would have made for a better film.

    • @raymondmaurer1838
      @raymondmaurer1838 2 роки тому +1

      The dubbing dilemma. Probably would have made for a more enjoyable film but would have been glaringly obvious as "I Love Lucy" had already disclosed her singing prowess or lack thereof.

    Lucille Ball was awful in this film. None of the soft lenses and special lighting could help. I knew the story this film was based on. How come I couldn't figure out the plot. This film turned out to be one big PR stint for Lucy, unfortunately.
