- Lucille Ball spoke with ET in 1984 about the success of ‘I Love Lucy’ and the hit sitcom’s enduring popularity. Out of all the show’s many iconic moments, the legendary actress revealed which episode was ‘the most exciting’ for her. She opened up about her marriage to Desi Arnaz and their eventual divorce in 1960. Ball also praised former co-stars Vivian Vance (famous for playing Ethel Mertz) and William Frowley (known to viewers as Fred Mertz), admitting that she can become emotional watching reruns that stir fond memories. ‘I Love Lucy’ is streaming on Paramount+.

"No, I got more childish and happier!" Now that's living life to the fullest!
😊👍👍💓
Amen!!🙏
I am a Lucy fan because she was a great woman who did it her way despite opposition she was talented
The queen of comedy
1989. Her death. Was so so sad but she lived a very full life an icon a power player she was a name that changed the rules ….in a man’s world
One of my favorite moments of the show is when Desi sings "We're having a baby". I danced to that song Christmas Eve with my husband and went into labor a little while later. 💖
Thats sweet.
I announced my pregnancy to my mom by playing that song over the phone. I love Lucy was such a big part of my childhood, mothers and grandmother who has an uncanny resemblance to Lucille ball.
That moment was very emotional for Lucy herself. You can see the tears.
I have so much respect for Lucille ball she broke barriers in her time 🤠❤
She was the Original. Everyone that came after her walked in her footsteps. And Desi didn't get enough credit for changing the face of television comedies.
I love the episodes where she shows her real dancing and other skills. And they don't clown it up. I love the cuban pete number. No matter what she did it was always perfection and the show is timeless. What a gift she gave us all.
My sweet Lucy. I’ve never felt more at peace in my life than when watching I love Lucy. It transports me to childhood content.
I love seeing her speak so lovingly of the people involved with the show, Vivian, Bill and of course, Desi:)
She’s such a Class Act. She has built childhood memories for all of us. Regardless of age. God bless you Lucy. Thank you for everything
I still remember when she died. I grew up watching I Love Lucy. She was really funny, cool, and pretty. An icon really. So when she died, I was devastated.
Hello Jason
Wonderful sitcom. So funny! ♥️
STILL to this day, THE BEST Sitcom in HISTORY!! It NEVER gets Old and Still Holds Up!!!
Also The Honeymooners, and Andy Griffith show.
@@eloiseockert9233those don’t come even close to lucy.
@JayeAlonzoTopete , actually, the Andy Griffith show came super close.
I don't understand people who actually like I Love Lucy. It sucks.
@@richardgray8593 , morning troll.
I was born in 1956. I have been watching l Love Lucy reruns since l was four years old. I have probably seen every episode at least thirty times and they never get old.
She was one of Hollywoods best Mothers. She raised her children with discipline and most of all, love.
The words of someone intelligent, articulate, thoughtful and humble. You can tell she doesn't feel entitled to her success. She worked hard and the results speak for themselves. This is delightful.
Lucille Ball was a regular part of my summers when I was 11-13 on channel 11 fox in my grandmas tiny trailer home while she was at work on the tiniest television set and I was never without a smile or moment of laughter. Phenomenal woman, comedian, and wickedly intelligent her and Desi both. Thank you Lucy, we love you!
This was the best interview of Lucille Ball on UA-cam. Glad ET finally posted it on their channel.
You betcha it was.
I so agree! I love this interview. She was a smart, gorgeous, talented and driven woman. And an amazing actress and comedienne 🥰 RIP Lucille Ball ❤❤❤
Two years ago I said this was the best interview with Lucille Ball on UA-cam. And I still think it is. I wish that the complete Robin Leach interview with Lucy from start to finish would be posted--not just this edited segment.
Lucy was THE BEST. Will never see another like her! ❤️
Never Ever PERIOD!!!!!
She got me through a lot of tough times. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at a show. Classic.
I still LOVE her,I miss her dearly.
@@jiena____6464 We all miss her. She's making everyone in HEAVEN laugh. She's a laughing ANGEL 😇
Yeah she died from heart surgery😞😞😞😞😞😪😪😪😪
I think about how incredibly difficult it must have been for Lucille Ball to be respected back in a day when women were actively fighting to be recognized for their talent and contributions to this country and world. She not only broke down walls, she set a standard for all male and females, in every aspect of the entertainment business. Her physical comedy, her timing, her delivery, were always all on point. The people around her just made her better and those around her were unbelievable talents too. I saw a Johnny Carson interview with Desi. He was so classy and truthful. He said, I give 90% credit for our success to Lucy. It’s such a shame that they could never find the true happiness in their personal lives that they portrayed on the TV’s across the world. May they all Rest In Peace.
He still sent her flowers every year on their anniversary til he died.
If that's true that's an amazing fact wow
@@phoenixsage29 do you mean what I said?
And racial barriers too, pushing the mixed marriage. 😊
Its 2024 and I still love watching and will forever love “I Love Lucy” what a great show and wonderful cast. My they all RIP❤
It's a refreshing change to hear someone GENUINELY talk of loving everyone they worked with on a successful Show without bad feelings. God Bless Lucy! x
Thank you Lucy❤, Desi❤, Vivian❤ & William❤ for how much you gave & still give us-God Bless you forever
I love her unexpected answers. Quite direct and down-to-earth.
There will NEVER be another Lucy and Desi. Millions who weren't even born, like myself, absolutely LOVE LUCY. She was an extraordinary talent and Desi complimented her perfectly. AND I love Lucy broke the ground for alot of taboo topics as well as real life topics in television.
Lucy was "THE BEST". Nobody will not replace Lucy.
She's absolutely gorgeous!
I love Lucy is such a wonderful classic television show. Lucy was such a beautiful lady 😍💙.
This is the best interview I've seen of Lucy.
God, she is still funny 70 years later. I love Lucy!
Wow! She gets the beauty of having a child like spirit. So many celebrities should learn from her.
Man, I’m so glad that this show lasted and reruns have stayed on so those of us who were not born yet could still watch and love Lucy.
It's because they insisted on using 35 mm movie film that we have the reruns today. No other show back then had reruns. They were all done live. CBS refused to pay for the film saying it was too expensive. Lucy and Desi spent their own money on the film and then the filmed episodes belonged to them. What a genius.
🤣 the chocolate factory one was one of my favorites! Oh what a beautiful memory to have shown, I had forgotten. I love Lucy 💘 💗
Lucille Ball had talent and a gift for comedy. The chocolate factory scene from her show is still my favorite episode from her show. As Desi Arnaz said "Lucy was the show. Viv, Fred and I were props. Damn good props, but props nevertheless."
I really love it, when people get a divorce and reflect with care. She was a class act generous, warm....not hogging the credit. I Love Lucy ❤
and her very last film was extremely touching, important, and the message it gave was really strong.
I just saw a Johnny Carson clip where Desi says he gives 90% of the credit to Lucy and he and the others the remaining 10%. Truly heart warming to know they still looked out for each other. There's also a clip of them in a swimming pool with their grandchild. They may have divorced and gone on to marry others, but they still cared for each other. After all, they were a big big piece of each other's lives. Good to see they remained friends.
Me too
@@lynnmartz8739 Only one lawyer when they divorced and co-parented with full cooperation with each other. They talked several times a week, and Lucy always asked Desi's advice about projects such as doing "Mame,"or issues that came up when she was still in charge of Desilu. Even though both had long term successful marriages Desi sent her flowers every year on their Anniversary. Actually the last time they spoke together, a few days before he died, was on what would have been their 46th Anniversary.
Wow, wonderful interview that I hadn't seen before. Thanks for bringing it to light. I imagine that interviewer must have felt quite a sense of pride that he found a question that she could thoughtfully answer that she hadn't been asked 30 plus years since she became a household name. Wonderful!
This is beautiful makes me love her even more 💟
Me too!
@@mpshields she's my hero
@@peterjohnpagakis4538 As a kid, I use to go to the corner store for candy once a week to eat while watching Here's Lucy. For an extra treat. I got a signed ash tray prop from Lucy when she starred in the movie Mame.
"Pretty Rare" !!!
May God bless her for all eternity. She gave me a lot of laughs when I was young.
Everybody loved Lucy. I read her life story in her book called "Love Lucy". I also read Desi's book, called "A Book" by Desi. Very interesting, talented and smart people. ❤
I agree - Desi put his book out there and went around the country promoting Ä Book. I think that would have been great if Lucy had done the same. However her book did not come out till after she died. Enjoyed both books.
I ready Love Lucy too. I was in middle school and had to do a Women’s History Month project. This was during a time I couldn’t stand reading and I was not able to put that book down. I credit Lucille Ball for helping me re-discover my fondness for reading
This is the FIRST interview I’ve EVER seen where Ms. Ball comes off chill. She always seems uptight, tough, and not fun. Nice to see her saying nice things bout Mr. Arnaz.
Well said. Maybe it’s because the interview was relatively short and they were asking her questions she expected and was comfortable with.
@@jaredjlinden Maybe you’re right. At any rate, it’s refreshing to see an interview of Ms. Ball where she looks content and relaxed.
I agree. Best interview of Lucille Ball I've ever seen.
@@paulsmith2279 Yes, I checked it out. She was very open and gracious in that interview as well.
Totally agree. She was such a serious woman, but here she really seems at ease. I love her.
В детстве жила в в Америке. И каждый день я смотрела этот замечательный сериал. Вспоминаю и плачу. Какая великая женщина!!актриса,человек,красавица!!!! Я люблю Люси как и миллионы людей.
Lucy and ricky are legends! And the show is a classic! I used to watch the reruns as a kid in the 80s. And still watch it sometimes today. The show is still funny and holds up well. Rest in peace. Lucy. And ricky.🙏👍
Ricky’s real name is Desi Arnez. Ricky is his stage name.
And Desi🙏🏼
True story; while I was a manager at a television broadcast network, I made my staff of 9 coordinators in a giant room keep our tv monitors on the morning re-runs of I love Lucy, 2 episodes back to back Mon thru Fri. I did it because with the tough days in a live feed network unit it can get pretty tense. Lucy had a way of helping us all start our day with a laugh, and it helped a great deal. When new hires would come in I'd explain that those tv's had to be on I love Lucy every morning, they thought I was kidding, until existing staff would say, no she's serious. Lucille Ball was a genious, to this day I re watch that show and laugh just as hard as the first time I saw it. ❤
such professionalism, Im glad despite their divorce, Desi and Lucy continued as friends and remains in contact, sometimes things like that work out that way. That is the recipe of a good show, colleagues who greatly respect each other and work hard, as well as love their craft and have a knack for creating good chemistry between themselves and the characters they portray on screen. Also being on time, learning your lines properly and being able to have fun despite how hard the work is, also contributes well to a project of any kind.
I miss you all may God Bless you all in Heaven but never forgotten 🌹⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️♥️♥️♥️🌹🌹💋🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
I wish Aaron Sorkin could have captured this more joyful and upbeat side of Lucy in his movie. She is so delightful here.
She had a few funny moments in the movie.
Movie was awful - think the main actors were not good. Nicole Kidman felt plastic and Javier was not appealing at all either.
I was shocked that the film opened with a sex scene. Hardly our experience of the show.
Gen Z feller here. My mom tried showing me I Love Lucy when I was about 7 years old but I wasn’t really interested. Few years back, we started a TV watching ritual every night and eventually, began incorporating Black and White shows. I pitched The Twilight Zone because it is a classic show and I have some fond memories of seeing a couple of episodes (my 3rd-5th grade teacher showed us a few, hope heaven is nice Mrs. Crockett ❤️) and my mother pitched I Love Lucy. We ended up having it alternate between nights and after a while, I suppose I gree to love Lucy just as much as everyone else. This show’s comedy is timeless and I am so glad my mom exposed me to it. Appreciate your god damn parents more, too!
It’s weird to watch an entire cast that makes you laugh right now and every time you see them with timeless entertainment… but really everybody in that cast is gone.
Absolutely agree. Definitely understand what you mean. Lol. They will forever live through that show. I still watch Lucy and feel their spirit. 💯
Keith Thibodeau (little Ricky) Is the only one left.
Yeah. Good memories on the TV.

When I’m sick or sad or stressed nothing makes me start feeling better than turning on Lucy. ❤
I was born after they all passed and I grew up on this show. My favorite show of all time. Timeless classic that will never ever be forgotten.
Same here. I remember watching this during summer (while I was in elementary school) with siblings in early 2000s. Good times
Such a lovely interview. This is how I’d like to remember Lucy. Not all the problems and the drama, but the nice stuff. I like hearing about her fond memories of making the show. Life isn’t perfect but I’d like to think that for a time she really was happy working with her husband, having a happy family, and being at the top of the world. I’m glad to see her focusing on the positive and fondly remembering the good times. She brought us so much joy and laughter. I can only wish she really was happy and at peace towards the end.
Lucy was in a long term marriage which she was happy in, and had regular contact with Desi till his death. While Gary Morton always seemed blah to me - she was happy with him - the support he gave her and not the drama that was in her first marriage. Also happy that Desi had a loving supportive relationship with his second wife. Don't know much about her, but Lucy said she was lovely and good for Desi; and the Lucie Arnaz also felt very positive about her too. Lucy and Desi gave us so much in I Love Lucy - they were both intelligent, talented people. Thank you to them both for leaving us with laughter.
I love " I love Lucy " best days ever with Lucy and the crew .. Gee's I'm almost 60 and it brings back good ole days and childhood memories I'll die with these memories .
Well? Jimminey Cricketts; Lucy is so clear and so well thought out in her speech .......... and so humble.
There will never be another Lucy♥️
So many favorite "I Love Lucy" episodes, but the one in the shack when the train went by - when I first saw that I thought I was going to break a rib. Vivian Vance killed it. Or the episodes while they were in Hollywood - they were all pure gold. I miss the 50s.
Thank you for the upload. This was a good interview. She talked about some stuff she hasn't talked about before. Including Desi and the marriage. I was surprised that she had 8 or 10 favorite moments or episodes from the show. That's a beautiful thing to know. She really enjoyed her time on there. And she cried cause her two of her co stars had died. She really felt for them. How beautiful.
@James Hama I'm okay

Such a wonderful person you are Lucille Ball even though I grew up in the 1980's as a child I really enjoyed the show because you were always cracking jokes god bless you 🙏 and thanks for a great time in life 😁☮️
Being an ILL fan, and with the new movie Being the Ricardo’s release I’ve been watching Lots of Lucy interviews and this is my favorite one! She seems so relaxed and happy to be talking. I specially loved when he asked her about Desi and said she was very close to him and talked to him 3 times a week, and how highly she talks about him ☺️❤️
I💓LUCY, TOO! I was so happy that Lucie Arnaz was so happy to have Nicole Kidman play her mom. Ms Arnaz said she loved the film and she was so glad they didn't make Nicole look like her mom because she said she wouldn't have liked that at all. I just loved especially when Lucy & Ethel were in scenes together. RIP Lucy & Des and Vivian & William! We love you!💓🌹
He played hard was a nice way of Lucy saying Desi was unfaithful.
@@SuperC888 I think "stars" for the most part back then didn't share all their personal stuff w'/the world like so many celebs do today. I think Ms. Ball understood what "I 💓 Lucy" meant to so many fans and their personal grievances weren't important to share.
I have been an ILL fan since I can remember and I was so excited for Being the Ricardo's... I hated how they made Desi look though. She wouldn't have wanted his legacy to be the worst part about him.
@@Otterice Girl same..same! What a shame they made them both look unsympathetic. Terrible casting and movie overall. I don’t think either of them would be okay with this. It’s a shame their kids agreed to be part of it. 😔
That was a great question and answer about how she actually became more childlike and happy during ILL. In her interview about 8 or so years earlier with Barbara Walters, she spoke about the ILL set as a place she could "pretend" her marriage was actually that happy. It was sad to hear her say that, and you could see why she embraced the happiness that Gary Morton had offered her at a time when she most needed it. By the time of this interview, she had softened her criticism of Desi, but still made the point that his excesses could not be moderated and destroyed their marriage. It's always a pleasure to find"new" interviews like this one, and to know that she and Desi got so close again, especially near the end of their respective lives. Thanks for sharing.
