The frostbite scales pretty well with the primary stat (str or dex), so it's not only viable, but very effective to use cold scaling with any build except pure faith (and possibly arc). Agreed that the series is dope af though, along with all of Chase's content!

Brother Chase, I just wanna say these videos have helped reinvigorate the game for me. So many weapons to try. I hope for a DLC that will carry this game back to the moon.
Here I am the entire time thinking that "counter attacks" on the Spear Talisman meant counter attacking with a shield. So as long as the enemy is in an attacking animation, you get the bonus so long as you're using a thrusting weapon? Sounds like a really strong talisman for PvE then as well?
@@AllantheBob There are a surprising number of moves in pve where you can abuse it, especially against bosses. You don't need to trade with enemies since the pierce vulnerability is both during attacks and during recovery frames after attacks. You can use this to heavily punish bosses that use a long recovery move or a move that you can easily avoid (for example, running up to a dragon as they breath gives you a LOT of time to just go ham on their head). Against vaguely human rank and file enemies it's not that useful since their recovery frames are mostly the same as a players, thus you'd need to trade to reliably hit them since your window to counter attack during recovery is small, but against any monstrous or gargantuan enemy that doesn't fly around like a crack fiend you can really fuck their day up.
I used this as my main weapon along with a brass shield on my first elden ring playthrough. The ranged option on the heavy attack, since it doesn't cost any fp, means you can use it in almost every circumstance, as well as allows the frozen needle to take engagements at a range you wouldn't be able to with almost any other weapon. In addition to its versatility, the frozen needle is a solid boss killer with its speedy moveset and frostbite buildup. My only complaint is that I wish it had a more unique ash of war. I think a modified version of ice spear would have fit it very well.
7:30 “Never use guard counters” - Sun Tzu, _The Art of War_ 8:00 “A player who uses one of the few telegraphed attacks available to them in the game, in pvp, is chad as fuck” - Sun Tzu, _The Art of War_
Didn't use the Ash of War once because the needle toss IS the ash. Still its really strange what FS decides can and can't be infused. Great video man, can't wait to binge the whole series over!
Considering how some ‘unique’ AoWs are really just a mashup of two different AoWs, it wouldn’t have been too crazy to have Frozen Needle have a combination of Impaling Thrust and Ice Spear for its AoW
If im not mistaken you can follow up the feint with an L1 or R1 to go for some mixups. You lunge a little forward ending about a half step ahead from where you initially started. Using it with a heavy thrusting sword can break poise more often than not and in my opinion Be a cool tech option.
yep, and if you unlock the camera, hold the heavy attack and twirl the left stick *slightly* and you can do a really super easy reverse feint backstep and it’s actually insane. It’s crazier on curved swords because the backflip makes it look trippy and hard to read but it’s cool on these too.
Wing of Astel has the same concept as this weapon but better. You can basically play pretty much exclusively with the projectiles as they have better tracking, the charged r2 shoots two which makes it hard to dodge both, and the projectiles are generally wider. Additionally combined the uncharged r2 + projectile does 150 poise damage 1 handed and 160 2 handed, breaking even a full bullgoat in one hit. This means opponents who try and trade your r2 at close range will often lose, even when in hyper armour with a heavy weapon such as a colossal sword. You can also make the r2 projectile very hard to react to by firing it from behind the "Nebula" ash of war. Though it doesn't apply to your weapon showcases, the ash of war also true combos into a Moonveil swap for over 3k damage on most builds i.e. an instant one shot on even a rune arc'd host.
Just a small tip, but the best part of this moveset is something you missed. After the projectile backstep press 1H light attack to move forward and attack, it moves forward almost as much as the impaling thrust, closes the distance extremely well and quickly. Also, backstepping twice after the projectile allows more distance, obviously. But spacing for this weapon is more important than and weapon I have used. This is an in and out weapon that requires some skill, instead you just put on that atrocity, a little dissapointed in this one, but I enjoyed it, cheers. Also impaling thrust allows you to get out of dodge, more spacing. I think if you play it like that you will enjoy the weapon more.
