Colm (the boring great-uncle) may be my favorite character on any television series.

That poor, innocent nun got a heart attack from reading that terrible diary. Never caught that before.

As a British person, a lot of us have been fed the Africa narrative. There adverts on TV all the time about the starving kids in Africa. At school, we had fundraising things etc.

I enjoyed wearing my school uniforms, as I recall. I liked not having to think about what to wear and just putting the same things on. It was practical and helped me feel less out of place. I never bought into the authoritarian rubbish about it - order, discipline, tidyness and all that about it. But it was warm and functional and fine by me. And we all learned how to tie a tie properly, which according to TV shows, Americans have difficulty with, as well as how to eat like grown-ups with a knife and fork.
The back row on the lower deck of the bus was exclusively reserved for the older and cooler schoolkids. It was a big deal to get the back seat by the window behind the right rear wheel if you could, depending on where you were in the bus queue and if you were daring enough to grab it. I still go for that seat now when I have to take a bus somewhere.

Just for some context, Derry is in the north of Ireland/the 6 counties or 'northern Ireland', the 6 counties of Ireland still under British rule.
Generally speaking Catholics are Irish and want Ireland to be reunited, protestants are British (mostly moved here from Britain under the plantations or migrated for work etc) and want to remain under British rule.
This series is set in the mid to late 90's when the war was coming to an end and is a big part of the story in the background which features more poignantly in some episodes.
As a Catholic born and raised there, we were almost used to the British army harassing and threatening us, the corrupt police, the bombs by this stage (which is reflected in the blasé attitude in this show), but we'd not given up our fight for equality and a better life for the next generation which we are now seeing come to fruition.
It's genuinely a great show that really captures that time through the eyes of teenagers, their innocence, the hope for the future and the great Irish sense of humour.

Thank you that's really interesting. I already knew about it being in Ireland and about the catholic thing but it is good to know about the British soldier thing, that's crazy thanks👍

It's easy to google Derry and find out that that it's an Irish town and all the girls are Irish.

I love this show, so funny! The more times you watch it you'll notice even more funny things you missed on the first watch. I love them all but Sister Michael and Orla are my faves. Watch Orla even in the background.

Oooh, looking forward to seeing more of your reactions to this show! I think the sense of humor in Derry Girls has some overlap with that of OFMD-- Saoirse-Monica Jackson and Rhys Darby both have incredibly mobile faces, and similar willingness to be ridiculous. And I love that the characters are not at all idealized and yet we cheer for them anyway.

Trocaire is a big thing in catholic schools because there are so many catholic missionaries in North Africa, we’d always have at least one Trocaire fundraiser per year.
