    James is at the girls school becase he is English (or at least is percived to be English) and they feared for his safety if he went to the boys school.

      He is English. I don't think they could have made that any clearer.

      @@thegrandmuftiofwakanda Actually, he's ethnically just as Irish as the rest of them. According to Michelle, James' mom Kathy got pregnant in Derry, then traveled to London to get an abortion. She never got the abortion and raised James in England until dropping him off in Derry. So ethnically, he's Irish. He just has an English accent.

    I love this series - probably because it's really about the triumph of friendship over adversity. It takes a while to tune into the Derry accent, but the programme captures the spirit of those troubled times while managing to be funny, hopeful, dark, satirical and witty, all the same time. I think the characters will live on in our minds for many years to come.

    Derry, (Catholic), Londonderry, (protestant), is the same town but divided by religion. Catholics want for a united Ireland, while the protestants want to remain British. Tensions still exist, but not to the extent of the fighting, (the 'troubles'), that took place leading to the Good Friday Agreement, signed in 1998. Derry Girls is set during the 90's leading up to that GFA. It's 3 seasons, plus a one hour special to finalise it. The special features a cameo appearance by a very well known American. It's a superbly written show, extremely funny, and touching at times. About 4 girls and a boy going through teenage hood, their growing pains, and leading them to adulthood. It gives a real insight into the mindset and particular humour of the good people of Northern Ireland. The soundtrack is brilliant, and anyone watching who was of a similar age during that time will immediately relate. If you can get to watch it Tysheen, I highly recommend it.

    My first British or Irish comedy was 1961 so over 60 years ago and this was one of the best I have seen but,surely, impossible,for you to see these clips because nearly every one of them is in context and you would have to know a little of the kid's backstory and that era in Northern Ireland's story, as well to fully appreciate the endless jokes:)

    The boy is English and in certain parts of Ireland at this time, that wasn't good ! So he was Safe in the girls school. The boys would have kicked the Shxt out of him. Cheer's 🇬🇧 edit: and yes they keep saying he's gay..which doesn't help.

    It's nowhere near as hot as here. It reached 33°C (91.4°F) in Bradford, West Yorkshire, and was that hot for most of the day, yet we're nearly always cooler in the North compared to Southern England.
    However at least it's not that humid like it was around 10-12 days ago.

      33 Degrees ? 91.4 ? You're not even trying (or frying). TODAY we have just broken The UK Temperature Charts since records began in 1794 so the record has gone after 128 years this very day in The Beautiful South:)

    Not afraid of dead people but I regret going to the hospital to see dad after he past away. Now my last memory of him is a very skinny pale body. When mum past away I refused to see her. My last memory of her is 2 weeks before when we was celebrating her 90th birthday and that's a much better memory.

    It's a *British show,* commissioned by a *British TV network,* produced by a *British production company,* broadcast by a *British TV channel,* and set in the *British country of Northern Ireland.*
    It's also set in the 1990s during the later stages of *The Troubles,* which was started because a minority of *Northern Irish* and *Irish* people refused and still refuse to accept the fact that *most of Northern Ireland want to remain part of the UK, and therefore remain British!*

    • @KernowWarrior
      @KernowWarrior 2 роки тому +11

      Actually "The Troubles began during a campaign by the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association to end discrimination against the Catholic/nationalist minority by the Protestant/unionist government and local authorities. It wasn't how you describe "they refused to accept British rule" The refused to accept being discriminated against and being treated as second class citizens. What really kicked off the Troubles was the British sending in the army to quell a peaceful human rights protest during which they shot 26 unarmed protesters killing 14. and the rest is history so they say!

      Please take a Xanax. And it's not British, because it's not on the Isle of Britain. The only British countries are England, Scotland and Wales because they're the only countries on that island. Northern Ireland is part of the island of Ireland.
