R.I.P. Henri Toivonen and Sergio Cresto.
Toivonen and Cresto deaths and the accident a few weeks later in the Portugal Rally ( crowd )dictates the end of group B.
@@RuiLOKueSeDiz Henry & Sergio dead in Corsica Rally, (where they are largely in the lead). The Portugal event was early in the season (third event of the championship after Montecarlo & Sweden). The accident was caused by a local driver (Joaquim Santos, on a Ford RS200). The crazy condition (with the crowd waiting the cars in the middle of the race course), convinced the drivers to retire from the race.
RIP Henri e Sergione
Group B was bonkers. The RS200 crash in Rally Portugal (3 dead 33 injured) and after a month, Henri Toivonen in Corsica brought this class to an end.
But that Fiat...driven by Walter Rohl in Rally Portugal, 7 March 1980, Arganil stage (42km). Before he went to sleep the night before, he memorized the hole stage, every corner and bump. When morning came (and it was his birthday), the stage was covered in fog, no more than 5m of visibility. When the stage started, his co-driver started to tell the pace notes, but he didn't had any visual markers. So he decided to count the seconds (3,2,1...) when he heard "corner 60m"... end result, 35m15s for the stage and 3m48s lead! Just awesome. I think there is a documentary about it (in German).
One of my kid memories is watching a skinny rally driver eating pasta from a fog lamp cap. He was doing some testing with Subaru. I thought rally drivers came from a different planet and watching that just brought me closer to the sport. Richard Burns was his name.
Walter Röhrl is his name and if you wanna see what he could (and still can) do, watch him behind the wheel of a group B Audi Sport Quattro S1 (pay attention to his pedal work): ua-cam.com/video/wqREtbLe4sY/v-deo.html
Walter Röhrl has a photographic memory - that is what sets him apart.
On the mentioned Rally they also pulled the fuse of the tail lights so nobody could keep up with them in the fog...
Jonathan Bowen group a was not faster than group b
A Subaru Impreza isn’t as fast as an Audi Quattro S1
@@bobsmith4099 it depends on what you consider faster; sheer power and top speed, or overall speed. The Gr.A cars where faster around a stage then the Gr.B cars, but they didn't have the brutality or power of the Gr.B monsters
Yes indeed. Other racers go to rally drivers for tips and tricks. Especially pedal work..
"Money don't makes you happy"
500.000$ Delta S4: "Hold my Martini"
@kuro neko
You said that just because it's about a car. The "funny" thing that you could say that sentence about your spouse, your children, your dream-house, your dream-job etc. as well.
The funny part of this joke is referred to the Martini as these cars used to be in Martini livery
I think my favourite figure for the S4 is that Lancia claimed it would do 0-60 in 2.8 seconds...on gravel.
Or the monday after the spanish gp testing Henri T's lap would have qualified 4th for the f1 race.
@@colinmunro7337 You think " Estoril was no stranger to rallying as it was commonly used as a test venue for World Championship teams to test their tarmac setup for the roads around Sintra and even served as a regroup area for the Rally. As was commonly done at all tests the engineers would record the times of the car through the day in order to track progress. With Henri Toivonen on hand to put the car through its paces and being able to use full boost (2.2 Bar on the S4 to produce in access of 560bhp) something that could be rarely done due to the size of the stages in a Rally. Toivonen’s time was good enough to put him in the top ten of the times set by the F1 cars at a test earlier in the year."
That's because after the first 0.5 secs of wheel spin the tyres started to grip on the bedrock ;-)
colin munro it was in Estoril Racetrack where the Portuguese Grand Prix and also one of the stages ( the rally slalom) of the Rally of Portugal took place. Portugal not Spain...

Doug Demuro reviews a Lancia Delta. Jay: hold my denim
Demuro can be annoying. I will watch some of his videos if the vehicle is interesting - I will watch Jay's videos because they are always interesting, and Jay covers 2 and 4 wheels, gas, electric, steam , whatever power makes it move
Doug's gotten so damn boring. He completely stopped doing interesting things. I never used to fast forward his videos but I've started lately.
The man, who is talking more than Jay. That an achievment.
Jp nice man with one mistake
5:14They didn't get from this (Fiat 131 Abarth ) to that (Lancia) in 5 years !!??
He somehow forgot Lancia Stratos and Lancia 037 and Lancia 037 is real precessor of Delta S4 NOT Fiat 131 Abarth
@@altergreenhorn The real antecessor is actually the trevi bimotore
I remember my brother and I discovering "Gruppe B" as teenagers. Fascinated by the sounds and the violence of the cars. Unheard of for 2 black kids that came from a drag racing family. It, not only introduced us to WRC, but road racing and time attack, as well. Most importantly, it opened our young eyes to something other than Muscle Cars.
In 1985, when Lancia engineers tested an S4 engine (Abarth 233 ATR 18S) under extreme conditions, it developed around 1,014 PS (746 kW; 1,000 hp) at 5 bars of boost pressure.
i thought that it happen a couple of years later, and it was a 2.0L engine?i can´t remenber ,regards
Yeah, it's a 1.8/2.0L 4-cyl engine. And that's the caveat to the 'hold my beer' sentiments: the few restrictions in the Grp B rules, and a run of transmission failures (i.e utterly grenaded) blunted the power output. They had to rein it in a bit.
Had Grp B's successor Grp S, gone ahead, Lancia had a completely reworked Delta S4 in the mill that employed Ferrari F1 tech. Minimum 760bhp iirc.
@@creepingjesus5106 my father was working in FIAT Lancia group and retired in 1994. He was involved in development of the engines since FIAT lancia used the same facilities (engines dev and test labs). They were testing ECV2 engine and pushed some of them far beyond S4. He told me that they were aiming at 1500HP for race use (the level was nearing 1HP x cm3 similarly to F1 of that era). He was disappointed because such powers would have rendered the car extremely dangerous if not uncontrollable.
@@xiter8868 ECV 2, that was it! I read quite an extensive write up on it (and what was to replace the Metro 6R4, that kinda became the MG EXE concept car) maybe a year or two after Grp S was definitely not going to happen. Some of the technical insights from both, were fascinating. I'd have loved to have been in those labs and workshops! You'll know the Fiat Group end of things better, but on the MG end, there were things like the 'axial' turbo that ABB were developing (think of it more like an air raid siren in form), and some very trick 4wd with Gartrac.
Of course not all of this went in the bin, quite a lot of it 'trickled sideways' to rallycross teams with deep pockets, and the notorious Audi 90 IMSA cars benefited too. We can still speculate and dream though!
(Thinking about it, didn't Davide Cironi get a drive of the museum's ECV 2 a few years back? That would be a real treat.)

Elon Musk, 2016: "Tesla does 0-60 mph in 2.7 seconds in the rain"
Eng. Limone, Eng. Lombardi, Lancia, 1985: "Hold my spaghetto" 😁
Small Italian hybrid engine

Displacement 1600cc
Maximum turns 15000
Single Turbo Turbocharger
90 ° V6 configuration
Bore 80 mm
Travel 53 mm
4 valves per cylinder
Direct Injection, max 500 bar
Performance is record-breaking, with a click on 0-100 km / h in 2.5 seconds, 0-200 km / h in 6.7 seconds. This thanks to the hybrid engine that does nothing but increase the torque in favor of performance. The maximum speed is 340 km / h
And in the process, it will probably catch on fire as well.
Group B was all about brute power and noise.
The Tesla is none of those, and above, all their totally silent.
How boring.
There was some unofficial rumours that Delta S4 once managed to get 0-60 mph (0-100 km/h) in 1.8 or 1.9 sec on dry tarmac. Could be that it was in the latter part of WRC 1986 season, when the car had something like 700 bhp. Which would make it the fastest accelerating car on the world, by far.
Alitalia livery was always one of my favourites, esp when on a stratos.
Wow, a real Delta S4, in the states, on the street?! This is the coolest episode Jay's ever done. I'd have liked to have seen the Fiat run, too (or at least heard it), but yeah... You have no choice but to drive the wildest rally car in rally history when you get the chance. Amazing. Good on that guy for keeping these cars alive and well!
That S4 is just bonkers. It sounds like a freakin jet engine.
The engine in the Lancia Delta S4 is twin charged. It has a turbo and a supercharger which results in insane power and reduced turbo lag.

Both S4 and 131 in one episode?? What a treat for my eyes and ears!
American : There's no replacement for displacement.
Italian : Hold my macaroni.
Zerofightervi I love how the most Italian thing you could think of was macaroni!
It WOULD have more power if it was a 2.0L or a 2.2L so there is no replacement for displacement.
Zerofightervi That’s my point: if those F1 engines made around 1500bhp in qualifying trim, imagine if they were allowed a 2 liter displacement. They would certainly make more power than the 1.5’s. So there IS no replacement for displacement.
The Fiat 131 Abarth's engine is a 16 valve, so four valves per cylinder. Also, there's not five years between these, the car might have been used in 78 but the 131 project goes back to 74. In between these two, there was still the Lancia 037. Another fun fact... the S4 is basically a tubular chassis monster with a fibreglass body that looks roughly like a Delta. It was so fast that Toivonen once lapped the Estoril circuit in Portugal (from a standing start!) fast enough to get himself halfway on that year's Formula 1 GP grid.
I think twincam but only 2valves per cylinder. In the states they’d call it hemi (hemispheric combustion chamber).

Also don't think they mentioned that the delta was the most successful 'platform' in rally history
The Lancia 037 was the rawest of all, but wow, to see those two classic icons was amazing, thank you. The ultimate in proving you don't need huge engines to make awesome power. The lightweight construction, agility, handling, and sheer ferocity is something that will never be seen again.

Rip John. A great story about the Stratos in Ireland in 78. Reminds me of my father telling me the first time he saw an RS1800 in the UK. Roger Clark on the Wyedean rally Iirc and the first time the MK2 was rallied as a works car. He came into sight into 90 left absolutely on it and sideways. Queue a life long obsession for my father.
The best rally car of all time, nothing short of legendary.
The Integrale was breaking Group B stage times by the early 90's. A current WRCar (or even R5), would destroy a period specification Group B car on stage.
Perhaps in a drag race, but these are rally cars we are discussing, not drag cars.
On the stages it didn't take long for subsequent cars to go faster, and the latest batch of WRCars are absolutely incredible to watch.
The Group B cars were/are awesome, but a lot of rally fans don't give enough appreciation to the generations that followed.
I'd like to see that Delta S4/Focus rallycross drag race run again with a competitive rallycross car as well: Marklund motorsport were clocking sub-2 second 0-60 times a few years ago, would love to see one of the Works Supercars do a similar race against an S4!
I grew up enjoying Road & Track covering all the exciting rally races in Europe and it just seemed like a different world. So neat to see these cars and hear the stories.
Watched this then immediately gone on the search for group b. I’ve pretty much seen everything out there and even saw them in the flesh back in the day but it was an amazing period in motorsport history that will never be boring and we’ll never see the likes of it again.
