In Germany we also use "kaputt" to say we're exhausted. "Ich bin kaputt" = I'm done, I'm exhausted, I'm broken same thing, it depends on the situation and mimic of the person using that phrase

So gut wie jede Sprache hat etliche Lehnwörter die aus dem Kontext der Historie übernommen, ersetzt oder abgeändert wurden... die englische Sprache ohne Lehnwörter aus dem lateinischen oder franzoschischem ist dem germanischen entstanden... Du musst dir mal j.r.r, Tolkien im Original anschauen. Er hat weitestgehend versucht Lehnwörter zu vermeiden und durch englischstammige eher ungebräuchliche Synonyme ersetzt ;)

Yes and if you go back and listen again, you will hear that I said “schleppen” when I translated the word from German. The inference from context is that we’ve simply cut off they ending for our use of the word.

I'm 26 from Southern California. I NEVER use any of those words as an American, and I've never even heard of Schlepp or Nix. I only hear of Blitz when used in the word Blitzkrieg during a history lesson, but we know what it means if you use it. Usually as "Blitzed."

A few notes to this video: Germans never use the word "Schlepp" as a noun (which Americans do actually and it's very interesting). We use it only as a verb and to be honest I don't think the word "Schlepp" exists. It could be the word "Schlapp" (tired) but again this isn't used as a noun either but as an adjective. Blitz is not only used in military context but also in weather forecast when it's thunder and lightning (Blitz und Donner) and that's the original meaning. It was adapted to war and not the other way around. I have never ever heard the word "Flak" in my entire life and I've been living in Germany for 27 years now. Dunno if it's slang but even the written word "Flugabwehrkanone" isn't a word I use in daily conversation... Oh and by the way, the pronunciation of "Über" is also different because of the "ü". And that's very important in the German language.

Not exclusive Spiel is also used as compound in Lichtfestspiele, Volkfestspiele, Freiluftspiele, etc. The Word Spiel and Spiele describes way more in German then just the act to casual play so yes Americans do make proper use of the word spiel.

Thaler is indeed the root word but the word "dollar" entered American English via the Dutch "daalder" which at the time was a common coin in Europe. A daalder was 1,50 guilders. It didn't exist anymore in the 20th century but the rijksdaalder which was 2,50 guilders still did.

So gut wie jede Sprache hat etliche Lehnwörter die aus dem Kontext der Historie übernommen, ersetzt oder abgeändert wurden... die englische Sprache ohne Lehnwörter aus dem lateinischen oder franzoschischem ist dem germanischen entstanden...
Du musst dir mal j.r.r, Tolkien im Original anschauen. Er hat weitestgehend versucht Lehnwörter zu vermeiden und durch englischstammige eher ungebräuchliche Synonyme ersetzt ;)

Yes and if you go back and listen again, you will hear that I said “schleppen” when I translated the word from German. The inference from context is that we’ve simply cut off they ending for our use of the word.

@@King-cf7cz Das zählt jedoch nicht, weil wir uns auf die Grundform "schleppen" bezogen haben. Natürlich ändert sich die Deklination des Verbs abhängig von der ersten, zweiten, dritten Person und vom Singular bzw. Plural.

I'm 26 from Southern California. I NEVER use any of those words as an American, and I've never even heard of Schlepp or Nix. I only hear of Blitz when used in the word Blitzkrieg during a history lesson, but we know what it means if you use it. Usually as "Blitzed."
I'm from New Mexico, and I've heard nearly all of these used with the exception of Schlepp... I have literally never heard an American use it.

I've never heard anybody using "Flak" to describe criticism (in German), that's just an english language usage.

So being under hard FLAK means the germans fired a lot of grenades (Unter heftigem FLAK-Beschuss sein).

A few notes to this video: Germans never use the word "Schlepp" as a noun (which Americans do actually and it's very interesting). We use it only as a verb and to be honest I don't think the word "Schlepp" exists. It could be the word "Schlapp" (tired) but again this isn't used as a noun either but as an adjective.
Blitz is not only used in military context but also in weather forecast when it's thunder and lightning (Blitz und Donner) and that's the original meaning. It was adapted to war and not the other way around.
I have never ever heard the word "Flak" in my entire life and I've been living in Germany for 27 years now. Dunno if it's slang but even the written word "Flugabwehrkanone" isn't a word I use in daily conversation...
Oh and by the way, the pronunciation of "Über" is also different because of the "ü". And that's very important in the German language.

Not exclusive Spiel is also used as compound in Lichtfestspiele, Volkfestspiele, Freiluftspiele, etc.
The Word Spiel and Spiele describes way more in German then just the act to casual play so yes Americans do make proper use of the word spiel.

Dollar is an english version of the german word Daler/Thaler. From the mine at Joachimsthal.
Thaler is indeed the root word but the word "dollar" entered American English via the Dutch "daalder" which at the time was a common coin in Europe. A daalder was 1,50 guilders. It didn't exist anymore in the 20th century but the rijksdaalder which was 2,50 guilders still did.
