The devil can be very tricky. Even if we are the kind of Catholic who prays the rosary every day, receives on the tongue, and confesses our sins regularly, Satan can tempt us to be proud of that as though we are better than other Catholics.

Idolatry or "idol worship" can be ANYTHING that replaces God!
It could be drugs, constantly viewing pornography, gossip, love of money, putting too much time on your cellphone, workaholic, habitual lying, adultery, egoism, "bible worship", compulsive gambling, smoking cigarettes...
You then become a slave to that "idol" whether you realize it or not!

Who does that? Ask any trad about the liturgy, and they will say the NO has problems that fail to bring closer to God, not that the liturgy is the end in itself. This is such a strawman by this dishonest friar.
As a matter of fact, go ask liberal catholics if racial or social justice takes precedence over the first commandment, and then you'll have a real life example of idolatry. But of course you won't hear that from Casey.

The triggering over what one person believes when it comes to worshiping the almighty lord that is our god amazes me. I worship the Father the Son and Holy Spirit. The fact that someone gets looney tunes on what one thinks is truly pathetic. The internet has proven that people act like 5 yr olds, and refuse to hear other people out.

@@daddada2984 The Catholic Church has a saying LEX ORANDI LEX CREDENDI the way we worship shows what we believe. therefore many of the wreckovations of our churches indicated there was a change in belief. Destroying altars and putting tables in their place indicates a disbelief in the Mass as a sacrifice. Stripping the church of all icons and images is the heresy of iconoclasm. There are an abundant number of traditional and conservative books that explain these matters. Having clown masses, loony liturgies, polka masses etc. destroys the sanctity of the liturgy. The Eastern Orthodox are quite commendable. The liturgy, sacrifices, priesthood and structure of the worship in the old testament prefigured not only Christ but also the divine liturgy of the Church.

@@BreakingInTheHabit “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall not have other gods beside me. You shall not make for yourself an idol or a likeness *of anything* in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth; you shall not bow down before them or serve them” (Deuteronomy 5:6-9).
*Of anything*, there are no ( excepts here, none )
Below is an answer from a priest, (quite humorous actually)
A similar passage to this can be found in Leviticus. In many other places in the Old Testament, the Lord chides Israel for bowing down or kneeling before idols in order to worship them.
The posture of bowing can be used in at least two different ways. Bowing can be used as an expression of greeting, as in places like Japan. *( but we are not in Japan are we)* Like the handshake, it also signifies friendship and respect. In contrast to this practice, when one bows to God, one offers worship to Him. When a Catholic bows to a statue, he or she is expressing friendship and respect with the person the image depicted *( Oh OK )* and not worshiping it as one might bow toward the Blessed Sacrament.
“For this reason I kneel before the Father” (Ephesians 3:14). Here, St. Paul depicts the only one who we should kneel before in worship: the Father. Yet kneeling is also used as a posture of deep prayer. Many times in Scripture, Jesus kneels in prayer. We imitate this practice by kneeling in prayer as well.
When we do so, however, we may kneel with a rosary, with a prayer book or with a Bible. These items we use help us to pray better by focusing our prayer.
Similarly, Catholics kneel before images to help focus their minds and hearts on God as they are praying. *( if you say so )*
Some people have the custom of reverencing, or kissing, a statue. This sign of reverence is ultimately a sign of emotion and reverence that the person is directing toward God. *( oh, right )* It may also be a sign of friendship when one reverences a statue of a saint.

⚠️Why this religion will lead you to HELL. ⚠️
The whole basis of the damnable Catholic teaching on asking Mary to pray for us is that she is very precious to God. No one has special privileges with God. Catholics believe that Jesus was some mamas boy. Whatever Mary wants , Mary gets. Its honestly disgusting , even lutherans as well with catholics believe that God could not come to earth incarnate without obtaining Mary's permission first. That is complete BLASPHMEY!
It is honestly interesting that the "blessed virgin" of Catholicism is also call the "Queen of Heaven" by the Catholic Church itself ? Jesus said , "Ye worship ye know not what..." (John 4:22). Catholics have no clue or idea who they are worshipping, they claim to worship "God" , while idolizing Mary in every shape and form. Mary is literally praised over 2,226 words in the rosary and how many times do y'all do the rosary? Thats straight BLASPHEMY ! God clearly said "He would NOT share his glory with another...." Isaiah 42:8
Catholic priest are spiritual frauds, all of them. It is so gross their theological negligence for both Lutheran minister and Catholic priest to claim the power to absolve someone else's sins. They can't even forgive their own sins. Religion wants to keep us in a box, but the Lord wants us to open our eyes. Satan uses religion , the lies from all around the world to blind people from the glorious gospel ( 2 Cor 4:3-4).
I truly pray that you won't continue to be one of satans victims, I pray that nobody will truly. I don't write these things, I do not go out and street evangelize these things to be hateful or unkind, God knows that. I have no hatred in my heart, God knows. Life is just too short to live with hatred. However, I hate evil, which is what we are commanded to do as a Christian, (Psalms 97:10), "Ye that love the LORD, hate evil; : he preserverth the souls of his saint; he delivered them out of the hand of the wicked."
May God bless you and open yours and everyone else's eyes to the truth, Amen.

@KM Márquez Except when he's jealous and vengeful? ... ordering babies dashed against rocks or has whole communities destroyed along with their cattle? Orders females to be taken forcefully as the conquests of war? floods planets to drown every man, woman and animal within...
      ... tolerates, even encourages, slavery?
How about when he engineers the eternal torture and damnation of Pharoah? A man who he first sent word to, purportedly to save him, but then hardens his heart and binds/deafens him to the word to ensure he reject the word once given... and thus, engineers both aspects of his damnation.
And, if just one man is thrown to the pit... is God not responsible for infinite pain and suffering ?
How about this planet itself, with all things preying on all others. If you could feel the pain inflicted on this planet... the sheer agony felt in nature, in every instant, you'd not call this creation glorious. Everything eats everything else, alive! ... it's a barbaric machinery. A perpetuum of agony.
But, it'll all be fine in heaven, right?
How about when he declares that the screams of anguish and the stench of charred flesh emanating from the pit are "among the delights of heaven"? To be enjoyed by the faithful as they prostrate themselves at His feet for all eternity? Really?
      Sounds like Satan to me.
Doesn't God repent in the bible? repeatedly? Before finally announcing that he's tired of repenting? Want to know about the capability of God to forgive... check out revelation. Check out the lake of fire. He could snap his fingers and all the bad people could painlessly cease to exist... but no, there must be vengeance. There must be pain beyond enduring.
Humans almost entirely agree that a bad dog should be put to sleep as painlessly as possible, even if it has killed a relative. We do not inflict endless suffering upon it... and it's puppies... and it's puppies puppies... for all eternity. We do not wish to burn off it's skin perpetually in order to cause infinite agony.
No, this is Gods love. The love of a blood drenched psychopath!
... oh yes, God doesn't think as I do. That's for sure.
Wonder how I dare sit in judgement of the O.T. God? Easy... Apparently I have the knowledge of Good and Evil seared into my heart. I know right from wrong ... this is my supposed flaw and also my qualification. My heart is a barometer, and it wholly condemns the actions of the God of the O.T. as vile and despicable.

The truth is : YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE MIND OF GOD ... And pretending that you do, pretending that you know better than others, is one of the very sins your bible warns you about. No?

As you said, we can idol only man made, so the Liturgy can't be an idol. It's true that when a priest make a mistake (or liturgical abuse) during Mass, we should concentrate on the Holy Sacrifice itself. But the abuses are actually sometimes hiding for a lot of people from what's really happening. I'm not one who ask to "which mass" are you going; but i know that abuses can lead someone to leave the Church because they forgot what was really happening at the Mass, they no longer saw the sacrifice because of the abuses.
I think Liturgy, in the Roman rite can be beautiful in both of its forms. But the phenomenon that we encounter the most in our Church is lack of interest in the Mass and in the Liturgy, not the contrary.
For the interested see Bishop Barron's video named "Bishop Barron on Why Being Good Is Not Enough", in which he is telling why Liturgy is so important. And thus, as Christians, we should be taking care of it, not destroying it by our 'creative' ideas that have nothing to do with Mass. The Liturgy is God's work through his Church, liturgical abuses often reveal either the selfishness of those who prepare the Liturgy and who think they know better than the Church or the lack of interest in the Liturgy.

I do agree with this position. Indeed care for the Liturgy can slip into love for aesthetics\forms and the like which is wrong; but at its core is, I think, that sensitivity to want to offer the best to God and to follow what the Church has handed down, laid out, on how to celebrate properly and simply. I don’t think cringing or being upset because of a -at least outwardly- sloppily celebrated liturgy is idolatry, rather a desire for things to be done better as we know they can and should. This from then becoming aggressive, rude and divisive is, of course, a very different story.

Only the elect recognize the Saving Sacrifice, through the Holy Spirit, which lies not in some magical words or historical aesthetics, neither ideological politics, but in the loving laying down of one's life for one's enemies. The real meaning of piety is Filiation, which means having the same feelings of Jesus, that is, of The Father, who suffers the vanity of His sons in order not to lose them forever.
"Understand the meaning of these words: I desire Mercy, not sacrifice."
Traditionalist motto is precisely the opposite: (Been there, daily TLM for three years)
      "I want Sacrifice, not Mercy"
I thank God that the Sacred Keys are not in the hands of those who believe in the sacrifice of goats, as claiming for the blood of sinners, instead of The Free Offering of the Lamb, the Only Capable of Cleansing us.
Anyway read the Gospel of today.

I couldn't have said it better, Tom. Your message is very well written, and I especially like to see your reference to Bishop Barron's recent video, which was educational and inspirational in addressing the situation. I especially agree with you on how abuses in the liturgy "often reveal either the selfishness of those who prepare the Liturgy and who think they know better than the Church or the lack of interest in the Liturgy." I find this to be a serious and common fault among the lay ministers who I've witnessed strip power from the pastors themselves. God bless your devotion!
And for the record, I attend holy mass in the Extraordinary Form (sung high mass) on Sundays, and the Ordinary Form every day of the week. Therefore, I don't hold one form of the liturgy in absolute higher esteem over the other. But honestly, the parish I attend, run by the Norbertines, celebrates the ordinary form with utmost reverence. The organ is the only choral instrument, and Gregorian Chant still has its place in the liturgy. I imagine this is how V2 intended the reform of the mass, because there is no doubt that liturgical abuses exist as a bad implementation of V2 (Yes, I've read the documents).

@@deussacracommunioest2108 In Matthew 9:13 when Jesus speaks of mercy here he is speaking of having mercy on the sinners and tax collectors. These are the people that the Pharisees considered unclean and untouchable because of the Mosaic Law. The sacrifice Jesus does not want is when the Mosaic Law gets in the way of a person reaching out to the sick or the poor with divine mercy.
That being said, I know no person who lets their love of the Extraordinary Form (Except maybe the SSPX, which aren't in communion, so they don't count) stop them from reaching out to people in need.
Twitter is not an accurate interpretation of those who go to the TLM. If you go to a Latin Mass, people will be glad to see you and are very helpful. I go to an Ordinary Form Parish, and I have to say when I go away to a Latin Mass Parish, they love me coming and are willing to show me what to do. They don't worship the Liturgy (At least not of what I know of).
The Ordinary Form and Extraordinary Form are from the same Rite. They are just different. I pray that the Vatican can find a Liturgy Form that all Catholics will be called to practice. Until then, we are allowed to Practice our preferred Forms.

I refuse to call it anything other than "old rite". Even those in supposed communion with the Church hardly even commemorate the Saints with Her, they use their own calendar. We may as well call them "old calendarists". Also their priests demand an obedience from their folk that they themselves don't pay to their Bishops, by ignoring the Holy Spirit of the Council and the Legitimate Pastors and Saints from the Church. They believe they are the hermetic criteria of orthodoxy just like a gnostic sect. Everything points out to what is written "They don't find Salvation and keep others from finding it". For Salvation is in Mercy.
As "Roman Orthodox" can be misleading since they are not so "ex-cathedra", I stay with "old rite calendarists" as the most euphemic.
~Fam, tbh~, I have been very inside the movement, don't come to me with "it's just a rite". Everyone knows it's an entire jansenist ideological conspiracy. They are all for the constant blood shed, promoting the beauty of death penalty and pride of violent war and a terrorist society of the strong, here understood as cruel. In fact, they are also like the jihadists. All their hatred and violence is identical to the jews who got scandalized with the Cross. They want to crucify everyone, even The Pope, just in order to fool themselves that they don't need to enter the mystery of the Passion to follow Jesus Christ.
Yes we do hate those old people who sing their weakness and incontinence to our sacred ears; we do hate the poor who are so lazy, ignorant and brute, who behave like beasts and know not how to behave properly.
But God loves them, and He loves them deeply. In fact, He Raises from His Throne and inclines His Ears to hear their cries. The Lord of Heavens tears His Son's Body outraged.
Who are these who take His Holy Name in vain? Against the foreigner, the orphan and the widow?
The Lord Has already begun His Justice, to those who seek not Mercy but Justice. He destroys the proud with lust, and the impious offspring with a sevenfold impiety, because they seek not Mercy.
The feminists and the communists will precede them, for when the time come they may seek Mercy from their many wounds. But those who are justified in their own eyes seek not God, as those who sacrifice their neighboor.
I say this because as I have defended impiety and persecuted Christ, I am now called to defend His Holy Name and His Holy Church, in His Holy See.

Thanks for this reflection. I hadn't thought of these forms of idolatry; I wondered if I have ever made this mistake. I have also noticed that (at least in Italy, where I live) there are often forms of idolatry towards the saints. I premise: I love the saints, (I was at the beatification of Carlo Acutis, I love St. Francis and many other saints, I also pray novenas etc.) but I happened to attend the feast of some patron saint and I realized that it was very close to falling into idolatry. I know that this is not always the case, that our Church does not teach this. It can happen even to the most bona fide people to place so much trust in the saints, and to love them so much, that one comes close to idolatry. I would love it if you made a video on this topic! Thanks again for everything you do, you are very good at making things understood!

I think most of people fear of what's going on in our Church and this hasn't to do with traditionalism/idolatry (even if I clearly understand your point and I do agree with lot of your ideas). We see more and more bad things and world's tendancies/revendications in the Church (e.g. LGBTQ+ ideas, relativism, willingness to validate homosexual mariage, big decrease of evangelisation). I'm 32, a French converted Catholic for 3 years and I am not against Pope Francis, but I do not understand some of his positions/declarations... I think, he is dividing the Church...
Finally, I trully think Vatican 2 was a good council, but the "boomers", all people from the 68's have desacrilisied lot of things and have damaged our Church with their way of thinking and acting in the Church (both laics and religious). They are not following Vatican 2 texts and rules... And they want to continue to change everything even if their way of thinking is not working at all, I mean in term of people attending to Mass, numbers of catholics decreasing...

These priests have always emphasized the need to show utmost respect to the Holy Eucharist. A lot of reverence is shown to the Blessed Sacrament, which Catholics are supposed to believe is the REAL presence of Christ. This reverence takes the form of genuflecting, kneeling, etc. Due to a career assignment, I now live on the East Coast in a Middle Atlantic state. In my new parish, I am surprised at the LACK of reverence shown to the Blessed Sacrament. Few people in this parish genuflect before seating themselves, there are no kneelers, and most people receive the Blessed Sacrament in the hand instead of on the tongue. Nothing is ever said by the diocesan priest(s) on the proper etiquette toward Jesus in the Eucharist. Yes, it BOTHERS me to see such a LAX attitude. As I understand it, the writings and the Gospels along with the Hebrew scriptures, (OT), were functioning among the early church quite soon; in fact many before the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem in 70AD. What happened in later councils of the Bishops was the official recognition of what was already being used. It is considered by some to be the creation of the false gospels in the later centuries of the early Church, (like the gospel of Thomas and such things), that prompted the decision of the early church fathers to officially recognize what had been used since the beginning of the Christian church. Edit: I just wanted to add that Protestants, evangelical or not, affirm this as the importance of the Word of God is held with great fervor.

It was a good analysis on the pitfalls of organized religion both in Catholic AND Protestant services. It’s never been about religion in Christianity, it’s about a relationship with Jesus Christ. It has never been how, it’s always been who. Religion sets boundaries limiting our understanding of who and how to worship, thereby trying to imprison the infinite in a finite form.
Would there be a part two to this video dealing with the concern of idolatry in the form of intercessory prayer to the Saints? I understand the premise behind intercessory prayer, but it still sounds as if we indirectly say that the Holy Spirit is not enough to turn to in prayer; which again places limits on God

Catholics do not worship Our Lady, Mary, we pray to her and we pray to the angels and saints.
The word "pray " means to ask, beseech, entreat, beg, implore, petition, request...
We ask Mary, as the Mother of God, to pray for us; to take our requests, our petitions, our needs, and to place them before God on our behalf.
Remember the marriage feast at Cana?
Mary saw that they had run out of wine, and, on behalf of the host, she pointed this out to her Son, knowing full well that he would not refuse a request from her.
She is our mother also, and we can go to her with confidence that she will intercede for us.

Father I want to have a dialog with you about this topic. I can say the same thing about the Novus Ordo since it was made to focus on the people. Don't worship the creature, worship the creator. There is no point of focusing on the people when we worship God. The liturgy is ultimately about God, not us. The part that is for us is when we receive in the end. The real question is not whether the liturgy should be worshipped or not. It is about worshipping God in the best way. So it is up to us to compare and see, which liturgy gives more reverence to God? Which liturgy expresses the truth more? Which liturgy shows that we are a church that has 2000 years old of heritage not 50?? The traditional worship is better in showing all of that. Not that the Novus Ordo is invalid, but that it is inferior in its gestures and expressions. So it all boils down to this question: does the way we worship God matter? If it does, then we are justified in fighting for reverence. If it is not, then burn the Torah for God in it puts details on how the temple should be belt.

If I choose to reverence the HOLY EUCHARIST more than the word or sacraments or any other means.. that is between God and me... We all have or must have a personal relationship with our Creator .. Jesus makes that easy and understandable the HOLY Spirit guides us on our journey.. why should any person not only question but decide for me...

@Harley Mann thank you for your comment. I agree that there is no "one way" to worship God, as it is evident from the different rites within the Catholic church. However, the Novus Ordo is s different case. It is not just a mere "new style" but it is a rite where the sacrafical aspect is diminished, as it is evident when we compare the old and new rite side to side. A lot of penitence prayers were removed or replaced and universal aspects (East and West) were changed, such as the seperation of nave and the sanctuary, secular music, dancing in mass, etc. We need a reform to the reform to help fix this problem.

    • @fadibuni
      @fadibuni 4 роки тому

@Harley Mann I have no problem with vernacular. The other rites of the church use vernacular, each to a certain extent. I myself am a Syriac Catholic, not a Latin rite Catholic. I do appreciate the beauty of the liturgies that we have as a church and hope to restore the reverence and mystery. My church, for example, had a curtain that separates the nave and the sanctuary. It is a beautiful reminder of the relation between the Jewish temple and the church temple. I see no good in taking it away.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 🤨 Misunderstandings of Catholic practices lead to claims of idolatry, but there are legitimate concerns about idolatry within the Catholic Church.
00:53 🙌 Idolatry involves placing complete trust in something other than God, treating it as divine; not limited to physical images.
01:49 ⛪ Worshipping the liturgy itself, rather than God, can become a form of idolatry, focusing on details over genuine worship.
03:12 🔍 Excessive focus on liturgical mechanics can overshadow the worship of God, turning the form of worship into an end in itself.
05:02 🍞 Even with the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, distorted attitudes and dispositions can turn it into a form of idolatry.
06:22 🤝 Worship should be rooted in an authentic relationship with the living God, rather than a distorted understanding.
08:08 🙏 True worship goes beyond rituals, recognizing God's presence and leading to transformation, holiness, and charity.
09:06 💡 Avoid focusing on rituals over relationships, divisive worship, or creating a skewed image of God; strive for genuine worship and becoming more like Christ.

I’ve seen this same idolatry of worship in the Lutheran Church. Of course, we have a greater diversity of worship practices and styles, but at its heart, our worship is centered on gathering together to thank and praise God, to receive His gifts in Word and Sacrament. I have thoroughly enjoyed your content - we may have some differences, but ecumenism is important as we are both God’s children, disciples of Christ, and part of the invisible Church.

I believe that people ignore the correct meaning of "idolatry", and think that idolatry is to bow in front of a statue (like Lutheran churches) or even having a statue or figure (like other churches that rejects any image of God or his kingdom- like Islam and evangelical congregations). They seem to forget the deeper meaning of idolatry, and that is the concept of dedicating your life and thoughts to something or somebody else outside of God, as it were god.
I believe that this is what Christ was referring to in the gospels. There's "physical" idolatry and is easy to condemn and to avoid -but psychological or spiritual idolatry is something much complex that people often ignores.
Just because someone doesn't worship a statue doesn't mean that they don't fall for the deeper meaning of idolatry.

Latin mass in where I live is usually held once a month. My friend and I from my Parish who is also into traditionalism would go to our Parish Church whenever Latin Mass is not present. I often have arguments with him because he's so critical to the Novus Ordo mass down to the tee that he even keeps a digital note for every time the priests commit "liturgical abuse" which I often disagree with him because he was comparing it to the Latin Mass which is a different form of Mass, what you say is really true and I cannot disagree because I experience this quite often, many people are misled by attending mass with the idea of making the mass "like the old days" where I for one prefer the Latin Mass because I feel really connected to God in an emotional and spiritual level when I speak in Latin because that is where I feel most comfortable in worshiping much like how you were talking about how we are humans and we like material and tangible things for example candles and incense in your previous videos.
But however in fairness I hope that you would also address or make a disclaimer in the future when you make a video critical of us Traddies and some of our tendencies, please just adress that we are not all pharisees cause the stereotype is already harsh on us.

Hey Father, I'm a former benedictine novice in a monastery which celebrated TLM and now I'm preparing to enter a greek-catholic seminary in France (my country) I just LOVED this video because I have been myself struggling with "worship of worship". What I would say is that I'm not necessarily SINNING when I get angry because of the lack of sacredness of a liturgy...at the beginning I felt ashamed to be so angry and I knew that it was a kind of obsession, but now I have realized that it's just a matter of bad thoughts coming without my consent ; what I can do is just staying there and focusing again on the presence of Christ among us. But still, I don't know how to get rid of this anger and when I'm at my parents' place without any reverent liturgies I am suffering so hard that sometimes I decide to get some fresh air and I attend mass in an orthodox monastery (there's no greek catholic community there) I often speak of myself as a person suffering of a liturgical virus which I got in my TLM monastery. Any advice? It would be so great to be like a child who sees his friend Jesus and not the cold and intolerant judge I am sometimes...

I look up to you for your humbleness. I was raised with the ordinary Mass and fell in love with the Eucharist through it. I like how simple and accesible it can be, while conveying all the message of what is happening (both the meal and the sacrifice). TLM for me has too many details which are meant to point towards God, but are distracting instead to me. This is not to say you shouldn't love TLM or Greek liturgy, just to tell you some things you might be seeing as irreverence are probably not to be interpreted in that way. Maybe it could help you to think that, to remember we're like little children before God. Our Father accepts the worship of our hearts, not how beautiful we make it look on the outside. For God, even the most reverent and ancient liturgy is like the picture of a 6 years-old, so He's not less worshipped if other child picture looks like a 4 years-old doodle. So maybe you could think this when you feel bad: the doodles of a sincere brother, praising the Lord, and the same Mass for everyone, which connect us all regardless of the liturgy.

It really upsets me when people accuse me of worshipping the Mother of God or the Saints, and then go on to worship many other idols that they're unaware of, ones that I'm actually guilty of worshipping as well (e.g. phone addiction). But what truly makes me upset is when they say we aren't Christians because of this sin--why did Jesus come to redeem us if we aren't all sinners? Even if we did worship Mary or the Saints, it wouldn't mean that Jesus closes the gates of Heaven on us, even if we accept Him as our one and only Savior. Non-Catholics saying that Catholics "aren't Christians" or "won't go to Heaven" because we "worship idols" is just appalling. The whole reason Jesus came down from Heaven was to save us from sin.

In pointer 1 of the video, there are examples of what we consider idolatry that the object of worship is not necessarily a deity. I forgot how the proverb is written but in paraphase, whatever is in your heart is the thing you worship. For example by orienting your life to gaining wealth as an end itself instead of using it as an instrument means that wealth is your god since you have dedicated your life, soul, mind, and heart on it.
In pointer two, it is even harder to communicate this and this is the first time i heard this. I never heard any other catholic ever address this issue.

The Church needs both "liberal" and "conservative" views like the 2 lungs of the Church, East and West. But we need to find a balance between those views.
One is more suited for ensuring that the rubrics are being followed and that worship is truly worship and not a hootinanny ceremony. While the other is more suited to works of charity (education, ecumenicism, etc.).

Discussions regarding the irreverent handling of the consecrated Host is NOT a trivial discussion bordering on idol worship, an obsession on rubrics. It is a recognition of the True Presence . . . Drawing attention to the failure to give the proper respect and understanding to the treasure of our Faith that has handed down to us by our fore bearers is not idolatry. Instead, it is a serious sin to try to make the Catholic faith fit the trends of the modern age . . . I agree that there are many arguments regarding the language to be used at Mass. So why is there such a knee jerk hostility to the Mass in Latin by so many Catholics? I guess you are correct. A fanatical embrace of Vatican II leading to the destruction of the Church could be a form of idolatry.

  • @Daniel_Abraham1099

Although I understand your point. It seems to be a way of shutting down discussion of legitimate questions of liturgy. If your point is taken to the extreme, that tradition can be idolatry, then it seems to open the door for protestant views of small t tradition as completely irrelevant, and that God only looks at the heart. However we believe there is an importance for the liturgy. Of course it's not supposed to be idolatry, but it is also not supposed to be abused. As I see it in Biblical terms there are two equally damaging extremes.
The Trad Jew/Catholic who only cares about rubrics for sacrfice yet has no contrite heart and their sacrfices are rejected by God just like the Israelites who were then exiled.
The other being the modernist Jew/Catholic that has no regard for the sacred or for liturgy. They're abuse results in God striking them down regardless of their intention. Examples include Aron's sons who mishandled the incense, Uzzah who touched the Ark of the Covenant, israelites bringing an idol in Gods house. All were struck dead.
Both extremes are sins and should be avoided and addressed. Although Fr Casey, Bishop Barron, and many mainstream catholics have thankfully tackled the issues of Rubrick Traditionalism, there also needs to be videos done on the opposite but equally deadly abuse of liturgy.
I'm sure many Catholics know of parishes that mishandle the eucharist to allow particles to fall on the floor and be stomped on with no regard. Yet we have saints in our history who were martyred trying to protect eucharist. That's just one example of an abuse that should be brought to attention.

Agreed. I think in general the good father does a good job of promoting moderation in these issues (he seems to have both liberal and traditional leanings) I would be happy to see him tackle a bit more the abuses committed by the other side of the aisle. But as a Catholic who loves the Extraordinary Form Mass and strongly prefers Gregorian Chant over any modern stuff at Church I tend to see with sadness a lot of divisiveness among Northern Traditionalists (I say Northern because I do not see such trends in my home country of Brazil among traditionally minded Catholics) because this is the group I prefer to mingle with so it would be nice if they straightened that out lol either way, both sides have serious problems to deal with.

There is definitely room for a discussion about the validity of mass. Priests can be extremely clerical when they make the mass about themselves, changing the words and actions to fit their desires. This needs to be dealt with. My point was less on the "validity" of mass and more on the spiritual preferences, the minor rubrics. Does it REALLY matter if the priest genuflects to the tabernacle when walking to read the Gospel? According to the rubrics, he shouldn't, but it doesn't invalidate the mass. Does it REALLY matter if a church decides to use more Latin or English, has certain vestments, has a certain tone, etc.? I think we put too much into our personal preferences and not enough into the mystery of Christ's presence.

As a Catholic.. I kind of agree that for some Catholics, having statues is sort of like idolatry. Though probably more in their day to day life. They need to pray before statues or have statue of a saint in their car for safety etc.. our faith and our relationship with Christ is in our hearts.. I don't own statues, or need or desire statues with my faith.. i remember when I was a young boy, my grand mother took me to an evening mass, at that particular service everyone lined up to kiss the feet of the statue of Christ. As a child, I did what I was told but in my heart, it felt very wrong. As far as I know the Roman Catholic rite is the only church that has statues. The eastern rites and orthodox use icons. Myvfather was Russiann orthodx. I do like Icons. They are very mysterious almost like a window or portal to the spiritual world in the sense they stir our imaginations into the heavenly realm.. I think it is an interesting dimension of this that when something is in a sense "close to God" or created in order to point the person towards God, that it is more readily converted into an idol. For me an example of this in the Bible is the bronze serpent on the pole. According to the narrative with Moses it was created at God's commandment as a means for turning the people's minds to God so they could be healed. But in the account of Josiah, it appears such a cult had developed around it that the king had it destroyed because it had become an idol.

That is my (plebeian) understanding of it. The host is but a single tiny physical manifestation of the spirit of the Lord. It has God's blessing and presence, but does not contain the full fruit of His goodness; it is but a cell of his body.
Also, it's still a piece of bread.

    • @BreakingInTheHabit
      @BreakingInTheHabit  4 роки тому +18

I'm not sure that I understand your question completely, so feel free to clarify, but I don't entirely see a difference between what you've said. The host itself IS the infinite mystery of the Trinitarian God. That is the true presence of Jesus Christ, body, blood, soul, and divinity, sent by the Father and made present by the Holy Spirit.
What I would say is this. Yes, it should lead us beyond just a sacrament. A sacrament is the best thing we have on earth but nothing close to what we experience in heaven. Can you imagine how awful it would be if all we had was Eucharistic adoration in heaven!? I don't want a transformed host still under the accidents of bread and wine! I want the living and true Jesus, who can speak and listen and respond. Just because Jesus is truly present doesn't mean that Jesus is *completely* present in the way that he exists in heaven.
Although, that isn't really the point I'm making in this video. The point I set out to make is that people can look at the host, call it Jesus, and yet be idolatrous because *their conception of Jesus is tragically wrong.* If what people worship is a God who hates their enemies, is okay with sin, justifies our use of power over others, etc. then we are not actually worshipping Jesus, we are worshipping a God we created in our minds that we call "Jesus."
