  • Father Mike Schmitz wants to address some confusion regarding Catholics’ veneration of saints. In this video, he explains how-far from idolatry or paganism -statues, paintings, and icons of the saints are reminders of what God can do in someone’s life. Therefore, honoring the saints doesn’t take away from the glory we give God. It actually brings him greater glory.

love this ~~~ St. Augustine: "When it comes to the Saints, we give them "dulia" which means honor, veneration. When it comes to Mary, we give her "hyperdulia" which is this even more honor and veneration. When it comes to God, we give him "latria" which is worship. And worship belongs to him alone. "

Worship is synonymous with veneration. When you are giving your attention to something and adoring it, and focusing on it more than God, that's idolatry

IDOLATRY is done overdoing something. Example:
      1) HONOR a Saint by praying for him before a statue or picture, MENTALLY?
      2) It becomes IDOLATRY when you pray, wipe the Statue with kerchief and even kiss it to be true.

When protestants claim that we "worship" Mary and the saints, they are claiming to know our thoughts and intentions, which they do NOT know. We Catholics worship GOD And we HONOUR Mary and the saints for their service to God and for the example they set for us to show us that we too can acheive holiness.

@@thegospel1668 1. LUKE 1:48 tells us that all generations will call Mary Blessed. Which church calls her the BLESSED Virgin Mary, and treats her accordingly? Catholic or Protestant??? The answer is that We Catholics are doing what is right and what is Biblical.

      ● MATTHEW 27: 52 -53: When Jesus was raised from the dead Many were raised up with him. 53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
      ● LUKE 1619-30 The story of the rich man and Lazarus show The Rich man, Lazarus and Abraham, all concious and interacting with each other even though they have physically died.

@@thegospel1668 Forgive me if I doubt your claim that you know the true Mary of the bible, since the Protestant faith does everything they can to deny that she is even a part of the gospel story, that is recorded in the bible, but instead pretend that she isn't even there.
Let me show you MORE scriptures that you skip over to make your claims:
LUKE 1:24-49 God's own messenger, The Angel Gabriel greeted Mary with: "Hail full of grace (purity) The LORD is with thee" Grace is the pure state that God imparts to human beings by which we are saved. The LORD is WITH Her, but you ignore her anywhere, pretending that she has no part in the gospel and is insignificant, even though the bible makes it clear that GOD chose her. In these same passages, it tells us (LUKE 1:48) that "all generations will call her blessed" Which church calls her the BLESSED Virgin Mary, Catholic or protestant????
Queenship: Rev 12:1 A great sign appeared in the heavens, a woman clothed with the sun, the moon under her feet, and on her head a CROWN of 12 stars. (denoting queenship as she appears in the heavens) As you continue to read in Rev 12. you will see that this woman is the woman who gives birth to the male child that will rule the nations. The Child therefore is JESUS and so the WOMAN is MARY.
Rev 12:17 The dragon wages war against the woman and protestants (who are following Martin Luther instead of Jesus) do the dragon's work.
Jewish tradition tells us that the MOTHER of the King holds the title of QUEEN: King Solomon had between 700-1000 wives, yet his MOTHER sat on his right as QUEEN and she interceded between the people and the King. Solomon told his mother: "I will deny nothing to you. MARY is ALSO Mother of the King....a more powerful King than Solomon was and she holds that same position and also intercedes between the3 people and the King.
I have ALREADY Shown you from the bible that you (claim to) believe in that her intercession and the intercession of the saints is valid and biblical.

Christ gave us an example of prayer in Matthew 6:9-13. Christ is the utmost perfect example of living life by the Spirit. Christ prayed directly to the father, not to abraham, or moses, or king david, but to God Himself. The term "saints" in the bible defines a righteous person. Christ is the one who interecedes for us Romans 8:34. Christ defeated death, but the saints did not. Praying to saints for intercession is praying to the dead. Hebrews 4:16 says we have access to Gods throne of grace to receive mercy and help in times of need. 1 Timothy 2:25 says ONLY Christ is the mediator between God and men. Therefore mary, agnes, patrick, etc. cannot mediate for us. Hebrews 7:25 says “He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them”. The bible is explicit about people on earth praying for them, but there is not ONE verse in the bible asking for the prayers of those in heaven. The bible says nowhere that "saints" can hear our prayers in heaven. The bible DOES say that when a necromancer conjured the spirit of the prophet samuel he said “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?”. Praying to saints is idolatry.

They didn't really believe me when I explained that no, we pray FOR the Pope. Of course, there is always the anti-Mary thing. Many religions and ideologies need a common enemy, which is usually depicted as evil, usually almost cartoonish, with lies. Communism and fascism, for instance, did this against liberal democracy. Protestantism is based on the belief that the Catholic church is evil. It is quite difficult to remove this from the main Protestant denominations. However, it rarely happens the other way around. Never heard a Catholic priest saying "Protestants are Devil's tool because they hate St. Mary".
However, in my experience, there are many Protestants that are just normal Christians, that do not feel anti-Catholic, but just brothers. Which is how I feel, by the way.

Father did a great job here.
As a convert to the Catholic faith, I would also clarify the term "pray." Because Protestants don't pray to the saints, they have lost the secondary meaning of "pray" in their vocabulary. Because they only pray to God, praying is automatically only equated with latria in their minds. So if one says, "Pray to Mary, she will help you." They interiorly (at least) stiffen with horror at what is being suggested. However, Catholics always use and understand the meaning of the word "pray" (in whatever grammatical form), when referring to the saints, as its possible second dictionary definition and that is "to ask." Most Protestants have heard lines from Shakespeare at some point in their life. They would do well to recall hearing the expression, "I pray thee....", which today we would say, " I ask you..." Catholics have simply retained the secondary use of "pray", where as, Protestants have not.

      also, Remember:
1 intercession means praying for one another, when I ask for someone to pray for me (a canonized saint for example) I'm asking for his intercession.
2 the Bible came through the Church, not the contrary. One can use the Sacred Scriptures to defend heretic positions. All the heresies were created utilizing the Bible. That's why the Church founded by Christ, upon Peter, and guided by the Holy Spirit, defines what is right about some theological topics. If it wasn't the Church, Christians would defend nowadays that Jesus wasn't divine, these was the heresy of the Arians (who used only the Scriptures to base all of their interpretations). However, the Church saw this heresy and pointed out. In the end, if you base all your interpretation in the Bible, without the magisterium guided by the Holy Spirit, you'll have a problem defining what is the right or wrong interpretation.
Hope I have helped, if not you can always read the Catechism of the Catholic Church, there you'll have the all the teachings and their base in the Bible.

Our Lady told one Saint what Joy her Divine Son has prepared for his faithful Holy Priests, is beyond all imagining, so go and unhesitatingly and Joyfully grasp your vocation with open arms; this life is little more than the blink of an eye and is over before you know it! Then I would like to add this, God in his infinite Love and having created the human family turns the Church itself into a Universal Holy Family, he provides a loving Mother in the form of Our Blessed Lady and his great and faithful followers become our very own Brothers and Sisters in Christ, his Love knowing no bounds then allows for such brothers and sisters as they would in any "human" family to help their siblings by prayer and powerful intercession. What family is not richer for having a Loving caring maternal Mother and Loving caring brothers and sisters? Any Church without Our Blessed Lady is akin to a family without a Mother. Those who deny Our Lady and the Saints have not grasped the extent of God's Love and care, indeed they attempt to essentially curtail it and in doing so deny themselves access to a part of his everlasting Love and they are all the more poorer for having done that.

The Cherubims represented the real/ live ones in heaven . The whole purpose of that temple was for sacrifices to cleanse peoples sins. When Christ came, the veil was torn and declared it is finished, no more sacrifices. This alludes to the fact that those statues no longer apply after Christ death. Jesus has fulfilled all what was represented by them. This means that a reference to the old Temple statues as a basis for statues in the Christianity world after the cross is on wrong footing. John 2:19-21
Same way when Moses made a bronze snake (Numbers 21:9), This pointed to Jesus (John 3:14) so when He died on the cross, our eyes are on a Living Jesus not a statute of Jesus. Israel had back to back rebellions against God concerning worshipping idols, Hosea 4:17.
Idolatry is a sin that God had been whipping Israel for. Are we spared???
2.Veneration of the so called saints and their place as mediators significantly removes Jesus form the intercessory role ( Romans 10:8, 1 John 2:1-2, Hebrews 8:1-2, 1Timothy 2:5. So any removal of Holy things or Person that God ordained replaced with anything = Sacrilege= idolatory (Romans 2:22)
In addition, the place that the statues occupy and serve is that of the Holy Spirit responsible for bringing the heavenly atmosphere at a place where true worship occurs ( John 4 : 23-24). Again this is Sacrilege. ie Statues
So anything that replaces a Holy thing or individual is an idol. King Josiah ( 1 Kings 23:1-7) destroyed all statues in the Temple and God was pleased with Him.

Unfortunately, Father, many of the false impressions that those anti-catholic people (I was one for 20 years before I saw the truth of Catholicism) carry around come directly from poorly catechized Catholics. I also think that there are some of those other poorly catechized Catholics that are in error and do pray TO saints. Example: St. Anthony. People pray TO St. Anthony to help them find things. They do not ask St. Anthony to pray to Jesus that they find the thing, but to help personally. And when the item is found, they thank Anthony, and not Jesus.
Again, St. Micheal, DEFEND us in battle. We seek MICHEAL' S defense from him. We are not asking him to pray for us. And we are not asking Jesus to send Micheal.
Our faith is so amazing and beautiful, and I thank you, Father Mike for doing your part to clear this up.

Saint Anthony is my best human friend who isn't Divine or Conceived without Sin. Yeah, I ask him directly for his help, with recognition that he's only allowed to help me by the grace of God. It all comes from God. The same with asking St. Michael to defend us...which is only asking him to carry out the mission God gave him, after all. Consider the line in the St. Michael Prayer, "And do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, *by the power of God*, cast into hell satan and all the evil spirits that prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls."

As a Protestant, my grief with the idea of Saints is two-fold. I understand that Catholics do not consider what they do praying to Saints (in many cases) but I do. If I pray to Saint Anthony and some one in China prays to Saint Anthony, he could not hear those prayers unless he was in two places at the same time. That is omnipresence, which is a characteristic I reserve for the Lord alone. My second grief is that I consider all Christians that have passed to be Saints. I cannot earn Sainthood. I gain Sainthood via my salvation and justification in Christ. But that ultimately is the division between us! Thank you all for being respectful and welcoming in this discussion. God bless.

@@crossbearer6453 to your first comment, I wish you could. I'm not so proud I can't receive a good rebuke. But the fact is, papal doctrines CANNOT stand on Scripture alone thus, the need of 'traditions'' propped up by ''Apostolic accession''. Did you know that the written Word mingled with (traditions) was strongly condemned by our Lord at his first coming? It's true. The Jewish view of tradition in the days of Christ was composed of three interconnected elements. In their view, there was an original Deposit of truth revealed by God which was composed of two sources:
      [1] The written revelation
      and
      [2] The unwritten traditions.
At first the written revelation was given a position of higher authority than the unwritten traditions, but in the course of time the unwritten traditions were placed on the same level as the written Scriptures and in the time of Christ, the unwritten traditions had assumed a position of even higher authority than what Moses actually wrote. Read Mark 7. Thats just a sample of the tradition's Christ had to meet, always rebuking them (traditions) referring all back to the Written Word.
One could say with confidences..Our Lord believed and taught ''solo scriptora'' by these constant rebukes of traditions, why? Because traditions have a way of trampling on the written word. Notice.....(Mark 7)
5''Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with un washen hands?
6'' He answered and said unto them, Well hath Isaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
7 ''Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men''.
8 ''For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men''..
My brother the papal view on the traditions todays is exactly that of the Jews! Would you like more evidences?

Roman Catholics attempt to “bypass” these clear Scriptural principles by claiming they do not “worship” Mary or saints, but rather that they only “venerate” Mary and the saints. Using a different word does not change the essence of what is being done. A definition of “venerate” is “to regard with respect or reverence.” Nowhere in the Bible are we told to revere anyone but God alone.
When forced to admit that they do, in fact, worship Mary, Catholics will claim that they worship God through her, by praising the wonderful creation that God has made. Mary, in their minds, is the most beautiful and wonderful creation of God, and by praising her, they are praising her Creator. For Catholics, this is analogous to directing praise to an artist by praising his sculpture or painting. The problem with this is that God explicitly commands against worshiping Him through created things. We are not to bow down and worship the form of anything in heaven above or earth below (Exodus 20:4-5). Romans 1:25 could not be more clear: “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator―who is forever praised. Amen.” Yes, God has created wonderful and amazing things. Yes, Mary was a godly woman who is worthy of our respect. No, we absolutely are not to worship God “vicariously” by praising things (or people) He has created. Doing so is blatant idolatry. Prayer is an act of worship. When we pray to God, we are admitting that we need His help. Directing our prayers to anyone other than God is robbing God of the glory that is His alone.

Thank you Fr. Mike. I have been Lutheran all of my life, and believe we are the closest of the protestants to our Catholic brothers and sisters. I have lately thought a lot about Mary, mother of God. Although we acknowledge her in our liturgy and other things, I wish we did more to honor her. Maybe I'm not comfortable with 50 Hail Mary's for the 5 mysteries right now, but I feel we don't give enough praise to her, her life, and her sacrifice when she hsd to see her Son on that cross sacrificing himself for all of us. Please think of me and pray I get more clarity, I dont believe I would do myself harm being a bit more Catholic, but the thought of changing at my age is a bit scary and a daunting task. Michaels case on praying to the saints is interesting and persuasive but NOT biblical. No where does it say to pray to the saints, disciples, if so please show? This teaching is added, and as for him saying the "christian" church approves anything, this does not make it right to God.
We should be careful when going on our own as a way to offer up some sort of service to God, again let's not be like Aarons sons, who offered up an unauthorized offering before the LORD, who then consumed them with fire.
God is VERY particular and he mediates on our behalf always for everything no one else. No one else can hear you but him..so why pray to someone who cannot hear Mary included.
Praying to the saints and bowing before made statues isn't as innocent as you may think. Look at how jealous God gets and how particular he is in everything. Included adding to his words, warnings ⚠️ till the very end of the Bible, of not adding to what He taught. In which their religion has and does. Not good.

I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.”

      1. Moses erected a Temple/sanctuary according to the pattern shown to him by God. The representation/ shadow of Heavenly Temple in which Jesus ministers ( Exodus 25:8)( Hebrews 9:1-2)

Great video, I’m just not sold on the proof offered that they intercede for us. The scriptures offered were Revelation 4-8, and I read them and didn’t see the saints interceding, only worshiping. The closest you get is when those who had been martyred ask how long it will be until their blood is avenged. That’s it. I’m not really sold on the idea that they can hear our requests for prayer. At most it seems they might have a general idea of what’s going on on earth. Although I like the idea of my spiritual brothers and sisters being with Christ in heaven, I would need more Scriptural justification for asking them to pray for me. The apostle Paul always instructed believers to pray for each other and to pray for him and to pray for the earthly authorities, but not once did he instruct them to ask the saints in heaven for their prayers. Nor does he ever indicate that he does so. Nor does any other New Testament author say anything like this. It doesn’t seem that such an idea originated with the original apostles.

What I do know is that Jesus said only God is good and that all have sinned and fallen short of His glory. To me, that means if I ask a saint something I am relying on another flesh as myself to ask God Most High when Jesus told us that He wants us to abide in Him and He in us.

How would Paul pray to saints in heaven if there weren't any yet? Acts isn't even really scripture if you want to get into it. They were the teachers and the 12 got to come together and decide what was from God and what wasn't. Jesus never mentioned anything about gentiles being Circumcised or not being. That was later in acts where they came together.

God created the Communion of Saints. It is part of how all of existence works. Avail yourself of this gift. Find out who your patron Saints are and learn about them. Venerate them. Ask them to help and guide you and they will. And they will use you to do God's work on earth. The Communion of Saints is very powerful. You are on the team of many patron saints and they each have many people on their teams. It is a complex web like network. Become an active part of it. Participate. The saints are building battalions who will return with Jesus and fight for Jesus at the Second Coming. Luke says Jesus will return with the Saints. My own family corresponds to a group of saints who lived about 800 yrs ago. The coincidences are so many that it can not be a coincidence. The Communion of Saints is a real phenomena. When the Saints come marching in you are going to want to be part of that number. Start getting to know your patron Saints now and building your network.

There are no verses telling us to pray to saints, my friend. The church comes before. It was the church that came up with the bible in 393 aC...
The saints are not apart from Jesus, death won't apart us from God. When you ask for a friend to pray for you, you are doing the same. The thing is that everything we have comes from God, the power, the conscience, the presence (existance). For example: when you have the power, the ability to do something, ypu borrow it from God, from His essence (omnipotent). And this works with everything. Another example: when God lets people know things ahead from their time, God is alowing them to participate on His CONSCIENCE (He knows all: omnisciente). Etc. In heaven this material wall doenst exist anymore, so saints (as mentioned in the apocalipse like father Mike mentioned) pray for us and God let them know things we dont know. In eternity there is NO TIME or BODIES. Saints share a much deeper relation with God. For example Virgen Mary know a lot of things and she actually hears us, not because she is a godess, but because GOD allowed her to listen. Before Jesus died He gave His mother to all of us as a mother... it is so simple

@@unknowninfamous2346 yeah, but those testimonials are pure experience and we should rely on the Holy Spirit guiding the only Church. But yes, some must tell the truth, idk.

We should ask others to pray for us (1 Thes 5,25) (James 5,16). We believe saints are as alive (or maybe more alive) than fellow Christians on earth (Lk 20,38) (Jn 3,36), so we ask for prayer to them.

Reading comments that disagree with what Fr is saying just shows that people choose ignorance. What Fr said makes complete sense logically and scripturally and yet there’s still people that choose to ignore the explanation. At this point it’s willful ignorance.

I am not sure if I should feel sad or funny when people speaking out against Catholics due to saints and Icons.... then say Orthodox is better. Orthodox take their saints and Icons even more seriously.

Roman is adapted into the Catholic Church's name when Constantinople saw a vision of the Holy Cross through a dream or what not and then after the Romans won Constantinople converted the entire country of the Roman Empire that instead of worshipping Pagan gods and goddesses they should worship Christ, that's why it's called the Roman Catholic Church!

Yes, we are all Catholic, but these are Particular Catholic Churches (sui juris), not Rites. The people are the Church, the Body of Christ; the Rite is the form of worship & set of related Traditions, e.g. days & form of fasting, pertaining to an ethnicity or nationality or monastic order. We own the Rite, & use it or take part in it; it doesn’t own us. I, for example, belong to the Russian Catholic Particular Church, & the Byzantine Rite belongs to me. Also, the services of Eastern Churches are not Mass: the Mass is named after ‘missa est’, the Latin dismissal of the Roman Rite; the Eastern Churches don’t use Latin, & the Rites are quite different, even amongst themselves. The closest thing to a dismissal in the Byzantine Rite, for example, is ‘Let us depart in peace’ (but there are several minutes of praying & chanting left when it’s chanted, so is it really even a dismissal? 😄). By the way, other common mistakes are referring to ‘the Eastern Rite’-there are 6 Eastern Rites (& 10 extant Western Rites), & referring to ‘the Eastern Church’-there are 23 Particular Eastern Churches (& 1 Particular Western Church).
The Rites are, in estimated order of antiquity, West Syriac, Alexandrian, Antiochian, Byzantine, Ambrosian, Armenian, Benedictine, Roman, Mozarabic, East Syriac, Carthusian, Norbertine, Cistercian, Bragan, Carmelite, & Dominican. Then there are smaller, more local variations (such as style of music) in many of these. The Particular Churches are, in order of Catholic establishment or union, Latin (or Roman), Maronite, Belarusian, Slovak, Ruthenian, Romanian, Melkite, Armenian, Coptic, Syriac, Italo-Albanian, Chaldean, Bulgarian, Greek, Hungarian, Russian, Syro-Malabar, Syro-Malankara, Eritrean, Albanian, Ethiopian, Macedonian, Croatian & Serbian, & Eritrean.
So yes, the Roman Catholic Church is only 1 of those. It doesn’t make sense at all if anyone calls the rest of us Roman Catholics! Nothing about our Churches themselves is Roman; we just have the same Pope who happens to be in Rome.

Greta Hoostal-For the first 280 years of Christian history, Christianity was banned by the Roman Empire, and Christians were terribly persecuted. This changed after the “conversion” of the Roman Emperor Constantine. Constantine provided religious toleration with the Edict of Milan in AD 313, effectively lifting the ban on Christianity. Later, in AD 325, Constantine called the Council of Nicea in an attempt to unify Christianity. Constantine envisioned Christianity as a religion that could unite the Roman Empire, which at that time was beginning to fragment and divide. While this may have seemed to be a positive development for the Christian church, the results were anything but positive. Just as Constantine refused to fully embrace the Christian faith, but continued many of his pagan beliefs and practices, so the Christian church that Constantine promoted was a mixture of true Christianity and Roman paganism.

Bowing, kissing the feet of, and prayer are forms of worship.
When you do these things you go beyond veneration, and are worshiping the saints.
My problem with praying to the saints is that Jesus specifically taught us how to pray. And when he taught us how, he said to pray to God the Father. Not Mary. Not the Saints. Just God the Father.

Well, right from the birth of Jesus he was worshiped, "As soon as the Magi laid eyes on the infant Christ, “they bowed down and worshiped Him” (Matthew 2:11). And another example, Just after Jesus amazed the disciples by walking on water, “those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, Truly you are the Son of God"(Matthew 14:33). You need more examples? Are you a Jehovah's Witness by chance?

I was raised Catholic, and I've wondered this question for far longer than I left the church. I don't regret my choice for leaving the Catholic church, but I respect this viewpoint highly. But I should clarify I was so caught up in "what religion is truth" for a while that I forgot to realize JESUS is truth, and we ALL have access to it regardless of the religion we're in. Which is why I don't stick with a specific one, and I don't like religious "traditions", I'm always for learning biblical truth, and if I'm wrong about something I've read, I don't want to hang onto my misunderstanding as a traditional thing. Sometimes it takes being a Catholic, a Seventh Day Adventist, a Baptist, an Evangelist etc, to realize we're all brothers and sisters just dividing ourselves, but all doing our best to live for Christ in our own ways.
