    It's always funny to see you guys complain about the price, over here in Belgium, the Garberg is the cheapest full tang knife you can find, a KABAR BK2 or BK22 costs around 145 Euro over here, a BK16 costs around 138 Euro, a Top Knives B.O.B. costs around 190 Euro to 200 Euro (depending on which type of scales you want), the ESEE Laser Strike costs around 170 Euro, and an ESEE 4 around 130 Euro (without sheath, which costs about 80 Euro on itself ...)
    And the Garberg (with multimount sheath) only (yes you read it "ONLY") costs 99 Euro at the local outdoorshop. Sadly enough, people are so used to having these great knives from Mora for a ridiculous low price, (like the Mora Companion for around 12 Euro), that 100 Euro for a Mora seems outrageous. If the Mora Garberg was made by, let's say Fällkniven for example, nobody would raise his voice, but since it's a Mora, it should be cheap.
    So, in my opinion, you guys are a bit spoiled over there, with the low prices on knives and multitools, and Mora is a victim of its own success, by making good knives and selling them very cheap, nobody can understand how the Garberg could cost 100 Euro. While we would have no problem spending the same amount of money on a the same knife, made out of a lower quality steel, by one of the "high-quality" knife brands.
    As always, this is just my own, humble opinion.

      Yeah, compared to europe, it sounds like we in Australia are pretty lucky. I do wonder why the prices are so high over there, especially as there are lots of manufacturers in europe like Viper, Lionsteel, Mora, Boker, Helle etc. Maybe theres a tax or something?

      If you want a full tang, scandi grind knife for less than 100 Euro take a look at the Varusteleka website. Their knives are often out of stock as each batch sells quick but they do restock. And Moras aren't 'cheap'. They're about the right price. Mora's marketing 'problem' is that it sells to builders and agricultural workers who aren't prepared to pay the stupid, inflated prices that knife-a-holics happily pay for a slab of steel sandwiched between two pieces of plastic.

      +Dwight E Howell Yup, a little black paint helps, as does the title 'Bushcraft'. Mora is stuck with it's core market of industrial users though, as if it bumps up its prices too much customers will toodle off and buy something with less pretensions like a Hultafors.

      +ComUnSas btw, the Finnish retailer I mentioned in my first comment is selling a full tang scandi, knife only, for 33 Euro, plus a few Euro shipping. I've got one and the build quality is there. They're loving the Garberg launch and currently seem to be selling knives faster than they can stock them.

    Just bought my stainless Garberg yesterday 5/14/22 for $53.00 on Amazon , the price fluctuates from $53 - $70 you just have to constantly watch it for a few days . The same with the carbon steel Garberg , for that price it's Definitely a Must Have .....👍🖖

    truly enjoy your reviews, as I have seen countless number of them. I've been wanting the Gerber Strongarm for quite some time now and then the Garberg came out and I was torn between the two. I probably still will get both eventually but your review has renewed my resolve to have the Strong-arm as my first purchase. thanks man! keep the vids coming!

    I love my carbon garberg wouldn’t trade it for any of my survival knives I own and I own a lot from cheap to very expensive bushcraft knives I’ve done everything you can do to it and it stands up to everything I thrown at it and I really abuse and test a knife to its ability and beyond there abilities it was $84 dollars at a knife shop with the multi mount sheath

    Put some grip tape on and it’s an excellent knife. If the tape gets old or frayed, peel it off and replace it. In Canada we are used to putting tape on hockey sticks - it’s no big deal

    It is just so outrageous how everything bushcraft, hiking and camping is so over priced here in Australia. I have just purchased to Schrade knives and two SOG hawks coming in just over $260 and a DD Tarp at $127. It's ridiculous how the Aussie economy has pushed up prices so high for these products. Sorry about my rant. I love your videos keep them coming. Great review also. Just a shame about prices.

    • @BlackRifleSurvival
      @BlackRifleSurvival 8 років тому +2

      CedricAda Gear and Outdoors yeah I explain the cost offset on my video reminding folks of the lifetime warranty on the Garberg. They designed this knife on popular demand and in turn hold their warranty because it is the "fulltang" version. I have a few other moras I have yet to review but I know they also have a lifetime warranty but the website for Morakniv says under general use. So I wouldn't think chopping and batoning is covered...but yet they designed the Garberg to take down a tree if nessassary. I wouldn't do that to my knife but if it broke. Morakniv would not hesitate to get a replacement out. That's outstanding this company is able to honor that.

  • @SpartanJohns
    @SpartanJohns 7 років тому +2

    I like the handle...not enough girth near the blade for my taste but I do agree with you that a nice rubber coating would make it more comfortable...
    The thing which I do not like at all is the secondary bevel....Not as fine of an edge (thin) as I am used to when using my other Moras...

    • @CedricAda
      @CedricAda  7 років тому +1

      SpartanJohns yeah its a move clearly designed for strength under duress, but it makes the knife far less precise. On my Bushcraft Black i reprofiled it back to true scandi.

    I got mine for $78 USD on Amazon with the leather sheath. At this moment, 2:30pm 01/22/2020 it is $49 on Amazon. I think it's a good knife. Love the steel and the leather sheath, handle is ok. At these low prices I wouldn't hesitate to buy one and am about to order a 2nd. My only issue with mine was that the grind was uneven.

    I have had a different experience with this knife. I dont think its overpriced at all at the 90 I paid for it and the multi mount sheath. Its weird that Mora can deliver something that is a premium knife and people want the cheaper price.
    For me the handle ergonomics are great, its slicey while still being thick enough to handle anything I've thrown at it in the last month and I've thrown a lot at it.
    The spine and pommel scraper is really sharp and if you cant get a fire going with this knife...
    I own the SRK and the Strongarm for the best comparison and edge retention alone I'd take this over those two. I used my SRK for several years and it served me well but the Garberg replaced it hands down.
    Dont get me wrong...when you open the package it is ...underwhelming but I strongly believe that this will be my "forever" knife in this size range.

  • @TKDLION
    @TKDLION 7 років тому +1

    You should scuff up the slick part of the handle with some sandpaper. I did that on my Becker BK7 and it made a noticeable difference.
    I just ordered one on Amazon with leather sheath for $57. I don't intend to baton with it at all, but I still prefer to have the most durable knife possible. I also like heftier knives, and the full tang should add a bit of weight.

    Seems to me that the Garberg is a Jack of all trades and master of none. for me blade lenghts the F1 and the A1 is a great combo. The Garberg feels like the S1, to long blade to carve and other small tasks and to short to do some bigger work. good review thanks

  • @aHigherPower

  • @SatansShockTroop
    @SatansShockTroop 6 років тому +1

    I got this, & the kansbol same day. Even though the handles are the same, either because the black color die, or because the full tang, the Garberg felt slightly more slick to me. I just hit with a couple grits o' sandpaper and now its like felt, or leather feeling. Looks slightly shitty though, which I knew going in, so, beware. 200, then 800 or 1200.
    Anyone know what'll happen if I hit the handle with a light layer of beeswax, besides getting that deep black back?
    Anyway, best knife I've ever owned, but I've only owned like 8 or 10, half of which are moras. :D

    • @SatansShockTroop
      @SatansShockTroop 6 років тому +1

      I did the beeswax. It took the fuzziness out and restored it to a more stock handle, but feels a little different. After hand rubbing the beeswax in completely until there were no shiny spots, its no longer tacky, in the bad sense but is tacky in a good way. It feels like a Rubber mallet handle now, sort of.

    I wish it was 1cm longer (but still under / max 12) and had a handle a bit more similar to the bushcraft black.
    For its blade length I think the full tang and blade thickness aren't too useful.
    The stainless steel is okay I think, makes it universally a bit more sturdy / resilient which pairs well with the full tang idea I guess.
    But I still think at that size the bushcraft black is most likely the better deal though.

    The price argument against the Garberg comes from lazy habit of seeing low prices tacked on Mora knives.
    If you take into account Spanish knives from Muela or Cudeman (which are well known for a good price-performance) with a comparable steel and full tang design, the Garberg (now priced aroud EUR 70) yet again comes out as cheap for what it offers.
    Who would've thought.

      Keith Harten I think given the quantity of materials being used, theres not a huge excuse for it being much more than the larger stainless moras. I know its a slight steel upgrade. I think at $100 AUD it would be fair value. Mora robusts and bushcraft force/survival models go for about $60-70 bucks here. If it had a micarta or textured G10 handle, the current price might be a bit more fair.

    From an Australian perspective (mine, as I am an Aussie as well), the Garberg was made in direct response to suit the American fascination with batoning. I do not share the yank fascination with batoning with knives, use an axe. No knife, no matter how well built will eventually fail, and if you watch enough knife fail vids, what is the usual activity being done when the knife fails? (rhetorical, it is batoning)
    Gearberg cost in Australia is close to $150 posted (looked today 06/02/2017). For $90 I can get a Real Steel Bushcraft II D-2 with a scandi grind, full tang micarta handles with a good looking kydex sheath and tec-lok.
    Simple choice for me.

    • @CedricAda
      @CedricAda  7 років тому +2

      Orion I agree. The funny thing is Moras dont even have a high fail rate at batoning even with the stick/rat tail tang. I'll baton wood if I go ultralight camping, but generally just the one log to get some good flat surfaces. I do it to test knives for data points in videos, but then barely again once ny normal dirt time with the knife begins. I don't really mind what others do, as long as they know it might break their blade when they baton and dont complain *too* much. My boker vox rold snapped in two under very light batoning. I was disappointed but would still give it another go if one was around at a reasonable price.

    • @waveman0
      @waveman0 7 років тому +1

      I have seen all manner of knives fail batoning (on vids, the worst thing I did was badly roll an edge on a Condor Bushcraft Parang on hard wood) and agree, Mora's aren't renowned for failure, even when batoning.
      I am a tool heavy guy, large knife (at the moment a TOPS Power Eagle), small knife (currently Cold Steel Master Hunter san maiIII) and axe (currently a Gransfors Bruks small forest axe) plus pocket knife and multi tool at a minimum when venturing anywhere in the bush. I don't like relying on one knife and don't adhere to the one-knife-option for 'survival' knives.

    It is not "plastic handle" it is a very strong polymer. They have done quite a bit of development here with the sheath and all, it is a bit like the old Frost Laplander 115. www.equipos.cl/frosts/frosts/a_18.pdf. Now Mora only makes the 95 modell morakniv.se/produkter/lapplander-95/ , since it is popular with hunters. Making a bigger knife would make all them big blade happy foreigners glad but then it would not sell all that well in Scandinavia where people use an axe, Leiku, Scrama, Hukari or an Stromeng Ks8f or 9 or the Blackbear www.xxl.se/mackenzie-blackbear-kniv/p/1087432_1_style for chopping the last being the cheapest at 239:- SEK.

      In sure its very strong. It is just very hard and not as comfortable for repetitive cuts as other moras, and other companies knives in the same purpose of use. I just see the full tang yet shorter blade as a weird compromise - full tang isnt really nessescary on a shorter knife which wont be used for impact tasks, so why not make ita bit longer so it can chop, and even baton.
      Its like they tried to please the western full tang enthusiasts but still make it modest looking to seem credible for the tradtionalist carving crowd. And it might be one of those compromises that means its outclassed in both areas. Just my thoughts after a couple months of use :)

      yeah Ive seen some of their earlier slab handled scout knives and pinnedtang knives. I guess they mean this is the first one designed to be beaten on

    Nice review. I think the Garberg is off my list and perhaps the Strongarm is on the list.

    Just don't understand why anyone would need a full tang knife like this.. like whats the point lol? The Mora Black is 3/4 tang, no need for full tang anyway

      In my testing, this stuff is holding about as well as good 154cm. Good stuff indeed, especially on wood!

    I agree on most of said in the review. It's a little bit too short for an outdoor survival knife (seems to me more like an utility/kitchen knife), the handle is crap and the knife way to expensive. I rather bought myself the CS SRK

      Full Tang, upgraded sheath, better steel, thicker blade, larger knife, more durable. The only reason it started at that price was because of all the hype.
