Hight stall converter on the street! 4500 stall installation and road test

- High stall converter installed and road test in my 1968 Dodge Dart. My Dodge Dart needed this loose stall converter for drag racing and it is a 4500 stall installed in a dodge 727 torque flight transmission. This shows you what’s it like driving with a high stall converter in the street

Been driving a 'you can't drive that on the street' car for years. 5,000 converter, reverse manual, 430s with spool. 415ci sbc, 14-1cr, .710 lift solid roller etc etc. Besides normal maintenance I've only had to change valve springs, distributor gear and i wore out my fuel pump after roughly 10,000 street miles and dozens of passes. Practical? Hell fn no. Nothing practical about 3-4 mpg. But awesome? Hell yes. You only live once. Build your hotrod the way you want and enjoy it. Drive it. Race it. Love your car bro 👌
Hell ya brother! Preach on! Thanks for watching bro!
Yep...I used to have to brew up my own octane booster for my hotrods back in the late 1970's and 1980's....there was NO good gas anywhere around where I lived....but I had a hookup at the airport who would sell me 5gal cans of AV gas that I'd blend with the crap unleaded of the day and toluene and xylene and some other goodies....it ran my 12.6 and 13:1 motors just fine :D I'd have to go out and stash a couple cans of 'refill' gas around in strategic places just in case I got low...lol
Man....those were the days....freedom and speed!!!
not enough of all that left, anymore :(
Gear vendors help when you need it lol.
Your set up is what I want to do!!!
Stock interior floor shift or 4 speed.
And be able to run Fast class
Good cops. Started to sing that note on the freeway. Goosebumps. Have fun, Man👍🏻
I'm a Chevy guy, but lots of respect for your Dart. Nicely built. Even the cops like it lol!
Haha no doubt. Thanks for watching. Lots more on the channel!
"Tunnels,gotta love tunnels"
Don't we all!
This was a nice vid showing what a "loose converter" actually means on a street car.

I'm still a bit lost😡
Does a high stall mean it's mostly slipping until it gets to that rpm?
To use clutch terms, that's about what it's doing. The best way to think of it, is imagine two fans facing each other on a table. The air in between, is transmission fluid. Switch only one fan on (that would be the turbine connected to the crank), and it begins to blow air into the other fan.
If the fan is large and its blades are shaped a certain way, then it doesn't take very long before its blown enough air into the opposing fan for that fan to begin turning too....and soon at the same rate as the first fan. That would be a low stall speed torque converter.
Now imagine a table with a smaller first fan and its blades are shaped a certain way. It too throws air into a second fan, but its not a lot of air. The second fan's blades turn slowly, lazily...it takes longer for the first fan to send enough air into the second that the second fan is turning as fast as the first.
that's the problem of a hydraulic coupling. Where it shines is at idle at a stoplight...you don't have to disconnect it like you would a clutch, since the "first fan" (or turbine) isn't pushing enough "air" that the "Second fan" is going to override your foot on the brake pedal.

Gracias señor ✊😁
@@xmo552 De nada, glad to help. I have a switch pitch torque converter, which is a GM invention for the THM400's, and Hurst Olds really dropped the ball by not having them in their cars. You can swap from 1,800 RPM stall speed to 3,300 RPM. Its two converters in one, GM used it for their two speeds when they got real heavy with the cars. But its a kick ass street/strip technology...for the 1970's :)
One of those things that I was told as a teenage gear head by an experienced racer that has served me well is to install many redundant grounds. Thank you Willie.
It's funny how that works so well in a hot rod, but is a really baaaad idea in audio
Also beneficial when you wire up a trailer!
Good grounds = Less getting pulled over!
Great video Joe! Glad to see the new converter work well for you. The in car view looks great also. ✌👍👍
Thanks bro!
Boy that brought back some old memories.. I had a 68 Dart GT with a built 340.. Dyno'ed at 425 h.p. .. Had a lot of fun with that car.. Got lots of attention.. Thx for taking me along for the ride...
Nice subscribe for more!
This was a great video for me, I’ve never played with an automatic and didn’t really get the whole high stall thing. Literally see it in action here, total eye opener. Cheers
Wait till you see the new launches 🚀
Maniacally laughed, like I was at the wheel, as you ROARED through the tunnel. Well done! Great noise, etc. Very nice paint and color too.
Sounds great ! Looking forward to seeing a video at the track with that new converter. Best of luck !!
Coming soon!
This is why I love this channel you say your going to do something and you do it......4500 stall can't wait too see it launch at the track..... Being on the floor changing converter that was great...cops being cool that was nice! ... The new camera stand is really good I miss the hey I'm falling action thou!.... Yeah not so much.
Hahha right on bro. I’m done with falling!, for now anyhow. Thanks for watching I’m gunna use the new stand in next race day vid. Stay tunned!
Cool that you respond to fans of your work👍
I try to respond as much as I can. Sometime UA-cam is funny and I don’t see all the comments tho. Thanks for watching bro!
Love drag cars that aren't too chopped up, sick touch that you have a stock steering wheel!
Yep! 👍🏻👍🏻
I see you are from BC, I used to street race around the lower mainland before they opened Mission. I had a 69 Swinger 340 4 speed tunnel ram dual 4’s with 4.56 posi in 1981. I moved the leaf springs inboard, 6 cylinder torsion bars, electronic ignition, 73 K member with big bolt pattern rallye wheels. Your car brings back great memories.
Makes me feel warm and fuzzy..had a 69 340 Dart...you have a beautiful car...enjoy and have fun...

I can share an old trick for you that has worked many times for me over the years. First, get two long 3/8-16 bolts about 3-1/2" long. Next, cut off the top hex where the socket goes with a dremel tool or cut-off wheel. Next, place the two bolts in a vice and using a dremel cut-off blade, score two grooves into the top of the bolts about 1/8" or 5mm deep. Keep the score lines in the center of the bolt. Lastly, bevel the top of the bolts slightly with a grind-off wheel. Use these two bolts to thread into the back of the block as alignment dowels for the trans bell housing and finger tighten. After the trans is on and secured with two regular attachment bolts, remove the long bolts with a screw driver in the slots created by the dremel and save for another day in your tool box. This works for any auto trans install as long as the bolt threads match the block. Since most are 3/8-16, that is the number I provided. Take care and thanks for the continued updates!
Erick Miller Good one!
I did this on a Pontiac that kept cracking flexplates..got tired of pulling trans...finally figured out that the 301 bolts were accidentally put in instead of the 400 bolts...400 had wider heads..never cracked another one.
LOL,i use a similar thing to adjust the cowling on the HH65 Dolphin US Coast Guard helicopter, we use hardened bolts with heads cut off also to use as taps to clean out anchor nuts, use dremel to cut slot along threads to remove junk, taps are made of pot metal and break.hard to fix some of the anchor nuts depending on location.
We stock a LOT of regular slot or Allen head studs at a lot of the plants where I work, so I’ve just used those, but excellent tip. My cousins taught me that one when I was a teenager, I’d hate to even guess how many hours it’s saved me.
I do that to line up the oil pan, but use proper size all thread. You can temporarily use nuts to hold it up for you while you make sure the gasket and end seals are aligned properly
Really like the video man like the way you present everything broke it down nice and neat thanks bro
Great! Glad you like it. Lots more on my channel! Thanks for watching.
Mopar motors sound so rowdy when built properly. Love it
Nice ride brother, sounds awesome, even better when the police is cool👍
Have fun and be safe
I used to run 8" 5,000 on the street. Much like you just illustrated, the amount of stall was RPM dependent.
Little bit of throttle was maybe 3,000. WOT would be 4,500-5,000 depending on gear. Was a very high compression motor with a lot of cam. Only downside was MPG if you care about that kind of thing.
For sure! And who cares about gas mileage! They are on the wrong channel if that’s the case! Thanks for watching.
Everyone cares about that kind of thing but what can you do about it,,, add ram air?
Im looking to run either a 4,500 or 5,000 stall on my 4 cylinder. Got a 67mm turbo on an auto AWD. Damnit this video got me excited about this. Thanks man!
Turbo action 8" opal converter works well behind any combo! Know as a 3800 most of the time! But flashed 5200 behind a engined that needed it! & 3800 behind less power! I was so amazed wt a opal convert! Also it tightened up dwn the track & street!
Love your dart , had to subscribe especially since I recently purchased 68 dart from Oklahoma. 30 yrs ago I had 70 dart with 318 I installed with a Mopar guy and the whole time I had it I wanted 67 to 69 anyway , I heard you and Dylan maccool both say neutral fills up the convertor, did not know that . Love your content , backing out of garage etc all awesome keep vids coming !
Yeah Mopars dont charge the converter in park..I installed a Transgo shift kit that solves that problem.
Super nice car brother and sounds awesome....I changed out my converter from a 3600 to a 4500 and it picked up 4 tenths in the 1/8th and the engine was so much more free when driving around it wasn't in a bind at all it is just like yours while at driving speeds it revs so clean and holding the foot brake it will go to 4500 and not even pull on the car until I mat it and then it felt like I dropped a clutch on a stick car it's amazing how good they work when they're done right... awesome car brother can't wait to see it at track...
Right on bro! Thanks for watching check out the channel! That vid is over a year old! Lots of race vids on the channel
That thing's gonna be a rocket ship coming out of the hole now. As long as you can hook it! Awesome ride dude!
Hell ya brother. Thanks for watching
What I’ve learned over the years is big stall speed=big fricken trans cooler! Nicely done 👍
Thanks bro! Lots more on the channel!
Love the car. Perfect stall
That thing is radical!!!! love it Man
Like your posts man. glad your having so much fun too. I liked and subbed.
Right on bro! Thanks! More to come soon

Awesome vid .I just bought a new trans and a 3000 stall for my 78 GMC 4x4 (425 hp ls 5.7) been worried that I might be making a mistake cuz I drive the truck daily but after seeing this vid Im a little more confident that it will be fine..thanks
Excellent! Thanks for watching
Killa sound ! From Adelaide Australia 🤘🏻
Thanks for watching bro🇨🇦
Car looks and sounds awesome..4500 stall seems like the sweet spot for your setup of street cruising and some track time...Came across your channel 2 weeks ago and I’m locked in..100 % Mopar house with 3 challengers a ram 2500 and a Jeep.. Can’t wait to see the next time at the track good luck...
Hell ya brother! Thanks for watching
i'm diggen the new view from the center console. 11/10 visibility.
Cool it will stay!
85 El Camino with B&M supercharger. 3200 transking stall in turbo 400. Shear heaven at 30 Mph stomps. My C5 is jealous! Your Dart is Fine, nice build, ultra clean, I can sure appreciate the hours spent and lets not mention $!
Very nice ! I put my High block from the drag boat in my dart, just for kicks. But it really needed the High stall and short gears to utilize the power curve, it was all up top. It was late from the gate...but great in the straight.
Sounds nice thanks for watching lots more on the channel!
Sounds EFFING GREAT!😊
Sweet ride brotha...enjoy the hell out of it and live long!
Thanks bro! Lots more of her on the channel! Thanks for watching

Good mechanics ,good riding ,fun, fun .
Nice 😎!!!4500!! Damn!! Launch 🚀 like a Rocket !!!
Beautiful Dart!
Thanks bro! Lots more on the channel!
Beautiful car bro. My uncle bought a brand new black 1968 GTS with the 383/Torqueflite before he left for Vietnam in 1968. The day after he got it we went to the speed shop and put on Hooker headers, 24" Cherry Bomb glass-packs and this little 8 inch chrome Kal-Custom air cleaner. Back in the day it was unbeatable on the street.
👍🏻
"Tunnels.....Gotta love tunnels." You sounded like the kid who likes turtles -- I LIKE TURTLES.
Nice car man, it's good seeing people our age appreciating these classics & keeping them out of the crushers. I'll tune in for the next time you go testing.
I like turtles. Check out new vid to see how she runs. Thanks
Sounds like a cross between a CVT and my old SeaRay Pachanga cruising the James River.
I like.
Awesome Joe《☆》Kudos to you local popo for car appreciation🤠Good luck at the track Brother🤓👍🏾:*: Greetings from Florida my friend🤓🗣🔊☮✌👍🏾
👍🏻 thanks for watching
I have 2 68 HURST HEMI DARTS!
BUT LOVE ALL 68-70 MOPARS!
THEY WERE THE BEST LOOKING CARS OF THAT ERA.
I HAVE IN MY COLLECTION 68-70 ROADRUNNERS, GTX'S, CHARGERS, DARTS AND I WENT 71 ON MY CUDAS (4 HEADLIGHT&GILLED FENDERS), ALL BIG BLOCK & HEMI CARS!
BUT LOVE THEM ALL AND YOUR 68 DART 👍
Wow sounds like a great collection! Thanks for watching, more vids on the channel!

Found your channel by mistake. I’m in my 60s but when I was in high school I had a one year old 69 dart swinger 340. I paid $1700 for it had 20,000 miles. I can’t remember but I thought the GTS were all 383’s.
I Had 340-6pack heads on it JR racing headers the cam was the ZIP 510 I think it was a crane. I had the hurst ramrod shifter with a hemi clutch.I hung out with lots of older guys and one guy had a 68 GTS he put a 440 in it. We had a SSB automatic factory race car with a dual quad hemi. The guy that owned the gas station I worked at He
Had the wombat funny car Jim wemett. Wish I never got rid of that car.
Most guy wish they never sold there cars for sure. Thanks for watching
Beautiful DART!!!
Thanks! Sub to follow the build!
Badass ride!! Sounds awesome!!

Simpsons Speed Shop already did!!
👍🏻 hell ya brother
With a 4500 stall street driving will be almost like driving a stick with a slipping clutch, the difference is at 4500 there is nothing but grab no slip and that was the goal to get peak power to the 60 foot launch so Good Job on the modification, i am going to say you may in the future find that with the right engine modifications coming that a 4500 may be too high once HP has increased and everyone seeks more HP , great video cant wait to see a launch and see how it goes, keep up the great video's my friend and your passion.
Hey thanks for watching and good input. I will always match stall with engine and car combo. This is my 4th converter! Tho one only lasted one week! Stay tuned for the next race day vid!
Your car is sweet !! the cop liked it too!!
Brother has a 68 dart just like that ,running a B1 MOTOR ,5000 Stall CONVERTER,Darts nice looking cars
I love the darts and your car is very nice looking and clean.

What an absolutely beautiful Dart! Nice job. Bet all your viewers are jealous, I know I am.

Good video dood. Love the cops! Brilliant!

I love Lukas products because they actually work! No lie!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Nice to ride around with ya 💯 %
Sounds good. A loose converter and some super trap 44s sound awesome.
ATI Super F Sythetic Type F. For those questioning 4500 stall on the street, as long as the converter is paired/made for your combo, it works just fine. I roll a 9.5in Dynamic 4500 w/3.91 and 26in tire in AZ and drive year round. 1.60 60ft and can still cruise 65mph highway. Get the biggest trans cooler you can and the best fluid possible.
@Grumpy468 Not sure how one would measure that, but with a well engineered combo, the car drives around like it does not even have a converter at all. Key is light car (3150*), very fast timing curve, and a well sorted afr (in this case holley efi w/timing control and considerable tuning time. Hit it in any gear, and there is 4500-4600 instantly depending on tire size.
Like your video that's cool that you can get on out and hang out with some of your Mopar friends been doing a lot of that here in Michigan Port Huron love your Dart
Right on bro. Thanks for watching
cool channel....beautiful Dart. I have a 5200 rpm stall converter in my hotrod that I drive on the street.
Sounds sweet bro! Thanks for watching
Saw the BC plate and was like “cool, he’s from BC but I’m sure that’s probably in Van..” Then I saw the 7/11 and thought that intersection looked familiar! I’ll keep an eye out for your car;) Thumbs up from Victoria.
👍🏻
Thats right giving props to the chevy's. Nice car by the way, my 65 impala ss drives the same with a 3000 stall
I do love them all! Stay tuned for more.
Good vid man!
The thing I love about man-well trans mixers is I don't need to remove the trans ....I don't even need to shut the engine off to change what the car stalls at. Yeah it's harder and lest consistent to launch but if your wanting 60 ft times go look at the guys doing A/a gassers, running 4 speeds....10,000 rpm clutch dumps, wheels up.
Nice ride my brother! 68 Dart here
👍🏻
beautiful !!

Back when...97-ish. I ran a nice 283, 57 Chevy with a 4000 on the street. Dang it was fun!!
👍🏻
Got to love a dodge dart,,,my first car was a 67 charger second 70 challenger and third 73 charger SE,,, l had some bad ass cars,,,if i only knew what they would be worth now,,,,have 8 classic cars waiting to restore,,,just did 45 dodge pickup,
👍🏻 sounds cool
Nice car dude
Love this, no harm, no foul. Driving an amazingly fast car on the street, cop pulls up admires and acknowledges the work. Here in Australia, you fart in your own stock car and the cops start pulling you over and defect you for anything and everything.
Haha yep lucky he was a good cop! Thanks for watching. Lots more on the channel!
Man that Dart looks clean underneath .... I have a 68 as well but mines a Ragtop
Darts optioned with the 383 Wedge & a Hemi-4speed we’re fast as fuck, even with that boat anchor of a iron big block.
I had a friend, Ken, in high school who had a ‘68 GTS in B-5 blue with white Dart side stripes, manual steering & breaks.
It may not have been the most expensive car a school but it was definitely the coolest.
Saw the BC plate! Shout out from Vancouver Lower Mainland
Hell ya brother. I’m in vic
I love the style of car is one of the prettiest they made back in the days I think it's a 67 or 68
