This tutorial will shows you -especially those adults new to junk journal crafting, scrap-booking and other paper crafts - how to get natural looking torn papers, tears and ripped paper effect for your crafting projects. Two ways are demonstrated, as well as a walk through of how I made my own deckle edge, tear, rip ruler.
Please BE CAREFUL when using cutting knives to carve out grooves in ruler.
In Part 2 I will walk you through my entire carving process for a tear ruler from start to finish and how to do it safely.

Absolutely BRILLIANT!! Only got halfway through this video, had to pause it and make one immediately! One side I made with deeper gouges and the other side more gentle. I took a cheap emery board nail file and got rid of the splintery edges because for sure I would get myself a sliver in the finger. It works beautifully! I’ll pick up more wooden rulers and make up a nice selection😀.Thank you for sharing such a fantastic idea🤩

This is incredible! I never would have come up with idea! I have a few different tear rulers & they aggravate me for various reasons, some are too deep & waste so much paper & look silly on journal-sized paper. Others are so regular that it hardly looks like like anything has been torn. One is just so sharp & jagged that it’s hard to work with! So I think it would be nice to have a few handmade ones that are similar, but not identical! This is a wonderful tutorial & I look forward to more! The rulers seem to be inexpensive where I live, and so I have made a few with different sorts of grooves, leaving a variety of effects. They are the best tools I own and so inexpensive. XX

Hi that was interesting. Year's ago I had plastic deco rulers but never used them so they went😯 I going to be sewing for a while Christmas presents. But will try and fit I some collage now and then. I like making tag pockets. 😊

Oh my! I purchased the WRMK, 3 pack... not happy with them, don't really use them. Im going to do this instead, this is genius, thank you!😊
Hi Emma, thank you so much. I am so happy this tutorial can help you out. And what is great is you can make your grooves as small or as deep as you wish and you can make the grooves as natural looking tears too. I now have a set of 7 and some have the tear grooves on both sides, it allows for lots of variations.

A mans pocket knife would be a safer and more effective tool to use to make the rulers, great idea.. ♥️❤️

What kind of paper does this work on? If card stock what weight???
Hi Shirley, the paper used if I remember correctly was cardstock about 180 to 200 or maybe even 250 approx gsm. You may need Google to convert that for you if you are using pounds. But you can use any paper weight. I use this tear ruler with plain printer paper that is 80gsm and still get terrific results. I hope that helps.

Does it matter what kind of paper is used?
HI Olivia, thanks for your question. You can use whatever papers you like. The heavier the paper the more challenging to rip but if you take your time it will work fine. The lighter the paper the easier to rip. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
