    Where I live there are no wooden rulers, but thin plastic rulers are in abundance. I donned my safety glasses and snipped the edges of the plastic ruler with my small wire cutters. I love the result and it took a few minutes to accomplish. Thank you so much for your inspiration!!!

    Thank you so very much for this tutorial. I have been wanting a paper tearing ruler, but the cost is more than I am willing to pay. Now, because of your tutorial, I will be able to make a few of my own with little cost. Thank you, again.

    Hey Jaef. I actually tried this and made one out of a paint stir stick cause I don't have a plain wooden ruler yet. It did split some like your one ruler but I got it to work. Love this idea. Works great. Sharon

      Paying for specialized tools is especially painful when you aren't committed to using them more than a few times. I'm focusing on rolled paper beads right now and am grateful for ideas like these tearing sticks and for others on how to make your own bead rollers. This has not saved me money, because I would not have bought the tools, but now I can make them and do a better job on the relatively small number of beads I'll make.

      Hi Abigail, I tried your idea on my last cheap wooden ruler that I have in my stash, but I didn't notice much difference. In fact, I found it harder to carve with section of ruler that had soaked in very hot water for about 5 minutes. Maybe it was the type of ruler I was using, but for me, soaking it in hot water, didn't work. Maybe it might for you. Please let me know if it does. Thanks. Wishing you a lovely day.

    I’ve learned so much from you already, I just learned about you yesterday, from Gayle Agostinelli, one of my favorite you tubers. Watching you do this has given me an idea, but maybe you would like to try it. You are familiar with the little metal cutters placed inside your aluminum foil and wax paper boxes, right? Next time you empty the box, instead of throwing it away, my idea is to remove the metal cutting edge and mar it with metal snips. It seems like it would work. Perhaps it could somehow be attached to the edge of a wooden ruler and viola! If you try it, let me know.
    Another idea I have for the empty boxes is to use them for the rolls of glassine paper I found at the art supply store. And for the masking paper found at Home Depot. I’m anxious to try both of these ideas. Not that I don’t love yours!!! I do and plan to do exactly that with a cheap yardstick....thank you for so freely sharing your great ideas and techniques! *hugs*

      Hi Sue, so wonderful to have you visit my channel via the gorgeous Gayle, thank you so much. I really love your idea about using the metal serrated edges from the boxes you mentioned. I wonder if using a serrated knife to make initial cuts before using the cutter would help. Or a file after the cuts to deepen and smooth them.

    New subscriber here =) I really like your tutorials! Carving my own tearing ruler has never crossed my mind, but now I will definitely give it a go =) About the splinters - could it be that rulers mostly are made from thinner, cheaper material (maybe offcuts from making something else in industry.At least here in Sweden they make those wooden foldable measuring-thingies in that way)? Just got me thinking since I have worked with thin wood that was very hard to even cut in to (had to use tools for metal or electric machines etc,). Best wishes from Sweden! Looking forward to more nice tutorials =)

    What kind of paper are you using? If it’s card stock, what weight?

    • @medievalmirage
      @medievalmirage  2 роки тому

      Hi Shirley, the paper used if I remember correctly was cardstock about 180 to 200 or maybe even 250 approx gsm. You may need Google to convert that for you if you are using pounds. But you can use any paper weight. I use this tear ruler with plain printer paper that is 80gsm and still get terrific results. I hope that helps.
