In this video I explain the three things Tyson Mcguffin does to generate insane power on his serves. Power and spin come from following the three steps of loading, uncoiling, and lag! Hit a more powerful serve with this short turtorial!

If you do more how-to-serve videos, please make sure the video camera can see your legs and feet! In this video, you were cut off above the knees, so there was no visual component for all of your coaching about foot placement, legs, coiling/uncoiling, etc. Sometimes your paddle was cut off, too. For me it’s always super-helpful to be able to see all of what is being talked about.
Thanks for your videos!
From the angle you can’t see my head and feet at the same time since the back fence is so close. I have a better video camera now though!
Great content for a newbie looking to go from 3.5 to higher. L:ove this and your corkscrew vid. Thanks!
So much of this reminds me of what I taught kids about hitting a baseball. The best cue I found for what you are calling "lag" was to tell the kids that to pretend the "knob" of the bat is a flashlight and you want to shine it on the ball as long as possible.
Awesome! Thats a super helpful tip!
Perfect, I watched another teacher describe the same 'lag' technique as 'loose' wrist. I tried that and drammatically increased seve speed. You give a good detailed description for every step. Thank You!
Glad it was helpful! More to come :)
Your videos are terrific. This morning, I spent hours watching them. I have definitely subscribed. My only suggestion: have the camera focused more on your feet and paddle contact rather than the trees and the sky. But all in all, you are a great teacher, and I know what I am talking about because I spent much of my career as a Special education teacher.
Great suggestion! Thanks for the tip and the feedback ❤️
I've been studying the serve and your video does a great job of explaining everything I have learned and observed. Thanks!
Great to hear!
@pickleballplaybook where fo u teach at?
So basically a heavy tennis forehand...? Coming from a tennis background, I just started playing pickleball, and I am LOVING it !! Thank you !!
Pretty much! Glad you’re loving it!
Absolutely love this explanation as I have gone back and forth with open and closed serves. The dominant eye tip is amazing. Great video
Wonderful! Thanks for the feedback!
That dominant eye test is used in determining which eye to aim a rifle or hand gun with too
Enjoy your videos. I'm a lefty. Really haven't found any videos that approuch the game from a left handed players point of view. Input on court strategy for a lefty/righty team would come in handy. My partners have a harder time adjusting since I' m used to playing with righty's but they don't usueally play with a lefty. Also, the Slinger bag machine is on back order. Noticed that in your videos you have several differant ones. You wouldn't know where I might could pick up a used one?
Noted!
As for the slinger, it will be off back order by the end of next week
Super useful info, and a great teaching style. thanks
Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate it
Excellent explanation!
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent training material, thank you
You're very welcome!
As always, your videos are straightforward and super informative. Are your feet airborne and moving into the court at any part during this process or is that a foot fault in pickleball. Appreciate the tremendous effort you put into your videos and hope channel explodes in 24. Happy New Year!
Thanks a ton!! If you slow Mo it, my right foot is down at the point of contact 👟
This is high level stuff. Love it. On the flip side, how can one return such a hard serve? It may worth the time to film a video on this? I'd like to slice it, but sometimes it gets too short; sometimes it goes out.
Noted! There’s some other awesome UA-cam pickleball coaches that have created tons of videos on the return. Check out that pickleball guy and Zane Navartil
Quick question. What ball machine do you like the best. I see the Titan most recently. You have used Sling. I have the spin shot and spend too much time adjusting settings.
Titans king. Slinger is great for its price!
Not a tiny dog 😂
Great video !
Thanks for watching!
Love, love, love Tyson, but his serve is very questionable. It has been discussed to do drop serves only because the serves that are hit up high are such a problem in PPA,MPL and tournaments etc. Referees have a hard time telling where your naval is as you swing because of all the movement. I have asked refs off court and most say that it's too difficult to judge unless its blatantly obvious like the match recently where Tyson called out Collin Johns for hitting it so high and the ref then called it but then Collin kept calling all of Tysons after that.
I actually didn’t see that but that’s hilarious he complained about Collins serve. If you have the link send it!
I don't, I watched it on Amazon I believe, but it was recent within the last month or so.@@pickleballplaybook
I come from Tennis and very new to Pickle but it's obvious to me that there should be a rule change to only do drop serves as they do in Padel in order to negate this serving uncertainty. PS. Great video.
Some of his serves have to be illegal since all of them are borderline
Drop serve only consideration failed for 2024's rules changes. They said volley serves have always been part of pickleball and a ref's difficulty in determining serve legality doesn't warrant a rule change.
You should give up hope on volley serves becoming illegal lol
Switched to open stance, way more consistent for me. However I find myself lunging in forward a little and taking a step to get power.
Any suggestions?
That’s what you should be doing 👍 all the wait on your dominate foot as your non dominant rotates behind you 🙌
Great video, can analyze Quang Duong's serve next? He has a crazy fast serve too
I'll check it out! His serve is insane!!
Also what serve do you now use the most. Power topspin, the screwball or the new one with the eastern grip that has the extreme topspin.
Semi western grip one 50% of the time and then been using the Brascia serve a lot. Video coming soon
@@pickleballplaybook haven’t heard of that one. I can see how difficult serves that produce weak returns can flip points quickly even in double and more so singles. I started a little over 2 years ago and was up to 3.5. Last year was winning at 4.0 and now starting to medal at 4.5. Goal is to medal a few times at 4.5 and get to 5.0 by this time next year. I would consider a 3 day clinic if you know of any?
That’s all good stuff! Keep up the good work 🙌. We don’t know of any
Great, detailed explanation, thank you! The follow through should end near your left ear? Also, what type of mic and camera are you using? Mic sounds great. Good job! 👍👍
That is correct! Finish around ear or hug around your shoulder.
Mic is the RØDE Wireless go II 👇

Any suggestions on how keep a loose arm and keep a stable wrist?
Seems like when I get real loose, my wrist breaks. On a one to ten what is your grip pressure?
Hey Mike, happy to help!
So if you relax your wrist in day to day life it will be in alignment with your hand.
That being said, by the time you make contact with the ball your wrist will be completely relaxed and in alignment with your hand as you brush up the back side of the ball and tap your arm around your neck.
So honestly don’t even think about it and shut off that part of your brain that wants to overanalyze everything. (The best way to shut it off is to think “spaghetti”) and I’m not even kidding.
Hopefully that helps!
If you watch Tyson McGuffin in slo-mo, or even in real-time, you can see he contacts the ball with his paddle and gives it spin as he releases it, which is definitely illegal.
🤔
Great video. You should always wear a mic. Especially if you're going to be turning your back on the camera. Great job!
Thanks for the tip! My mic wasn’t on the entire time and I didn’t find out until after haha. It’s actually on my chest just off
What's the microphone you are using for your videos? It's very clear.
amzn.to/3UcPp7w
Very good mic!
The one thing I was missing was using my legs as a spring.
After practicing this, my friends and I noticed an increase of power in my serves.
Proper body mechanics and awareness all contribute to your game!!!
💯! Thanks
Good video, thanks
Glad you liked it!
"his serve is 100% legal"
i slow mo his serve: uh, nope.
Haha what about it isn’t?
@@pickleballplaybook I don't have any other video about Tyson's serve so I just use your video clip at 9:40. Play it in slow motion 0.25x, there are two frames, right before and right after the paddle hit the ball. In both frames, the balls are both above his "waist" or "belly button". It is so hard to believe his actual hitting point is below his waist. By the way, good video. Your demonstration towards the end is definitely below the waist. A lot of my friends are coming from tennis and the swing motion + wrist position easily cause the wrist below the paddle head when the paddle hits the ball. That is how the tennis swing generates the heavy top spin at a relatively high ball like self toss.
@@pickleballplaybook haha what PurpleFrogHigh5 said. He definitely contacts the ball above his waist.
Do you know the rules? lol
I’m filming from above him. Keep that in mind I how you’re assuming it’s above his waist (belly button) 👍
Tyson's serve is indeed 100% legal 75% of the time.
😂
What is the angle of your paddle when you contact the ball?
Probably between 65 and 90
Love this paddle. Been using it for a month. I’ve heard rumors that it’s banned in sanctioned tournaments. That true?
It’s not banned. This video explains New Pickleball Rules for 2024!
ua-cam.com/video/o0CxcuDVBs8/v-deo.html
Good info but wiuld love to see your stance from your feet up. Next tine, more focusing on your stance and a bit less if the sky. Thanks!
Noted!
Might you be using an Eastern or Semi-Western grip on your serve?
Eastern forehand !
Cool, thx!
I watched a few of Tyson's serves in slow-mo, and the contact point was closer to nipple than navel.
Hahahahaha
With my power serve, I'm hitting heavy top that barely clears the net and even then the ball barely lands in bounds. Yet it doesn't look that fast. How could I hit it any harder? I do have lag and a loose wrist, so that part of my technique is already solid. When I want to hit it even harder, I have to back up a meter behind the service line or my line drives flies long.
I’d have to see your serve. Dm me on instagram with a short video 👍
Great video
Thanks for the visit!
I am guessing that Selkirk would not be too keen on sponsoring a video that said Tyson's serve was illegal.
Haha Tyson’s not with Selkirk anymore. So I don’t think they’d have a problem with it
Now the release point is hip high, McDuffies serve would be illegal. Drop serve would work though from hip high.
Mcguffin*
It was my I pad auto correct, I spelt it right originally, sent it ,just didn’t correct it. That rule was just changed …am I right?
Just in the pros 👍
Tyson is CLEARLY hitting the ball above his waist line in your example. That's illegal. Good Lord, how do you not know that?
😂 this man is fire up!! I love it bro
@@pickleballplaybook ah, yes. Avoiding the facts. Figures. Lol 🤣
Pet a small dog. Hhmmm, maybe this is the paddle position I have been missing. We will see tomorrow.
Booyah! Good luck
A+ on your serve demonstration near the end of the video. You clearly appear to be hitting with a slightly upward motion, below your waist with the paddle slightly below your wrist. Unfortunately an F for Tyson McGuffin’s serve around the 9:23 mark and numerous other times. . I’ve paused his serve around contact numerous times on different occasions and consistently see that he only passes two of the three requirements of the serve. His wrist IS NOT ABOVE THE ENTIRE PADDLE when he makes contact. Although technically two out of three would be a D, since it fails to be legal with the failure of the the third requirement he unfortunately gets an F. 😕
I avoid serving this way because I don’t want any question on whether my serve is legal or not when I win multiple free points on my serve. Whenever I serve like this I use the drop serve so there’s no controversy.
Excellent channel with great videos shared with us. Keep up the good work!!
Yeah he’s as close as it gets. Thats for sure!
His wrist does not have to be above THE ENTIRE PADDLE.
As I understand it. Your wrist has to be above the highest edge of the paddle face. That would make it above the entire paddle face.
@@tomcody8184 The highest point of the paddle head must
not be above the highest part of the wrist.
Most of the times when I see the serve, it looks illegal no? idk about you saying it's 100% legal. I think a video doing slow mo on this serve, along with commentary and lines is needed. Better Pickleball "Pickleball Rules-Were Those LEGAL Pickleball Serves?" at the 4:15 mark is an example of what I'd like to see on this video analyzing the serve. Great that it's powerful, but if not legal; what's the point.
💪🙌 it can sneakily go above the wrist sometimes but for the majority it is legal when done properly!
This is like golf, create lag and do not flip.
True!
It seems like this video has a lot of good information, but unfortunately we can't see your feet or legs or even your waist. I'd love to see this again with a lower camera angle!

Half of it i couldnt hear as your back was alwaysturned to the microphone.plus you should be haveing a full view of your body.
🔥🙌🙌
But Tyson really isn’t coiling that much. Most power is coming from arm and hand speed.
Watch his front shoulder. Tons of coil!
You need to seriously adjust your camera so we can see your whole body when you explain the stance. Your camera shows lots of sky but not below your waist. Otherwise your video is useless.
You got it Judy!
I can hit it way harder than him. He actually does not get very good core rotation or folllow through.
Amazing. I heard your serve is the fastest in the universe!!! Love it man
@@pickleballplaybook get accused of illegal serve all the time, but people don’t know the actual rule. Taking the advantage returners have away has been key to help me win as I transition from tennis.
Looks illegal. So frustrating playing against guys and gals who cheat (knowingly or unknowing) Please go to drop serve. You’re doing your viewers a disservice.
Drop serve should be the only serve. Volley serve should be illegal. Why do you think keeping a volley serve is the way to go? You’re doing yourself a disservice
Too much talk, very bad 👎👎👎
❤️ will work on this!
no secret - Mcguffins serve is completely illegal - 2 things, the top of the paddle is above his wrist on contact, and he's hitting it above his waist. So yeah - if you need to cheat to make yourself think you are a great player - go ahead - do it like he does!
🤔 maybe. But I don’t think so
