As an owner of the production version of this card I can confirm that the caps on the back are now in a x2 + x4 config. Also this card seems to oc pretty well. I was able to get a +190core/+1000mem pretty easily putting clock speeds in the 2050-2080 area. Heaven bench mark 2560x1440p max settings scored a 3738 with an avg frame rate of 148. Approximately a 20fps jump compared to my old 2080ti.
Ultimately doesn't seem to matter. I have my card on water now and though it won't even break 50c in winter months the clocks STILL eventually drop to the 1925mhz range after awhile under load Which is fine honestly. You'd be VERY hard pressed to notice the difference between 1800mhz vs 2000mhz gcore (without active monitoring -- in which case you may get 2 or 3 additional frames when the card is under full load)

EVGA has always been super cool about warranty claims even if the sticker is removed. I removed mine on my 1080 ti SC2 because I swapped thermal pads and thermal paste after 3 years of use. Then not long after that, the card started stuttering a lot and I shared everything I did and the procedure I went through and even still they completely honored a replacement without any hassle. Even though there might have been something on my part that accidentally caused the card to not perform right, I don't know, because temps were better after replacing everything. But either way they have had the best customer service out of any other component manufacturer from my experience. I'm not always the biggest fan of aesthetics on their GPUs, but I'll still go with them because of their customer service.
Doesn't really matter after the new update. Theoretically a mix of SP Cap and MLCC arrays is ideal, but, after the latest driver we're not seeing the crashing anyway, so it wasn't really a purely hardware issue.
Yeah, Steve mentioned this in a previous video. He said that EVGA contacted him and let him know that they'd found issues with the 6x big cap setup and pre-production testing (which Nvidia gave them next to not time to do), and had changed to a 2x and 4x setup (iirc) for production.
@@JB-xl2jc Nobody said it was purely hardware. In saying that, i don't see any reason 'having a mix' would be ideal when we know the 10x of the smaller ones is better for avoiding electrical noise. Nice to see a card other than the Strix with a fan header for case/rad fans on it. EVGA makes quality boards and coolers. Yet, every single RTX iteration of theirs felt like a contest to see if could design the ugliest card of the generation. Why are they so reluctant to make a classic rectangular box?
My EVGA RTX 2060 and 2060 KO just look boring to me. Which is fine. Chose a case with no window so I can’t see them anyway (I just looked at a picture I took of them - to confirm my memories of them).
"Boss, gamers and enthusiasts are really into customisation these days - you know, all the RGB and stuff - and they're willing to pay a premium for an attractive design." Yes. Let's put red accents on it. And make them cheap, too. Cheap and plastic. And red. Put them on the ends and on the backplate, you know, to make sure they can't be hidden.
YES! I just got this card 2 days ago (waited in line on the 17th at my local store and didn't get one but was 9th preorder, perks of living downtown near a major retailer). Mine has 2 MLCCs in the middle though.
@Gamers Nexus I find an easy and clean way to remove dried paste is to use an ifixit nylon spudger and just carefully scrape it off then wipe it down with isopropyl. It's much cleaner and doesn't smear paste everywhere.
@Bob Dole Was this one of the bad ones? I haven't really followed all of it, I thought it was one the ones Steve uses for the RIP overclocking competition
While I enjoy the extensive coverage on products that I can't buy right now (there are no cards), I would really appriciate the Lian Li AiO review you guys promised. Because that's Something that I actually can and would buy right now.
Steve, you _can_ test EVGA's fan placement! Mount a Raijentek Morpheus on that thing and make a couple of custom metal mounts to fasten the fans on. Yeah, they're clippedon conventinally butt I would not imagine this to be a problem if you're creative with the mounting.
The GPU thermal paste is not a grease, it is a phase change material (PCM). It may seem dry at room temperature, but when heated it will "phase change" and flow allowing for improved thermal performance.
Steve, you should do a dumbed down step-by-step PC build with the new upcoming RTX 3070 and Ryzen 5900X for people trying to reach like 240+ fps at 1440P... For like no specific reason, just looking out for *you* best buddy!! 😊
So EVGA has been promising people will be able to swap out the red plastic, but it turns out its all molded in and the entire shroud would have to be replaced. I'd bet money on a swap will never happen.
I feel like that one bolt screw is a "fuck you" screw. It means that if you take the backplate off, you HAVE to continue disassembling to properly reassemble it. It means that putting thermal pads under the backplate goes from a quick few screws and reassemble to an "oh boy, let me disassemble the whole thing just to put it back together" job.
He said that it is normal for it to do that at random times. If you are worried about them breathing it in he also said that it's fine since the is room is ventilated 24/7.
This is a reviewer model that has the different capacitors, they later added one "better" one for Production Models... is it possible production models also have the thermal pads under the backplate? When we never got a review on the card but we get a tear-down video, yeeeeeeeeeeeet I want a full review on this card Steve, c'mon now :-P I already have one on the way (will be here Tuesday), I want to see what you guys got out of yours OC & performance wise :(
If you want to go hardcore OC with liquid Nitrogen I would change thos Caps to MCCs - Yes I know the software update fixed the crashes but the MCCs are still better for really high frequencies and stability which you may reach if you go *that* hardcore on OC
I was wondering this, because on EVGAs website it looks like newer models of the FTW3 may have made this switch? At least according to the pictures on the site

Being someone who fixes electronics it can streamline diagnostics to know if someone else has been inside of a device before. If a device has been opened, there are many more things that have to be taken into consideration and specifically looked for, mainly accidentally knocked off caps, damaged connectors, drilled holes in the PCB where there shouldn't be holes and so on.

Really? I think it looks great! See how they have a provision for SMD of TH capacitors and inductors? That's pretty cool. You can also see the lines for the kelvin type current sensing on the inductors on the back. There's also a lot of really nice 45 degree components on the back near the slot. Don't get me wrong: the FE card looks nice, especially with all the VRM output capacitors on the back, but it's not perfect.
Eh, personally I think this card looks nicer than the FE when actually inside a case. The FE looks weird in a build unless the build is built around the card.
If you pay 700 or 1500 dollars for something, the performance should be the first concern, but that doesn't mean how it looks becomes irrelevant especially when that horrendous red outline would conflict with a lot people's builds.
Agreed. and what most people don't realize is once you put it in a case with even a mild tint on your window you dont' even see the red. That and these cards are so long that the "clown frown" is usually so close to your front fans that you can't even see it. I am looking at this card in my case right now and I can't even see the red accents unless i have sunlight going right into my case.
Be awesome to see a full tear down of the more popular cards, so a msi, asus and gigabyte. And really compare any differences cooling, and pasting and so forth.

The red clown smile was supposedly inspired by the lit red led tail light from a McLaren P1 supercar. I guess it started off in concept as a rgb light, and cost/tech issues devolved it to be the loved bit of red plastic we know today :)

Lol was just watching this video again and forgot I left this comment. I did manage to get this GPU btw. Got it the day after I got my 5900X from Microcenter on launch day. It's been an absolute beast so far, no complaints. I was also one of the first people to get it with the black accents instead of the red ones. Hope you all manage to get whatever PC hardware you're looking to get!
This is the best looking 3080 on the market by far. The RGB strip is perfect.
FE > Literally any AIB design.
@@svn5994 Strongly disagree. The FE edition is by far the ugliest design imo. It's also objectively worse, with bad temperatures.

spent so long waiting to hear which size bit I should use, and figured PH00 worked fine. Then we get to taking the I/O cover off, and THEN Steve tells me. LMAO well I'm glad I didn't strip anything.
They should have just made the different colors a cap over the red.
They should sell paint lol
I back ordered a 3090 FTW3 Ultra after running out of VRAM frequently on my 2080 Ti (AI modeling with Keras), so I’m very happy to see this content if I have to do maintenance later on! Thank you GN!
That gpu shroud looks like a McDonald's Reference Design.

EVGA, masters of making cards look good from every angle except from the front, every generation.
Lipstick on a pig.
11:19 I really like it when Nitry chimes in during vids....really knows how to break things down for people still learning, like myself.
EVGA makes quality boards and coolers. Yet, every single RTX iteration of theirs felt like a contest to see if could design the ugliest card of the generation. Why are they so reluctant to make a classic rectangular box?
It must have something to do with cost reduction. EVGA sell only NVIDIA and they are pretty niche.
Ihaven0thing Notevenaname same
The eagle one if far uglier, and look like a toy
EVGA cuts corners to save money even on premium cards.
My EVGA RTX 2060 and 2060 KO just look boring to me. Which is fine. Chose a case with no window so I can’t see them anyway (I just looked at a picture I took of them - to confirm my memories of them).
That's it. The best thumbnail you've ever produced.
Is no one going to talk about the demon that was just exorcised from that LN2 tank?
it's normal behavior for cryogenic tanks. if you aren't using the gas inside, it build up pressure and needs to vent occasionally.
@@wyattroncin941 also it have happen so many times that now nobody talks.

Yeah. That red trim just constantly reminds me of the old 60s TV batmobile. Pretty much equal parts a good and bad thing.
Did Joe run off with the 3090? That was pretty random and funny.
I don’t why, maybe it’s that I’m in my dark bedroom at 4am, but that hand coming out of nowhere really spooked me 😂
"Boss, gamers and enthusiasts are really into customisation these days - you know, all the RGB and stuff - and they're willing to pay a premium for an attractive design."
Yes. Let's put red accents on it. And make them cheap, too. Cheap and plastic. And red. Put them on the ends and on the backplate, you know, to make sure they can't be hidden.
Thats what Jayz says lol
YES! I just got this card 2 days ago (waited in line on the 17th at my local store and didn't get one but was 9th preorder, perks of living downtown near a major retailer). Mine has 2 MLCCs in the middle though.
11:18 the tank HATES that red thing too it seems
For anyone seriously considering parting with their cards because of the red trim, let me know. I'll be happy to take it off your hands.
@Gamers Nexus I find an easy and clean way to remove dried paste is to use an ifixit nylon spudger and just carefully scrape it off then wipe it down with isopropyl. It's much cleaner and doesn't smear paste everywhere.
The person at EVGA that put the red clown lips on the shroud -> #FeelsBadMan
eh it's not that bad. If only people cares this much about things that actually matter
@@froot2912 You have my highest sympathy
You should always livestream. I don't want to miss the moment when that hydrogen tank goes KABOOM!
EVGA cards are usually well engineered, and this seems to be no exception, but damn that shroud is ugly.
@humandxp Jeez dude. What did Evga do to you? Lol.
@Bob Dole Was this one of the bad ones? I haven't really followed all of it, I thought it was one the ones Steve uses for the RIP overclocking competition
@humandxp They're about at the same level as other Taiwanese AIBs, always were. There's nothing wrong with that.
@Bob Dole You don't know what you're talking about.
While I enjoy the extensive coverage on products that I can't buy right now (there are no cards), I would really appriciate the Lian Li AiO review you guys promised. Because that's Something that I actually can and would buy right now.
Sharpie that red line on the back. Cant believe they did that.
Steve, you _can_ test EVGA's fan placement! Mount a Raijentek Morpheus on that thing and make a couple of custom metal mounts to fasten the fans on. Yeah, they're clippedon conventinally butt I would not imagine this to be a problem if you're creative with the mounting.

i was waiting for this AF. Mi FTW3 comes in 3-4 days.... omg. I hope everything its gonna be ok with it. GREAT work, as alñways.
This card looks like a normal card which was left on the dashboard of a car cooking in the sun for a month
The GPU thermal paste is not a grease, it is a phase change material (PCM). It may seem dry at room temperature, but when heated it will "phase change" and flow allowing for improved thermal performance.
Mmm, some soothing instruction manuals that means I won’t break anything.... Hopefully.
Joe was there, not only as a nitrogen ghost. Looking forward to LN2 3090 SLI video, he was there for a reason.
Steve, did EVGA mention anything about the FTW3's Red Light of Death? The issue seems to be quite prominent with no proper explanation.
Thought it was always a cover to go over not a swap
I feel like that one bolt screw is a "fuck you" screw. It means that if you take the backplate off, you HAVE to continue disassembling to properly reassemble it. It means that putting thermal pads under the backplate goes from a quick few screws and reassemble to an "oh boy, let me disassemble the whole thing just to put it back together" job.
Isn't Steve worried about his LN2 tank exhausting all of a sudden when he's not at the office? Like at 11:20
He said that it is normal for it to do that at random times. If you are worried about them breathing it in he also said that it's fine since the is room is ventilated 24/7.
that shit scared me awake lol, was nodding off to Steve's soft voice

When we never got a review on the card but we get a tear-down video, yeeeeeeeeeeeet
I want a full review on this card Steve, c'mon now :-P I already have one on the way (will be here Tuesday), I want to see what you guys got out of yours OC & performance wise :(
Now are you going to watch the video and read the description?
Thank you Steve and Team. 🏁🎉

I know it isn't related to this card. But I was able to get a Gigabyte RTX 3080 OC card in the top 100 (#80) for i7-10700k/RTX 3080 in Time Spy and Port Royal. I was able to tweak the core clock to +125 and +525 mem. Obviously limiting factors were power/wattage. Being someone who fixes electronics it can streamline diagnostics to know if someone else has been inside of a device before. If a device has been opened, there are many more things that have to be taken into consideration and specifically looked for, mainly accidentally knocked off caps, damaged connectors, drilled holes in the PCB where there shouldn't be holes and so on.
personally i just don't want ugly huge stickers visible on my GPU... points at that GIANT white sticker with QR code right below the GPU cutout... warranty or not, that sticker has got to go!
Steve EVGA is gonna be pissed at you for this video... So many people commenting about the 6 SP caps that have no clue that the retail version of this card is 4+2 design. That and they care more about the number of X capacitor than the fact that you clearly stated that this card got you the highest scores out of all the ones you tested.. guess everyone's an electrical engineer now.
duh :p why bother watching this if only half the content is digested properly :p

I can't get over how terrible everything looks compared to the FE card.
Even compared to older cards it's so damn ugly lol
Almost every 3000 series card is just hideous. I don't even get it. Only cards I actually like is the Strix and Kingpin, the HOF will probably look decent too tho over the top as always.
the MSI ventus and the gigabyte n3080vision look really good imo
Mine 3090 FTW3 came with a black lipstick. Thank you EVGA.
The amount of whining about a purely superficial red line is astonishing.
and most of the whiners want even see the line when the card is mounted.
If you pay 700 or 1500 dollars for something, the performance should be the first concern, but that doesn't mean how it looks becomes irrelevant especially when that horrendous red outline would conflict with a lot people's builds.
