    According to JacobF from EVGA, the pad thicknesses are: "Memory is 2.25mm, VRM 2.85mm, back VRAM is 2mm". He posted this on the EVGA Forum on Oct 20, 2020

      Those numbers are wrong for 1 reason
      They use thicker but softer pads.
      Softer pads will squish but harder pads dont. Thats they their numbers are useless.

      Good point on softness. FWIW, there is also a FAQ page on EVGAs website that lists pad thickness for all of their cards. For 3090, they show 2, 2.25, 2.5, and 2.75 in various locations. No 2.85 like JacobF wrote.

    Great video! I'll tell ya though, I've had my ventus 3090 since 2021 without ever opening it up and my memory junction & hot spot temps never exceeded 90 C. After adding aluminum heatsinks to the backplate over the vram and getting a new case with better airflow, now I get more like 82-85 C. Core almost never exceeds 75 C.

    Before removing old pads and adding new ones, don´t forget to measure all the old pads first and note down their individual thicknesses. You´ll avoid experimenting with pads thickness.
    It is only unavoidable in a situation, when a manufacturer uses atypical thickness, which isn´t generally available.

      Old pads often disintegrate when remove from gddr6x chips. It's almost impossible to measure them correctly.

    Sometimes the putty can be reworked by hand to become surprisingly soft again. Definitely wear gloves when doing so. I usually just knead it by hand. That being said, it is possible the putty got cooked with the 2 fans not running. The VRM's do get quite hot, but I haven't seen bone-dry EVGA putty yet myself.
    Worst case, there are some good putties out there now that perform as good or better than the EVGA putty did.

    3090s always run their mem too damn hot. The memory on the back side of the board cannot be cooled at all. My MSI 3090 Suprim X was also running it's mem at 90C out of the box and even higher if temp in the case got warm, so seeing mem temps going towards 100C is really not ideal. After installing a waterblock(front AND back) my memory temps dropped to about 60C which is way better.

    I am curious why coils get so hot? Isn't that the mosfets should be generating most of the heat?

    • @volentimeh
      @volentimeh 5 місяців тому

      In basic terms the coils are "smoothing" the voltage from the output of the mosfets which are operating in their most efficient mode, turning completely on and off, this smoothing is lossy and causes the heating. "coil whine" is the waste effects of the smoothing becoming audiable.
