  • On this episode of Jurassic World Explorers, Coyote, Mark, and Mario team up with Jurassic World Franchise paleontologist Brian Switek, to take a look at the skeletal remains from some of the film’s most iconic dinosaurs. With the Chicago Field Museum’s Hall of Dinosaurs as their prehistoric themed backdrop, we travel from the Jurassic and into the Cretaceous, where ultimately the team gets an exclusive visit with SUE. Hailing as the biggest, best-preserved and most complete T-Rex skeleton ever unearthed, the team is granted special access to film the skeleton while its new exhibit is under construction. We are proud to announce that SUE’s new exhibit within the museum’s Griffin Halls of Evolving Planet will officially be open to the public beginning Friday, December 21, 2018.

    Living in Chicago, it's such a great opportunity to have such a fantastically preserved fossil specimin in your own city. Working downtown as a tour guide especially gives me the opportunity to talk about Sue and others (albeit briefly) to people from all over the world. If you ever plan on visiting our fair Second City, I'd highly reccomend the Field Musuem for all of it's wonderful and historic marvels! Can't wait to see her new exhibit!! It’s not crazy to think there were T. rex that grew just as large or even larger than the one we see in Jurassic Park (Which is 44ft long 17feet tall). I genuinely think there existed bigger Trex that beat even Scotty found in Canada (42ft)

      Well T.Rex is the strongest thing that ever walked on two legs so it's the King of the Dinosaurs no matter what. also it's the biggest thing that even walked on two legs , I know Spinosaurus , Giganotosaurus and Carcharadontosaurus are longer than T.Rex but Carchara is the 2th biggest and T.Rex is at least 2 tons heavier than Carcharadontosaurus , and Spinosaurus's weight is not even half the T.Rex's weight. (Spinosaurus 3-5 tons and T.Rex (sue) 9-14 tons , also Scientists believe that the T.Rex can grow up to 15 meters long because why the heck not ? also it's Tyrannosaurus not Tyrant Saurians (if you didn't meant the Tyrannosaurids.)

    This might a bit of a stretch but do you think it’s possible that the plates also allowed other abilities? It’s shape would be very good at tracking wind direction and possibly even speed. This may have allowed it to predict storms to a degree (though this is probably unlikely).
    Going along this idea, if they catch wind draft then they could also probably catch sounds too. Is it possible that these helped them sense vibrations or hear things? (Sense bones in our ears help allow us to hear, and it’s known you can hear through your bones just as Beethoven did).
    Even if stegosaurus was possibly warm blooded, elephants still use their ears for body temp control. They may fan their ears to cool off but they use them as solar panels to heat up too. So I think it’s possible for the plates too (in a more passive way though).
    Saying that, large ears means very good hearing. This is true and has been proven for many many species living today. Which brings me back to what I said before:
    Is it possible the plates could have helped senses and awareness of surrounds and possible danger? (Even as a passive skill?)
    I don’t doubt their use for protection or display. This is characteristic is also seen in deer, chameleons, and many other living animals. Triceratops frills and horns were obviously for protection of the neck and for attacking as well as possible display and identification. Thus it wouldn’t be surprising if the plates (as well as spikes) helped protect the vulnerable and exposed backs or stegosaurs. Though I also think it’s possible, the the possibilities mentioned here are all true rather than just one being right (based on what I just said.)

    Is it illegal to combine t-Rex bones together to get 100% t-Rex?🦖

    • @Riceball01
      @Riceball01 5 років тому +9

      No, that's done all the time in dinosaur paleontology since it's very rare to get a 100% skeleton of anything. So what paleontologists will do is combine pieces of other specimens to fill in the blanks. They do this along with mirroring things like ribs and limb bones. They sometimes also fill in the gaps using bones from related species when they either find a new species of just haven't found a complete enough specimen of a given species.
      Just to be clear though, when talking about combing bones they don't literally mix and match from different specimens. What they'll do is make copies of missing bones based on the matching bone(s) from another specimen to fill in the gap, you can usually tell when they've done that because the missing bone, or even gap in the bone, is a slightly different, but noticeable colo.

    • @argetlam350
      @argetlam350 5 років тому +9

      Trix is actually the third most complete t-rex skeleton with it being about 75 to 80 percent complete. Her size varies in estimation from 39.5 ft to 41 ft. This estimation instead of actually having a confirmed length like Sue, is probably due to the fact parts of Sue and another t-rex specimen, Stan, were used to replicate other pieces that were not found originally. It is the oldest T-rex specimen, believed to of lived up to more then thirty years, which was found out by using a X-ray micro-tomography, which can be done without damaging the bones, and a very small hole drilled in the fibula to allow comparison with the results of the X-ray based technique.

    Man, i've searched long and hard for a trex specimen that isn't on a 3 foot pedestal. I want to gauge how tall this thing was without the added height of a museum pedestal. It's frustrating because all of my sources say that Sue was 3.7 meters tall at the hip, but It doesn't look like the museum specimen is even close to that tall. Also, jurassic parks portrayal of T rex is said to be accurate, but it's pretty obvious (looking at the scene in at 8:44 when the t-rex foot engulfs a person) that they've grossly inflated it's size too. It's sad, I just want to see the animal represented accurately.

    I think this sort of series with Coyote could have been a great opportunity for the Jurassic franchise to be more scientifically accurate, Like back in the days JP wantend to show the dinosaurs as accurately as possible with the knowledgde they had. So, for the first movies I think you can defend the 'inaccuracies' (I love the movies). tho I find it weird that they genetically enginered broken wrists for the dinosaurs, but at the time of JP of course they didn't know.
    JW however.. Opportunity missed with coyote.
    Edit: btw I love Coyote too
