    This video saved my snare mixing. All of the advice here is quite different from the usual ones online and definitely got me the sound I like the best out of all the suggestions online.

    Being a musician who records rather than having a lot of mixing or engineering experience this video was just brilliant. Thanks for presenting it in such a clear, interesting and easy to understand way. Always grateful to people willing to do these vids to help the rest of us. Liked and subscribed.

    No level matching cheated the ears here. The snare became all about high-end.
    And yes it's good ton inspire peoples with tricks and tips, but please people, don't copy/paste EQ curve it doesn't make any sense. You can take the basic idea (like "hmmm clever to boost like crazy the high-end on the kick and putting the EQ before the comp on the channelstrip"), but don't do like "ho I boost +12db at 8khz, I'll do the same !"). Every takes from every instruments as a different resonant peak and fundamental.
    Anyway, nice video, it's super clean editing.

      True, the underlying concept used judiciously per song is the important part, but he’s a terrific youtuber who needs to have a solid “hook” for his videos. He has that here. And, I think, showcasing such concepts almost as a caricature of itself is a solid way of demonstrating a technique. Great video; let’s all keep using our ears and taste per song 🍻👍🏼

      Tom and Chris Lord Alge do add that much top end on kick and snare all the time. The idea is to start from there and then tweak to taste. I’ve seen Tom do that 8k boost ( Really more like 7.2k on kicks and 6-8k on snares) twice.

    great video! i learned a lot! in recent videos i saw cla adding 8k a lot, but also adding a sh**load of 150hz to the snare and tons of 50hz to the kick. it seems you just boosted the highs, but i think his "trick" is boosting the highs and lows, don´t you think?!

    • @MixBetterNowTV
      @MixBetterNowTV  8 років тому +5

      Hey Frederik, I'm glad you liked the vid! :-) Yeah, I've seen Chris boost the low end as well... Chris gets a lot of his "overall" low end from his 2Buss chain which includes a pair of EQP-1S3's... I think the low end freq he picks is a case by case basis on drums, especially if he chooses to use drum samples. The 3 main moves I've seen him do (consistently) on the drums is top out 8k on the high shelf, bottom out 500hz (or there about... he's looking to get rid of that boxy/nasal thing) with the narrowest bandwidth the SSL allows, and then look for the "knock" or attack between 800hz and 5k. I'm just sharing what I've seen and experienced... not saying this is The CLA Gospel or anything like that, haha. Just trying to share what I know and have seen so everyone watching can try them out and apply these similar techniques on their drums. I appreciate your comment :-)

    • @andyrumschlag
      @andyrumschlag 8 років тому +2

      I've seen CLA do that as well, and I was wondering if that would be touched on in this video, but the drums sound phenomenal as they were mixed in this vid so I guess he didn't need to :P

      I was curious as well, just for my own knowledge. The drums sound great but was there a reason for taking out low information on the kick out rather than boosting it? and when you say 2buss chain, do you mean parallel?

    • @MixBetterNowTV
      @MixBetterNowTV  8 років тому +1

      No worries, Vaughan! The reason I cut some lows on the KICK OUT mic is because I must have heard some muddy build up there... The Kick OUT mic will always have much more low end information in it as opposed to the Kick IN (assuming theyre mic'd correctly). The idea of a Kick In mic is to capture the attack/click of the beater head while the Kick Out mic captures the fullness, girth, and overall low end thump of the kick. Because there is often low end build up on the Kick Out (this can happen on the Kick In as well), I like to tame the muddier areas. Cutting frequencies can have the same effect as boosting... If by removing a muddy or boxy low frequency, it will usually make the Kick sound bigger because its now more clean and focused (or whatever instrument we're doing the same thing to). As with most mix decisions, they're usually track contingent. Hope that helps! ;-)

    Snare sounds kinda papery. Maybe just a preference but I prefer snare to have some beef. Seems like snare bottom mic is unnecessary in this instance. Kick sounds excellent though.

    • @MixBetterNowTV
      @MixBetterNowTV  8 років тому +1

      Haha. Jason, I DID NOT use any samples... The drums were tracked really well by the producer and engineer so it sure made life easy! That's what I always say: getting the sound you want during the recording phase is the most important aspect of making a record (aside from actually having great songs to track, haha). When I have clients send me sessions that sound amazing, the tracks mix themselves... THANKS for watching, and you're very welcome for the tut! ;-)

    Nice. You use the UAD SSL. Did you compare to the Waves SSL ? I ask this question, because after realizing some frequency analysis of the VMR SSL, the Waves E channel and the T-rack Britich Black knob emolution, none of them has the same curve at 8K shelf, nor at 3K on the high mid knob (Green). For ex, At 3k position, the Slate is 2,2Khz, waves is 3,8Khz... I don't have access to the UAD SSL Channel strip, so I could not compare. would you mind to make a test of it ?

    • @MixBetterNowTV
      @MixBetterNowTV  8 років тому +3

      Hey Christian. I unfortunately don't have the Waves SSL Channel Strip as Im not a huge fan of it. I'm not saying anything negative about it or Waves... I just personally love the UAD emulation and feel its the most authentic sounding to the actual console. I'm a pretty big UAD user and fan. In my humble opinion they make the best plugins on the planet. BUT REMEMBER: Its the Wizard, never the Wand... Good technique and acquired skill sets always trumps gear ;-) Cheers!

      This reminds me of a meeting I had many years ago. I was responsible for giving a vitally important sales presentation to a large bank in which I used a new-fangled presentation easel that came in a tube. You simply grabbed the handle, clicked a switch (like a trigger-type deal) and the easel unfolded with a snap into a tripod and a support upon which one could rest the graphical presentation boards. After the pitch, I asked, "Well, what do you think?" To which the bank VP replied, "We're not interested in your services, but where did you get that easel?" (Not saying this presentation was worse than the screen cap software ... just reminded me of an awkward moment I'd hoped to forget.)

    Any reason you went for the black knobs instead of brown knobs?

    • @MixBetterNowTV
      @MixBetterNowTV  8 років тому +4

      Hey David! Fantastic question! There's most definitely a reason I went with the "Black Knob" version instead of the brown... The original and early model SSL E-Channel consoles (pre 1983) were brown knob. SSL designed the black knob desks in conjunction with George Martin when he opened the famous AIR Studios in '83. Theres a tonal difference in the EQ's. The Q curves and filter slopes are more gentle in the brown knob (brown filters have a 12 db p/octave slope and the black is an 18). They also have less gain on tap than the black knob. The Black knob is able to to +/- 18db of gain while the brown is +/- 15db. So overall the black knob desk is able to get a bit more aggressive and extreme when EQ'ing than the brown. I tend to pick one or the other depending on the session and what I feel the tracks call for :-)
