Great video!! I'm no longer in love with my bedroom paint color. Why I ever chose bright yellow is a mystery to me. I chose the color from swatches without researching quality verses price or brand. So after watching this video, I feel much more confident in choosing the right color for our bedroom. Thank You Julie for explaining the differences in paint brands and the quality of the paint based on price.

    • @JulieKhuu

I didn’t understand the difference in quality until I painted the walls myself Patricia. The good ones simply need primer and one coat! 😍

Benjamin Moore has never ever failed me. I love your nail polish example. BM paints look as fresh in year 10 as day 1. Their colors are dynamic, changing with the light throughout the day. BM is worth the price. Applies clean, like butter. Have been majorly let down with Behr. SW is good for exterior. Luv you Julie 💕

Hi Julie!! My wife and I consider you our favorite UA-cam Interior Designer. Great content. We have one question. We need advice on how to decide what to paint on the accent wall. Thank you! This was super helpful! We are mixing ivory/off-white trim, cupboards, and doors (throughout our home) with a new bright white washer and dryer in our laundry room. Our pedestal sink and toilet in the same small room are bisque, and shelving with cupboards above the washer and dryer are ivory-ish. I was stuck with how to pull together the white and off/white with a neutral wall color. Thank you! Since we have both gray and beige in our tile floor, it looks like a light greige from Benjamin Moore will work. Grateful.

I wish you had a grid per room of the recommended neutrals and finishes. Paint has been the most daunting for me and now I have to figure out the main furniture pieces based on your advice. Make sure you get a ton of samples painted on the wall, place your LVP on the floor next to them, and keep living with it until you’re 100% confident Katrina! You will never regret all the time you took to get it right, but you will always regret getting the color wrong once it’s painted all over your home. You got this 🙌🏻

I downsized from a large house to a 2 bedroom condo that has floor to ceiling doors in each room leading to a balcony. I used budget friendly Behr's Studio Clay color, but in their highest end paint in eggshell. I used Benjamin Moore's Coventry Gray in my bedrooms...painting the trim the same color as the walls....I love the colors I selected and how they pare with my furnishings. Thank you for supporting the lower cost paints! For those of us on a budget we cannot afford the Farrow and Ball or Maybe even the Benjamin Moore paints. I do use them for smaller rooms or projects because the quality is so good. I have been using the Behr for years now and I can say the quality has gotten much better. I usually use the mid to upper range ones like the Marquee. I get quite good one coat coverage with mid tone colors. And the flats I have used are quite nice. There is a color called Poppyseed Black that I love, and many others. Like the warm and relaxing Warm White Wool. So I have repainted most of my interior in Behr and it is holding up quite well and is very scrubbable. I am an artist so I tend to lean towards more vibrant and warm earthy colors unless it is my studio where I like white walls so the Southern light from my window does not bounce a color off the walls and change the light onto my canvases... I don't tend towards the dark blacks on a large scale as I don't like the cave look. I reserve that for a theater room. I am too much of a light lover. Great tips! Thanks!

I have used Behr paint for many, many years. The quality is excellent. So is Valspar from Lowe's. Don't buy into the idea that you need to buy paints that are twice as expensive but in no way twice as good. I know decorators in my area that are not pompous about these things and they love Behr and Valspar. it glides on the wall and looks fantastic. It is fairly priced and is easy to find. So go for it and save some money by using Behr (from Home Depot) or Valspar (from Lowe's). It will go on great and look great! I do also like Sherwin-Williams paint, but for the money and the great results I get, I most often go with the Behr or Valspar.

The reason I watched your video is so that I could learn more about some of these paint colors. When you actually got to the paint colors you quickly brushed through them so that I had to go back several times and pause it so that I could study, review the different colors and everything you wrote on them. My suggestion would be to hold that frame a little longer when there are multiple things for your viewers to read. I recognize this is an older video and maybe you can’t do much with it at this point, but for future reference it would be helpful for you to pause on the colors and talk a little bit about each one that you introduce. I tested 3 bright whites - one each from Benj. Moore, Sherwin Williams, and Behr. I chose Behr's Ultra White -- It's so beautiful! The only problem is that it takes several coats to get a true saturation so that you don't "see through" it, as it were. But it's brighter than the other colors and is gorgeous no matter the time of day or night. I'm doing all of the public areas in it as well as 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. It's also the color for all of the woodwork, so there's continuity throughout the house. Ahhhh! There's nothing like a color you love to make 2020's sheltering in place a really welcoming refuge.

Please do not talk about "Paint & Primer in one" that is something the Behr paint started and then the other marketing divisions of the other companies jumped on board. If you read the TDS sheets on such paints, they all say for best results use a primer or works over previously painted surfaces. From a chemist standpoint, it's either one or the other, a primer is not a finish coat and a coating designed to be a finish coat cannot be a primer. Do yourself a favor, always recommend a primer and topcoat, especially when in new construction.

Great advice. Lighting dictates color. Always. The reason you pick the color last is that there are 100's of 1000's of paint colors and if you picked your paint first you will have a hard time blending it and matching it with your rugs/upholstery. Also, if you pick bold colored upholstery that color will impact the color you chose for your walls. I once had a client pick very neutral agreeable Gray (SW) with new construction build and then buy a Red sectional. It instantly turned this wonderful wall color Pink toned. So, it is very important to pick out your furniture and rugs curtains then pick out your wall color. When picking finish of paint you have to consider the fact that anything other than flat cannot be then easily touched up.. you have to repaint the entire wall with eggshell/satin etc. I always recommend flat for walls. You can easily touch it up without having to repaint the entire wall. Flat paint also hides a multitude of sins. If the finish on your walls is not perfect, definitely use flat paint.

I had a client pick SW Sea Salt on new Construction. Which looks stellar in well lit rooms with it's cool Blue/Green-Gray undertones. Then she moved in with all her warm under toned furniture and rugs. I have never seen Sea Salt look so ugly in a house. Lighting and what you put to the room impacts your color so much.

I like to match the trim to my doors, but I also change up each interior space to coordinate with the furnishings. So common areas can have white trim for example, but inside each room, the trim + door color will be different. All these colors can be used in modern interiors Grace- just depends on how you apply them 👍🏻☺️

What is a good neutral color for a living room and kitchen that has soft wood colors on the floor and cabinets? I noticed the looks had mostly white trim, which we don’t have. Great video!
