I just re-read this series this week after not having read it since it was originally released. I remember liking this series when it was coming out, but reading it now, I feel like it’s hindered by being stuck in the post Civil War Marvel publishing era. Makes the book feel very dated now.
I always saw the Eternals as Kirby going back to Marvel and trying the New Gods again.
Love both creators...
...could not get into this...
... ready to listen to the CK take on this
I wanted to enjoy the comic but it was such a let down, it said nothing interesting, added nothing of value to the mythos, and was the first time seeing JRjr's art and not liking it. Shame really. Though it did lead to me seeking out the Chuck Austen & Kev Walker "The Eternal" from the Marvel MAX line that's a hardcore take on the Eternals in a fashion. Far more engaging from the jump.
Agreed. Gaiman's writing usually has spark while this was flat.
I love Romita jr. Art but Gaimen is so boring. Give me Kirby’s version any day
PLEASE MORE JRJR COVERAGE!!! Maybe some from his 80s and 90s runs to show his evolution ?
I'm with Ed on this one. I've never taken to Miki's inks on JRJR, personally. It looks way too fragile, brittle. That ain't JRJR to me.
Another note about JRs art is that nothing is drawn seductively, it’s all functional. His drawings are informational. Thats why Id say hes almost more a cartoonist than a comic illustrator. Probably why his storytelling is so strong as well.
I loved so much this Eternals story. Do more stuff on Romita Jr!
Say what you like about JRJR but this was magnificent
8:51 Sick Splash! Please Review an old Kirby Kamandi!
Eternals was one of the first books i can remember buying off the racks, but i missed this somehow. Looks interesting, but... i guess i just love Kirby too much
Boy, I was just thinking about these comic characters. I think I even have one of those 2006 issues. I realized that I couldn't tell you one thing about the characters. I can tell you things about Darkhawk and Speedball The Masked Marvel, but not The Eternals. With the movie coming out, I don't think that's a good thing.
I love JRJR, but I think the baggy clothes are more a sign of one of his shortcomings than a creative decision. Just flipped through some random Spider-Man comics drawn by him and every male character who isn't in costume wears baggy clothes. I also think he often draws slightly boring interiors. I guess when you're going at that breakneck speed you don't sit there with a sketchbook, figuring shit out, you move along. A boring interior still get´s the job done and the next page is probably going to be really cool. As a superhero artist, he´s still easily one of my favorites for all the stuff he does extremely well and the speedy drawing obviously works for him overall.
Great looking book. I’m a Gaiman fan but my memory of the story is kinda fuzzy. It was a redemption from that awful 1602 series.
This kinda feels like a mix of Moebius and Erik Larsen to me. Not sure why.
Jack Kirby and JR JR are both workhorses who do great stuff on autopilot.
Anyone know if they based the movie on this, or the earlier Kirby work?
The hardcover edition on that is not full bleed on that first splash, it's cropped.
I'd be so down for you guys to keep going with this series!
