Michel’s daredevil deep dive on his IG lead me to believe him doing a DD Grand Design. This idea I can get behind.
I love this run on Daredevil. For me it's JR JR at his best and the writing from Nocenti is top notch. Was a higlight of my comic reading days as a kid. Have returned to it many ntimes over the years. Don't know why it's not as revered as some of the more recent (but in my mind lesser) modern runs.
I think it might be due to how poorly it's been collected. These issues are all over the place and there's never really been an actual "DAREDEVIL BY ANN NOCENTI" collection.
Here's a (devilishly) hot take: I prefer Nocenti's Daredevil to Frank Miller's!
This run was such the perfect storm of creators (Nocenti, JRJR, Al Williamson, Max Scheele, Joe Rosen) that allowed them to make one of the best series in comics!
And, of course, the fill-in issue with Steve Ditko!
I agree. Miller's stuff is great but Nocenti's stuff is so varied and so weird. Ultron spouting existential philosophy on a hill made out of copies of his own head is burned into my brain. Classic stuff.
Honestly I agree , I mean Miller did a lot of things for the first time props to him for that but he brought a lot of new stuff to the genre and there have been people who built on that later on
Also I love Nocentis stories a particular favourite is a Spidey story called life in the mad dogward with bill seinkevicz art
The first Nocenti Daredevil stuff (up to the issue you cover here #252) will be reprinted in November in Daredevil Epic Collection It Comes With The Claws.
#253 onwards are collected in the Daredevil Epic Collections A Touch of Typhoid, Hearts of Darkness and Last Rites.
@@sophia_comicartIt's all good but A Touch of Typhoid contains the strongest collection of issues and is the better value of the three collections that are available now :)
I learned how to draw straight lines by trying to emulate Williamson from this run. Thanks Al!
JRJR + Williamson is truly exceptional. With Nocenti helming the ship it's next level. All the players were A Team and they really showed up here. My favorite Daredevil run
I would really love to know what company Michel went through to bind that gorgeous looking book.
Thank you for doing this! I never understood why this run is under-appreciated. It's my fave DD run and it's why he is my fave Marvel character. No-one draws physical dynamics like JR Jr. There's a real understanding of weight, momentum etc throughout his work.
The JRJR/Nocenti run is so awesome, and Michel Fiffe's omnibus edition was supercool! I love that he name-checked Mysterious Time Machine, which is the best NYC comic shop!
That cover still whips so much ass
I started picking up the Nocenti run on Daredevil when I was introduced to Romita JRs work on Punisher. Nocenti and JRJRs run on Daredevil is one of the best runs in comic book history. Its just sooooo good. It makes you wish comics were this good again.
I picked this up because I'm a Xmen completist, then had to pick up the entire run based on JRJRs art
The one major thing this issue got wrong is the civilians are panicking about everything, except toilet paper😆😅🤣😂
I remember an issue drawn by jrjr where dardevil is in mephistos realm. would love if you covered that one.
If memory serves me correctly, Cain was a girl dressed up as a boy?
Didn't know Ann run was so well regarded. Good to will have to fill in that gap in my collection.
I love Nocenti’s run in DD almost as much as Miller’s.
Is Copra finished at round 7?
That's got to be a nod to Eisner on the 1st page.
Many thanks boys. I have sold another comic thanks to the kayfade effect. Always love the shows. Keep up the great work.
Got this off the news stand when it came out and eventually got it signed by JR JR. Got the full run of his DD eventually (and that BWS issue) Love this vid as always
Daredevil #271 was one of my first 100 comics and I could not have been less interested in it…lol. I’ve since come around on this whole run.
Nice
Funny - that pinky caught my attention immediately, too.
I can't DD seriously since it is not written in braille.
Dude on page 5 has a face like a guy from Akira.
Great review guys
I had a professor in grad school named James Goodman who wrote a great book called Blackout about that time period. He specialized in the intersection between fiction/storytelling and history. I learned a lot about developing a story from him
