  • On our most recent tarantula hunt focused on Aphonopelma seemanni, the Costa Rican Zebra Tarantula. A. seemanni is a species of tarantula from Central America, occurring in countries like Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Guatemala.
    Even though there is potentially a new species in this huge distribution range, we will cover the Zebra Tarantula, Aphonopelma seemanni in this episode in a little more detail.
    Aphonopelma seemanni makes a great pet tarantula, just make sure you give them the substrate to dig their deep burrows, that way they will also stay calm and don't react very defensive.
    Get inspired by the nature of Costa Rica and maybe build your next enclosure for Aphonopelma seemanni a little different.
    Disclaimer: No spiders were hurt or illegally harvested for this documentary. Aphonopelma aberrans is nomen dubia since 2013 which I totally forgot, let's blame the sun and heat for my mistake... or just myself :)

    I got my first in the '90s (second tarantula ever!), and it burrowed immediately. Awesome spiders. I was literally JUST explaining to someone that most of them will burrow (hers hadn't at first, but did eventually). I absolutely love seeing video of their natural habitat. The girl I have now has a nice deep burrow as well. Love the stuff about Aphonopelma being kind of a placeholder genus for tarantulas that haven't been studies. I can't wait to see how that all pans out once they are properly described. Awesome stuff, bud...as always!

    Help!! Today I went to go change my pink-toe tarantula’s water and as I was about to refill her water dish after I dumped the dirty water out, she climbed up my arm extremely fast and then dropped about 2 1/2 feet. She landed on her feet though. I gently picked her up, put her back in her enclosure, quickly refilled her water and shut the enclosure, I’ve been watching her and she seems fine. What do I do?!

    • @birdspiders
      @birdspiders  5 років тому +1

      You'd see a wound with liquid if the spider got seriously injured - therefore everything sounds like it's OK. Just let her rest :)

  • @SuperLoops

    hmm interesting thing about the clay soil...my A seemanni has never dug a proper burrow but it does a lot of digging, like a LOT of digging, it seems to just be always piling up dirt in one corner of its enclosure, then digging it all up again and making a different pile. and of course burying its water bowl. but never actually making a hole or tunnel like other spiders even tho it has deep substrate to dig down if it wants. a few months ago I gave it half a flower pot for a hide and it seems to like it in there and hasnt dug nearly so much since

    • @birdspiders
      @birdspiders  4 роки тому

      maybe it's because the substrate consistency doesnt allow for tunnel building? Try a more clay like substrate to it, it will work wonders 💪👌

    • @SuperLoops
      @SuperLoops 4 роки тому

      yep thats what I was thinking..right now its substrate is topsoil with a some coco fibre and vermiculite mixed in. thats what all my fossorial spiders get and the rest of them can make stable tunnels, but maybe there is something different about the way A seemanni burrows, like I dont think Ive ever seen it try to web around where its been digging and everyone else uses silk to hold up their tunnels. maybe A seemani relies much more on the structure of the soil...hmmm we will see

    • @jacks559
      @jacks559 3 роки тому

      @@SuperLoops I find this to be the case too, my A seemanni doesn't web up it's tunnels like my other burrowers so I've had to give her a more structural substrate that doesn't collapse.

    My strip knee burrowed a week ago and hasn’t come out since. Like I can’t even see the original hole it dug because it burrowed itself. Tomorrow is supposed to be feeding day. Should I leave it alone or try to get it back out in the open?

    Question, I have a A. seemanni blue form. Are they hobby bred or also in the wild? Also, how long does the dry season last? Thank you!

    • @birdspiders
      @birdspiders  5 років тому +1

      they are also present in the wild, but not sure how constant their coloration is and if it's really a color form or just a state some specimens go through until they appear to be brown again. But we've seen blue specimens of A. seemanni in the wild in Nicaragua, so no hobby bred.
      Dry season in this area is usually from December to April

    • @birdspiders
      @birdspiders  5 років тому

      Blood Eagle 88 I've seen dozens and dozens of A. seemanni in the wild, in Nicaragua and now Costa Rica. Some are blue, others are not - in the same population. I'm therefore not convinced it's a stable colorform when so many different looking specimens are living hole to hole just meters away from each other
