- I recently flew to my hometown Fond du Lac, WI, which is a mere 13 nautical miles south of Oshkosh's Wittman Regional Airport - the home of the annual EAA Airventure Fly-in. I couldn't resist the chance to land there.
This video contains the entire flight from the time the cameras turn on before engine start until the time they turnoff after engine stop.

Awesome. I'm wrapping up my PPL training here at KSAV. The airport where I was bitten by the aviation bug some 40+ years ago, will be one of my milestone destinations indeed! In my 25 years working in the safety/training role in the transportation industry, I spent many days and nights in Wisconsin. My former company was based out of Green Bay, and I would stop at the "Planeview" restaurant not far from the Oshkosh EAA and airfield often. I considered it one of our aviation temples there. Anyway, I've enjoyed watching your videos. Hope to cross paths with you soon back here on the east coast. Cheers!
Good luck on your private! Let me know what you think of your checkride. I'm seeing a pattern from people after they're done and I don't want to influence the result. But I'd like to know how it goes.
And I hope we cross paths, too. KSAV isn't really that far from me in Charlotte. It's one of my waypoints on the way to Florida - where I hope to be taking my wife as the temps get cooler and a retreat to warmer climates seems appealing.

I grew up in Fondy. Landing at that airport the first time was surprisingly meaningful for me.

I'm over in Eau Claire, WI. I just did my solo 150nm XC requirement on 10/9/22 and landed at Oshkosh and Green Bay. Was pretty cool getting to land at two awesome airports.

On my way back to NC, I first took my son to KMKE. We landed at the FBO and took a courtesy car and dropped him off at the commercial side so that he could catch his flight. It was really fun flying into/out of such a busy Charlie, and also having a practical reason to do so.
I wish I would have gotten some Charlie experience during my training. Landed at MKE for the first time last week, been to MSN a few times, now just have to get to GRB. I was a little nervous the first time, but after the first time you realize it’s not that big of a deal as long as you pay attention. One of these days I want to land at ORD
@@thebadgerpilot The first time I landed at a Charlie on my own - e.g. without my CFI - I pretty much screwed it up pretty bad. It was at RDU.
The landing and parking was fine. But departing, I didn't know where to do my runup and I ended up doing it at the departure end of the runway while airliners tried to get around me.
Then when I got the details from clearance, I didn't write down the departure frequency. I was expecting them to tell me the freq on the cutover like they always do in my home delta airport. Nope: "74W contact departure".
So I looked it up in foreflight. And at CLT arrival and departure are on the same frequency. So I picked the arrival freq and contacted them. After my first call they gave me the correct frequency.
It was a mess.
Leaving MKE I had that history so I was a *TON* more prepared . I had the taxi map up, and was ready to copy RAFT (Route, Altitude, Frequency, Transponder) before I even keyed the mic. Just that tiny bit of preparation made it so much better.
I'd like to figure out a time to land at CLT the very busy Bravo that I live near. Not nearly as busy as ORD of course, but much busier than CVG which seemed basically dead both times I flew through.
@@thebadgerpilot For my night XC we flew over to Flying Cloud KFCM in Minneapolis with vectors over MSP. Was great to get some Bravo experience, and awesome to see all the huge jets taking off and landing beneath us. I think that's why I wasn't nervous flying into a Charlie for the first time solo.
Also, just ask for flight following and they'll hand you off to the right folks to get you in.
I’ve flown all over that area as I’m based at Waukesha, 56NM south of OSH so makes an easy XC with lots to do there. I’ve landed at every public airport within a 30NM radius of FLD (except Sheboygan) but am yet to touch pavement there yet! It’s too easy to skip over to get to my destination, but now that I don’t need any more XC PIC hours, I am going to check off some of these closet “overflight” fields
KFLD is an odd airport to have on a bucket list. Most people have no idea that it even exists, and if they do know it, it's usually because it was their backup because they couldn't get a spot at KOSH. But for me it was pretty important as I used to work just off the approach end of RWY 36. In fact you can see the go-kart track out the window here: 52:06. All summer long, I worked outside watching airplanes come and go and wishing I was up there. And then I was. That's what was going through my mind at this point: 35:25
I can see how it's just a "flyover" field to most people. But it wasn't for me.

I don't live that close to KOSH. I grew up there. I currently live in NC. This trip was on my first significant cross country from NC to WI to visit my mom. And I couldn't resist taking a flight to KOSH.
The current plan is to participate in Cherokees 2 Osh next year.
Also: I know you had to reschedule your checkride. Is that done yet? If not when is that scheduled for?

15:30 yeah I mean I knew it was only 13 nm, but I really wasn't ready for how close it was. Part of it is the bias from growing up there and "knowing" that Oshkosh is 30m away.... by car.

From the perspective of someone who has been practicing a lot of landings lately in a very similar cherokee 😅: It's hard to tell from the video, but I think you might need to flare a bit more. Looks like you're landing flat, I think if you pull back just a bit more right before touchdown your landings might be smoother. Airspeed and approach look perfect otherwise 👍

A little more color on this: You're not the only person to have made this observation. I seem to go through waves of "Holy crap, all I do is greasers" followed by waves of "What the !@$ is wrong with my landings". And then repeat.
I always appreciate any feedback. To paraphrase Linus Torvalds: With enough eyes, all (landing) bugs are shallow.

@@1dullgeek as a software engineer, I appreciate the reference. That general mindset is applicable in so many areas. I'm constantly asking folks for feedback on how to improve at work, with hobbies, and with flying.
Thanks for sharing. I have a few airports near where I grew up in FL that I want to visit in my Cherokee. Do you have a liner of some sort on your hat rack? Did you have to custom cut it? I’m trying to find something thin but durable as there is one area that I have a crack in that I don’t want to spread.
I did not expect to have as strong a reaction to landing at my home airport. And flying over the place that I worked during summers, watching airplanes come and go. But I had it. Fair warning if you ever get to fly your own plane to some of those places.
I have my POH and some sun shades that are fitted for a PA28. My CFI has a Piper Arrow and he no longer had any need for them so gave them to me. I don't know where he got them. I can ask. Although I doubt that what I have will do what you're looking for.
Landing at my home town airport, KFLD was actually a much bigger milestone for me than landing at Oshkosh. During the pattern work, I commented on seeing the sports complex. That's a place that I used to work when I was a kid and flying right over the top of it, I remembered being a kid at the go-kart track looking up at airplanes coming into land or takeoff and wishing I could do that. Was a pretty cool experience to be on the other end.
What bucket list airports do you have that you want to land at?
bucket list? OSH is definitely up there. Near me, there's an airport I think I flew out of in the 90s (1W1) when I bummed rides, and there's a cool one in a beach town that is a bit technical (KPFC). Otherwise, going out to Catalina (KAVX), San Juan Islands (KFHR, S31, KORS), Outer Banks (KFFI, obv), Key West. Huh, I guess I have a thing for islands.
