- During my instrument training, I discovered how helpful it was to fly practice approaches while VFR. I still do them because they help hone my instrument flying skills. In this video, I fly a couple of VFR Practice Approaches. I also have a camera on my GPS and I've screen recorded Foreflight to help give a better idea of what I'm doing.

This is the kind of IFR videos I want to see and never seem to find. So helpful and well done man!
Thanks!
If you have suggestions for something else that would help, let me know. I'm not above taking suggestions.
@@1dullgeek I like the IFR for dummies approach to this... suits my level perfectly 🤣
Very informative and nicely flown! Makes me want to start my instrument training.
Thanks!
Thanks! Instrument flying is really fun! I highly recommend. And I've gotten addicted to not having to find the airport! It just shows up right in front of me! 😂😂🤣🤣
Thanks for the video. Nice flight and nice video. I really liked the text narration.
Thanks, Evan.
I did this a lot when I started my instrument training. It’s a great way to see the “why” behind the procedures, practice buttonology, and get a good idea of pitch/power/performance settings
💯I really wish I would have started doing these a lot earlier - even before I started full fledged instrument training. I think I could have saved a lot by not trying to introduce the procedures, the buttonology AND the hood all at once.
Nice video. I especially liked the text box commentaries to keep me in the loop.
Always a debate on whether to do voiceover or text. Not sure which would have been better.
@@1dullgeek I like the text so we can hear the normal ATC communications and you talking to the camera; but that's just my opinion. You do a great job of mixing the content.
Dull geek - this is a great video man 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
The level of detail and interaction is fantastic to see. I’m student ppl with no intention of IFR but this is very impressive. You have come on sooooo much and sooo far you are a credit to your family and a great insertion to us all. We’ll done DG and keep it up
I don’t care what your videos are about, they have a real feeling to them, not too polished and clearly loads of work gone into them, but they feel more watchable than some other videos.
I tip my hat to you sir!

Thanks, Scott. I appreciate the kind words very much. As I understand it, you have a "restricted instrument rating" in the UK that we don't have in the states. Obviously get your PPL first, but consider instrument, too. I can't believe how many more opportunities to fly and use the airplane for travel it's opened up.
And thanks for the kind words about my videos. Much appreciated! 💙🙏
I'm just starting to do this so this video was super helpful.
Nice! Glad it helped.
Thanks for posting this. I’m starting instrument training in the next few months and seeing you talk through and demonstrate approaches is helpful.
Oh cool! Thanks for saying something. I'm glad this was helpful.
Take a lesson or two, then do this. That way you’ll have an idea of procedures, speeds, etc. Use it as a chance to learn buttonology, see the big picture, and get an idea of pitch/power/performance settings

I enjoyed the video. When I was training for IFR, I flew a lot of practice approaches myself and it really helped me. I flight a lot of my practice approaches now at night. I'll file IFR and make landings at two different airports along with my home airport so I'll get some IFR practice, maybe some actual, and extend my night currency all at the same time.
Yeah I didn't know that I was allowed to fly VFR practice approaches before I got my instrument ticket. Being able to practice this on my own was a real game changer for my instrument training.
I do also like practicing instrument at night. I like the idea of actually landing though so that I can also get my night currency.
Great video. I learned a a bit even though you said it was not instructional. Enjoyed it.
I'm glad it was helpful.
One other thought, I was wondering why you activated "vectors to final" on your GPS. My CFI pointed out that if you do that, and they re-route you to a fix on the approach, you have to scramble to re-load everything. What I do instead is activate the leg (i.e. from the IAF to the FAF) even if I'm getting vectors. Thanks for sharing this video. Very helpful and I really liked how you had the second camera on the instrument panel/GPS.
Yeah I had that discussion with @thebadgerpilot. And the conclusion we came to is that's a very good idea in a 430/530 series gps because reloading the entire thing is a lot more button clicks. But I. The GPS175 (and similar) it's not really any more button clicks to reload the approach than to activate a different leg.
But it is a good idea regardless. And prior to that discussion I'd never heard of that.
Well done! I'm looking forward to being able to do this myself someday.
Thanks. And I look forward to watching that happen!
Nice work
Thank you!
2 other comments… when you were switched to vectors, there are those (myself included) who would argue for activating a leg of the approach instead of activating vectors to final. It’s the same end result but keeps further out waypoints loaded in case you suddenly get a “direct to” instruction. Also, I guarantee the controllers will remember your tail number and that you played nice with the Citation, and they will likely be more likely to approve things in the future where if you caused a go around or breaking off, they’d remember that and would probably put you behind the Citation next time. Awesome job!
Hmmm.. 🤔. That's not something I'd considered.
Out of curiosity has that scenario happened to you, where you're on vectors and they switch you to a fix? I've never encountered it before.
Maybe it's a Charlotte thing, but the controllers around here seem to much prefer vectors over the full approach. I think it gives them a lot more flexibility to get people slotted into a space. Which might be why I've never encountered a switch from vectors to a fix.
And thanks!
It hasn’t yet to me, and from where you were on base, where the FAF would be the next fix anyway, it’s an identical scenario. It comes into play when you’re looking at a long dog-leg and beyond the intermediate fix. If you were cleared to the IF, you can just hit “direct” instead of reloading the approach first. Controllers have been pretty good lately though about things like “fly heading 120 expect *waypoint* shortly”. I listen to LiveATC a lot and hear stuff like that quite a bit
@@thebadgerpilot Ahh. I see.
Nice!
Thanks
I liked this video, Im interested in the gps procedure. My radio is starting to get weak so I’m going to dive into an upgrade and make my 140 ifr certified. I started studying for the ifr test and as soon as I get everything installed I’ll start training
Ok. Gotcha. Maybe a video on how I program the gps.
11:50 "hold you for 15 minutes", yikes.
13:10 "I sat down after..", just interesting to get the behind the scenes.
I liked the red rings. and I noticed they were motion-tracked.
Yes I'm getting pretty good at picking some good things for motion tracking to work.
I actually considered trying to make it so that when my hand passed in front of the rings, that they'd get hidden by my hand. To try and make it look like the rings were painted on to the panel, but that seemed a bit much.

Thank you! 😂
Awesome video!!! Always looking forward to your posts! I fly a 1966 cherokee 140 and shoot my approaches with 1 notch of flaps (flaps10) and that gets me at desired 90kts… have you tried 1 vs 2 flaps?
Yes and I prefer 2 notches because I'm flying slower making it easier to stay on course and glide path. But I didn't seem to have much problem with that on the second approach so maybe I could do that. In training 2 notches was easier. So I stuck with it.
Also, if you get a chance to record an ILS or VOR approach simulating GPS failure I am sure that would be really helpful for instrument students and other instrument rated pilots
Oh! That's a good idea.
I'm not sure I could do this. My GPS is my DME. 🤔
Yea you are right… i guess the only back up would be a radar approach or you could do a timed VOR/LOC… scary situation for sure!
