- It seems like it was only yesterday when fans considered Shane Dawson a beloved figure. These days he seems to be public enemy number 1. That’s no surprise once you learn what kind of controversy he’s going through. However, what makes this situation strange is that he’s apologized for this before. As a matter of fact, the apologies were well received at the time. Today, we’re going to discuss how this cancellation is different.

One thing I will say about this is that in order for it to be massive (like Shane Dawson status), David has to start uploading on UA-cam again. Right now people don't really care about him because he stopped what he was known for which is vlogging. So, because his popularity is down (somewhat), drama channels don't care about reporting the story.

I was about to comment that psychirl is right!
Reputation means everything on UA-cam, the reason Onision was ignored when he accused Shane, was because he ALSO has a history of sexualizing minors and hating on Shane because of envy. Tati was also ignored because of her controversy with James Charles, showing the viewers that she isn't a trustworthy source. Not saying the evidence shown doesn't hold up that Shane is a weirdo, just my thoughts as to why people didn't take the accusations from these people too seriously.
It's hard to take people seriously who don't take things seriously.
It's hard to be a trustworthy source when you're being fed lies and being manipulated by Jeffree star. She was egged on, Shane offered to edit her video. Jeffree is the one who messaged drama channels, I've seen the receipts, the videos are out there. so when Shane in his insta live video yells "BECAUSE YOU MESSAGED THE DRAMA CHANNELS" He was wrong, it was Jeffree who tipped them off of her video before she even filmed it. Since tati decided not to be in Shane's docu they (him and Jeffree) had to switch gears and reconfigure their plan. Its well known that Jeffree enjoys taking down his competition, even a 19 year old. Tati was just a pawn in Jeffree scheme. And I think Shane was also a pawn. Although, Shane has his own pile of dirty laundry to deal with right now and I'm not excusing any of the sick things from his passed, Jeffree manipulated him into this too. Jeffree saw Shane as a money maker. Shane was making make up as a short lived passion, but Jeffree is the one making bank off it. In conclusion, Jeffree star is the epicenter of every drama and scandal involving the beauty community. Whether he starts it, eggs it on, or inserts himself in drama that doesn't even involve him, he is the one causing all of this toxicity. Shane isn't innocent, but he was manipulated too. tati has a big heart and it bit her in the ass, as it does with anyone with a big heart. You get taken advantage of.

Bruh Moment Especially since she wasn’t from the US, she admitted herself that she didn’t know the n word was a big deal in the US, which it is because of our history with slavery.
I used to watch him 2008-2010, and he had offensive characters like shanaynay back then. Not that those skits are excusable, but they really were a product of the time. I saw racist, sexist, etc. skits or scenes of shows like madtv and family guy on cable tv all the time, and it really seemed like only a minority of people cared because shock humor was everywhere and socially accepted overall.
I stopped watching youtube for awhile and revisited his channel around 2013 and couldn't believe he was doing blackface and some of the jokes he made. Even with offensive humor being so normalized years prior, he definitely took it beyond even that style of humor which is a feat imo. I think even if he had done those skits when offensive/shock humor was at its height, it wouldn't have been appealing to most people. AND NO ONE WAS SAYING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. Not even on websites like tumblr which was majorly into social justice at the time. At least from what I saw/searched.
But I didn't hear much about him at all at the time tbh. I think that's the major distinction - he wasn't nearly as popular back then as he was recently, and the people who watched him at the time did so because they enjoyed that "humor" and therefore wouldn't have criticism to give. I wonder if he would ever be cancelled if he had not dramatically changed his content style and maintained lower viewership. Theoretically, he could have done his minstrel shows and pedophilic "jokes" for many years with little backlash.

They were probably looking for the nostalgia feeling of being a kid who didn't know any better watching him. I think people mix up nostalgia for how you perceived something in the past for the "old version" of someone/something.
I think your prediction about the beloved David Dobrik’s façade dropping could be true.
My thoughts: I used to be a HUGE fan of the vlog squad from like 2016-2019 and used to watch them since vine. After a while, I noticed how David’s disregard for his friends safety and the looking glass broke. I’m not surprised they’ve been exposed for this, David’s borderline sociopathic behaviour Is excuses because he posted quick, digestible content with catchy relèvent music. Any young people watching him are drawn in that way, ESPECIALLY with all the current music he uses in his vlogs. His vlogs are reliable and consistent and short; making them more entertaining to his viewers. Additionally, the dependency and belittling his friends put themselves thru for his vlogs was a red flag to me. It’s like there’s s mutual exploitive relationship between them. The friends get used as content and their safety/ health is risked for the vlog, in return they’re gaining a following who wants to know more about David so they sub to his friends. And his friends get rewarded for risking themselves with expensive cars. On their own, the friends without David aren’t desired or interesting enough for them to have the same following as David. They can’t copy his style of vids or they’ll be called out. They’re pawns, very funded pawns. Also, there’s competition between the friends and with themselves on who can be the most outlandish and end up in the vlog, this lead the to do inappropriate things and risk themselves further, that’s how they’re brand has been established. E.g. Zayn is always the drunk one, Korinna is the ‘hoe’, Toddy is a fuckboy etc. Their self value and esteem somewhat relies on the attention they get from the vlog also, with how much they comprise themselves. It’s sad. The only reason they’re getting that attention is because ppl want to get to know them to get closer to David.
I’m not a fan of Trish at ALL, but the second she spoke out against them I knew there more than what she was saying and I believe her. The vlog squad is a relatively cute young guy recording his friends doing increasingly more dangerous , inappropriately and compromising things, editing it down to 4min and 20sec with catching music at the end or the little montage. Once they turn 30+ they’ll look back and see they basically were used, abused and exploited. This mode of media WONT last, it won’t be funny when they’re 40 and Jason is 60. It’s so sad that nothing sustainable will come out of this, it’s only here thought of for the moment. THATS when the looking glass will break for everyone
I feel like I definitely see where people are coming from but like he has said many times “for the most part they are just a normal friend group” but he cuts his videos down so short to all their quick jokes or skits or in some cases, stunts or pranks, and with the fast jumps and the fun music it seems like his real life is constantly that crazy and everyone talks that fast. When you watch, say Jason’s vlog, he and everyone else are a lot more down to earth and chill than what it seems like in David’s vlogs and for the most part they all seem like genuine people, I could be wrong of course. But David has done crazy amounts for charity and is almost known at this point for giving out money to people who need it and/or cars. I definitely see where those things are coming from bc in his vlogs it seems so chaotic, but I think they all kinda put on a show when the camera is on and like he has said before, his vlogs are kinda like movie trailers, it’s the most exciting parts without the long and boring middle section.
There is no bigger tragedy than horrible people calling out other horrible people, no one believes a horrible person when they point fingers, and then the other monsters just get away with it... Until they fuck up somehow.
David’s like the iceman. Read his book. He’s a pimp who did some cold shit to his women and would break them down to the point they were puppets.

Nah, I disagree. I agree that almost every human being has it to some level but you have to understand that its a spectrum. The higher level of that spectrum includes super nice & really sensitive ppl that usually get taken advantage of cos of their high level of empathy. It can be such a pain in the ass, most humans don't have this level of empathy hence why 'true empaths' or some ppl may act like its rare
I feel so betrayed. He was someone I liked to watch when the recession hit because he felt so relatable. I was a 12 year old kid who grew up online and knew that the edgy humor was just what was trending. I feel disgusted knowing I laughed at his old content. He just is such a huge letdown. He talked so much about being bullied then his documentary on his film came out and I just was like “did I just get gaslit?” Like. Idk how to feel anymore. Is he just a character?

I don’t think he’s lying about that in particular, but I still think he’s not as nice as he says he is. I’m annoyed that a lot of people are pointing out that jeffree isn’t supporting Shane as much as he did for him. If my friend did anything remotely like Shane I wouldn’t just blindly defend their actions just because we’re friends. I always wished Shane kept doing videos like the series with Molly Burke. It was a wonderful heartwarming series that not only introduced me to a wonderful content creator but opened mine to what life is like to be blind. Shane got sucked up into drama and the fame and the power went to his head, what a shame.
His manipulation is almost incredible. How he has swayed an audience of millions to form an almost army-like defensive loyalty is appauling and stunning. Curious

I do want to point out that empaths aren't really a thing. "Empathy" itself is a thing all humans have, and we feel it to varying degrees because we can relate to experiences people are going through (even if we've never been in it).
But yeah Shane calling himself an empath 3-5 times in five minutes in a video doesn't mean shite, if anything it was him gripping onto an idea to make people like him more and feel special (in my opinion, can't know for sure since I'm not him).
Hope you're good friend, don't judge yourself for falling for his crap too much, the majority of youtube did honestly.

D’Angelo Wallace did an in-depth video on Shane’s odd behavior (I strongly recommend it). I personally think that Shane should be deplatformed considering he abused the system for years.
Edit: I’ve been thinking about the idea of deplatforming. As an audience, we can’t really decide who gets a platform and who doesn’t. However, we can decide which people we watch. So, if we don’t like a person/ don’t want to support them, we just stop interacting with their content. We stop giving them money and views.

Bobby really thought Shane was offering him his big break. Even though finances were tight and it was super risky, he took a chance on Shane's promises, uprooted himself and moved to LA with his girlfriend, to work with Shane, from one day to another. Away from his brother, though the three of them had been making the videos together for years.
Shane never provided Bobby with that platform. Instead, he manipulated his audience to hate Bobby and attack him.
His girlfriend was heavily demonized online. They broke up.
Bobby genuinely believed Shane and trusted him.
Honestly, it's been horrible to watch. I genuinely feel bad for Bobby. There's been some real damage done.

Right! Ngl I’m pretty vindicated with this whole situation because I got into some arguments with people who were defending him back when the Tana controversy was going down. All his supporters were spouting this rhetoric that nothing he did was actually his fault, he’s too sweet if he does something wrong it’s because he’s being manipulated by his mean youtube friends. It confused me, because it seemed obvious to me that the 30-something man was responsible for his own shitty behavior, no matter how he tried to spin it.
I think some of this is because people chalk it up to him being more flamboyant, but us flamboyant guys aren't all fake af lol. He used that good guy next door persona to get fans. A film UA-camr reviewed a show he was on called The Chair, and I think that super catty/bitchy side of him is a more accurate depiction of him irl.

For me it was that one video where he kept saying "why do i get the controversies" really angrily, and then he just reverts to his "haha im so funny why?". It seemed so odd but a huge red flag too, i hated it.
If you watch any of the videos he made prior to his "documentaries" he's constantly belittling his friends and boyfriend. I remember excusing it as 'a show for the camera' type of attitude, but even his boyfriend has said he treats him worse off camera. He was showing us who he was all along, and many of us fell for the act.

it's so weird because even people my age who've been watching UA-cam for a _long_ time, we knew that Shane had a weird past but a lot of my friends just thought it was looked down upon because it was gross or immature humor and at the time when it was new we were too young to really notice what was happening.

There is no proof. We know Tati lied/was manipulative in the past so I don't take all of her words as gospel. That being said, his past videos were bad enough to warrant his current loss of subscribers.

For every 100,000 that hates a creator, there’s always a 100,000 more that will continue to support that creator. Shane will still have an audience, and will still be able to profit off his content in some way. Sure his reputation will be tainted, but there will still be support, and if not support curiosity following all the drama. He will still have an audience regardless of what he does.
