- Considered the most skill testing/highest skill ceiling/hardest to play deck, Garrote Rogue dominated Hearthstone's competitive scene for a brief period in Hearthstone's history. Here's a retrospective.

Garrote rogue, Demonhunter OTK, Quest Mague, Quest Hunter, Demon Seed Warlock and Owlock are the posterchilds of why people despised United In Stormwind 1 and 2. I'm a Legends of Runaterra player and I remember that people went to LoR during that first year in hordes because people was THAT SICK of Hearthstone's year of the wolf, then quitted once they released discover in bandle and a tier 1 deck in Azir/Irelia who attacked too often.
Honestly, I think appealing to exclusively competitive players is what has killed MANY games back in the day, and while I think too random is not good for a game's health, you as a developer should make *the optimal play reactable* (Not confuse with interaction, you actually despise that considering how bad 6 mana Theotar is) to minimize frustrations. Both charge and *0 mana cards, specially spells, are NOT reactable;* at least Charge can be neutered by taunt but there's literal no counterplay to 0 mana outside value, which is why Mana cheating is broken.
they are starting to put "but no less than one" on a few things but it's a few years too late
This is a really interesting write-up!
You mean the year of the Gryphon maybe? Because we are now in the year of the wolf and last year was of the Hydra
What's interactive about Theotar according to you? Because the effect it's purely one sided.
You take the best card and give your opponent the worst card out of the offered, and your opponent has no say or influence in that.
It's not that we hate interaction, but rather than the ways you interact with your opponent are very limited in a game where you can't play cards or take decisions during your opponent's turn (which MtG and LoR do)
@@lucascanetelara4625 Id guess the fact that they payed 6 mana for it? Considering of course that the 4/4 body may as well be nonexistent if they play it on turn 6 in todays Hearthstone ladder.
Just when I thought it was Chundover, we’re so back
C TO THE H TO THE UN-DO
Honey, quick, new Chundo vid just dropped!!
We chundback*
A Chundo Masterpiece to end the year on a high note
: )
Thaurisan was at 6 mana, so 4 more expensive than octobot. He was buffed to 5 for twist.
Ohhhh right. I had it as 6 mana in the script but then I looked up the card and thought I misremembered
Love to watch this deck/card essays you make, please keep doing them!
Will do!
First time viewer, this analytical look at hearthstone history was really fascinating, especially in a time when I had a break from it. I am now glad that I had, and that I watched this.
Also, I have been sufficiently guilt tripped. Well played good sir, +1 Sub
everything I do is to guilt trip
That vicious syndicate quote is talking about the version of the deck with gadgetzan Auctioneers and a bunch of spells, not the field contact version
That is true but it was also saying that the archetype didn’t have room to grow. I was being a little overly dramatic
for what it's worth, I really like your channel and when I first saw it I knew that this was my favourte type of content and subbed
I’m glad you found it!
unironically got super excited when i saw this vid in my youtube feed
WELCOME BACK CHUNDO 🔛🔝
THANK YOU!
A chundo's masterpiece the last day of the year :) So much love
Thanks!
Just got back into hearthstone after 4 years a few weeks ago and I got recommended this video. I am now subbed and hope you pop off. This is a fantastic video.
Thanks for the kind words! Have fun!
Garrote rogue is kinda back in wild. Toy boat is a lower cost field contact that works off of summons, so the deck is super reliant on drawing toy boat.
Trickster is a 3 mana +2 spell damage minion that allows for the combo to exist. Shadow of demise plays a copy of the spell. The normal rogue draw tools like secret passage and gear shift are combined with dig for treasure, which can give you coins, quick pick, which which not only draws but also summons pirates off of jolly roger, and shadow step to bounce the boat.
The high roll is you summon a board full of small pirates, possibly buffed by zilliax, and an empty deck to garrote combo. The low roll is you never draw the toy boat and lose.
You are a true gem in the hearthstone community. Don’t stop making videos
Thank you : )
I'm gonna use a Yugioh analogy here but as someone who used to play Vanilla Hearthstone, watching this give me the whiplash of someone who used to play GOAT format suddenly being forced to espectate a Tearlament mirror match-up.
This thing is crazy
The glorious retundo of the chundo
Thank you : )
It’s a good thing Chundo didn’t abandon the channel for months unlike that other guy who he mentioned in the video.
Hypothetical hypothetical
I would like to offer my opinion: regis has never been good at this game and it's baffling to me that he's never gotten any better over the years. Subscribe to chundo
True he is very bad Lol, i mean hes cool and deserves his community but its also crazy to me how he cannot learn to play even 10 years later

Il'gynoth... Damn card was a straight up nightmare being played on its entire span only evolving not devolving and I was one of the guys who abused it the most to climb with DH and hit 1K win portrait 😂
Well back then in the tournament it was just a playground for Garrote Rogue, OTK Questline DH, Celestial Nature Druid (sometime Pirate Warrior and Mozaki Mage) and broooo that was a toxic meta I even have PTSD now
I took a break from HS from the end of darkmoon fair till after fractured in alterac valley. Best accidental decision ever
i remember dusting an extra legendary and thinking this was like that one combo card that comes back to your hand
this card left me flabbergasted
This really gives me bad memories on how terribly unbalanced United in Stormwind was. So many people quit during that expansion, and I was one of them. The concepts were good, but many cards were far too overtuned with little balancing ever done to them.
The pve mission where you had to do a garrot otk took me atleast 30 minutes 😅
i didnt really miss the other united in storm wind decks but this deck did have a special place in my heart for awhile, bad for game health yea but i enjoyed comboing
Sad that i never got to play this deck at full power cuz i wasnt playing at the time but i did have fun with the "lite" version of poison rogue
The most skilled deck would be the priest death rattle minion that returns what you cast on it to your hand 0tk. This deck is literally just draw cards and win
I would say dead man’s hand warrior probably as well
Apm priest, yea def harder than this one, people overrate garrote rogue cause the casters at the time used to say how hard it is
Just discovered your channel, great content, not lived this HS moment but I hate DMG from hand decks such as actual naga DH and thaddius sludgelock, hope devs stop supporting that much this mechanic
Yeah it’s usually pretty frustrating to get taken from 30 to 0 in one turn
6:53 you know a card is good when it is in every single archetype of a class in a format that includes every single card printed in the history of the game
the chundoment may have bankrupted chundo incorporated, but you can't keep a good chund down.
have to keep uploaded to pay off my debts to my chundloan sharks
9:03 Hearing that a 2 mana card is too expensive is absolutely comical levels of powercreep.
I was so happy when this deck rotated out of the meta
I was a fan lowkey
i cant believe secret passage used to be five cards. its still insane at four
1:30 seconds into the video and you say traditional HS fans said combo v combo would become the norm that would destroy the classical board control playstyle of HS. And you ask if they were. YES! YES they were. And this shift killed HS.
I played HS since the beta. Loved it back then and played for like 3 years consecutively. Since then I would always quit and come back after a while, play for a couple of months and quit again. Coming back after United in Stormwind made me think I was playing a different game. There was no counter play or thought anymore. It was just which one of us gets their cards first? And unfortunately it seems HS dev team is fine with exactly that type of gameplay...
God I needed chundo sooooo bad
This was during the time period when I was exclusively a BG player. Thank God I never experienced this happen to me
Best hs channel tbh needs more subscrunders
Hearthstone always had decks that was difficult to pilot and had very high winrates, but was brought down by people who didn't knew how to pilot it... and because of it also made other worse decks seems better... it was always rocks paper and scissors, jsut more complex and cooler.
< certified chundohead
instant sub. I loved this deck along with libram paladin. pen flinger was so much fun to play with in both of those decks, even if it was a little unhealthy for the meta. do we even want an unnerfed pen flinger in wild? 🤔
Pen flinger was an all timer
Can you explain why pen flinger was unhealthy for the meta?
The main class that used it was paladin, and the only reason it was so good, was because of the basically infinite 0 cost librams
I'd say that the issue was that it could do face damage, so that sort of infinite combo created a pretty poor play experience. That and the tilting voiceline (HEY LOSER!) contributed to a play pattern that Blizzard didn't like.@@HaloNeInTheDark27
The classic chundozer sweep
never truly chundo her
Warlock currently has a deck that’s like this with sludge. They get thad and spam a bunch of sludge
We're so back
the indomitable human spirit
I love minion based decks! (Pay no attention to the Sludge fatigue Warlock deck I’m currently playing with)
everyone sneaks a little combo now and then
Chundo time is the best time.
chumdo
I saw the title and thumbnail. Now after agreeing, I have to watch the video and like against my will without even hearing your voice.
Thé return of Chuns
yes! new chundo!
: )
downloaded hearthstone just to play this deck again
The backround music is a bit too loud.
Noted!
WE LOVE YOU CHUNDO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!
Good stuff 👍
Thanks 👍
🗣️🗣️🗣️ NEW CHUNDO VIDEO!!!
YOU KNOW IT
NEW SUB it is ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AWESOME!!!!
Even though Bolner Shaman ran an OTK combo it played like a midrange deck thanks to cards like snowfall and the spell that summoned 3/4s. You rarely got to pull of the combo simce you had no way to fetch the pieces and rarely got that late into the game
Gadgetzan Auctioneer actually costs 7 mana now...
Love this essay, even if you "abandoned" us for a month or so. Don't worrry though we'll be here to enjoy your content :)
Can’t leave anybody hungry for chundo
This reminds me at what Rarran used to be
Chundo!
AudibleShrug!
How to see all VS reviews?
Usually the have a “vicious syndicate preview” before every new expansion on their website
is it really pronounced with a "rot" sound? i always went with "rote"
More make more
where's my auctioneer :(
WINDMILL IS FREE AT LAST
Only reason I uploaded
Chunded and Chunscribed. Chungotte Rogue good?
Chundastic.
It's prounced Gerrote
HOLY MOLY!!!! :3
:3
if only blizzard didnt convert that game into a money farm :/
edit: i subscribed to chundo and so should you
Nice video, but 18 minutes for this? Aint no way chief. Keep em shorter, 11-13.
Input taken!
The deck was not so hard to play tbh or it is because i main rogue, dunno
I always got confused personally on when to summon augmerchants for tempo
Its a little overrated for sure
very good video, but most skilled deck in game? meh, it's too big exaggeration, but I guess nice clickbait. Still like the video and keep doing what you doing )))
What is the most skilled iyo?
You gotta spice it up sometimes - but I think it has a fair case
Definetely not the hardest
obvious and definitive proof that classic was a better format
The game design literacy of the average person in these comments trying to talk about why this meta sucked is pretty fascinating. Like the problem was never game balance but damn if people don't keep talking about balance lol.
auctioner 7 mana
Chundo is no longer Donedo
I chunDo what I can
❤
Worse yet, Thaurissan cost 6 when he was in Standard
Another great video! I hated this fucking deck.
what a fun deck, a bit sad to think this meta is history now. ive moved on the better things then hearthstone cardgame wise but im glad it was so fundamental to me getting into them and learning them
I love you
As a Wild player, can't we just remove Year of the Gryphon cards from existence?
It was a CRAZY sequence of releases
