It's always so *insane* to see videos from Kibler just 5 years ago when he looks 27, and now he literally looks like he is a 75 year old scholar in ancient Sumerian
I used to write Hearthstone articles to the biggest HS site in Brazil, when I rated Caverns Below a full 5 out 5 stars, the community made fun until the set was released. I told them, that card is broken and it was. Fantastic card, fantastic design, but I would have fixed that card by only giving the creatures a buff and not permanently letting them be 5/5 or 4/4. Nice video!
One must wonder whether the designers of the card looked upon it with pride as it stayed relevant despite the gimping or as an abomination for no matter how many times they tried to decimate the thing it crawled back from the pit (sometimes with some atrocious grafts to compensate) committing absurdities and outright upsets for multiple expansions.
I feel like they wouldn’t have minded if it was good for just a couple expansions. I think once it got to Boomaday and then Rastakhan’s, they started looking at it more like the invincible creature you’re talking about
Caverns Below also got a third nerf in Standard, although only an under-the-hood one. The aura of Crystal Core used to overwrite Sonya Shadowdancer's effect, so she would add 4/4s to your hand instead of 1/1s. I think that happened very shortly before rotation. I only remember it because I absolutely hated that deck and was over the moon to see it hit again.
I will not forget the day Caverns below came out and watching HSdogdog's stream playing quest Rogue. Everyone thought the deck was a meme especially Dog. Although he kept winning almost all his matches he kept downplaying the deck probably due to disbelief that the deck everyone thought was terrible might just be the best deck.
@@mrchundo I still play hearthstone after 8 years so I really don't mind looking back and see what's changed or check some nostalgic stuff. Your move is okay :D Well made video, surely not what I've expected from the subs count. :D
This was a bit of a walk down memory lane. I first started taking hearthstone seriously around ungoro, and stopped playing around the release of rise of shadows. So to me, this was the meta I knew and played and have memories of. Super cool video 😁
maybe im just a scumbag but this was my favorite card of all time. just super fun to play around with all of rogues unique bounces, and the reward was... obviously well worth it lol. I think it is important to note though that as much as people remember this era of hearthstone for certain aggro decks, there were some pretty brutal control metas with some of the most AGONIZING control decks to ever play against. Raza priest, Cubelock, and like any slow Druid deck from the time.... no matter how much people hated quest rogue, it truly was a necessary evil. Great video once again mate.
its a very unique playstyle that was invented in classic yet has continued to become relevant again and again, even having to get nerfed once blizzard decided to actually push it as an archetype. admittedly im biased af cuz its a personal fav but felt like throwing out an idea. fr tho any video of this quality will be very well received by me and others and I will be looking forward to whatever u got in store
I remember me and my buddies opening our packs in chemistry class and my one friend losing his first 4-5 games all to that deck. I‘ll never forget his look as he got absolutely demolished trying to play Taunt Warrior. What a time, so many great memories from back then.
I actually watched your previous video couple of weeks ago and couldn’t finish it. Will watch the other ones but this is just perfect. You have great potential. I saw similar videos regarding yu-gi-oh and magic but never anything like this about hs. I could literally watch another hour of this and I wouldn’t been bored. I want more!)
Great video. You have a good voice and you keep it very straight forward without throwing in all this unnecessary editing or humor. I don't play hs anymore but the history of metas I didn't get to see is really interesting. Hilarious that I did play during witchwood and boomsday but I was so low rank that I never even saw quest rogue lol.
I love how this is a 20 minute video about the performance of a questline deck, but the few seconds where patches getting nerfed is mentioned is the most replayed section
Thanks! Big spell mage is interesting with how long people were joking about it with arcane brilliance not having an 8 mana target in Standard but yeah, Balinda is really good
Please make more videos like this! It's really joyful watching these hearthstone history videos. I'm gonna sub for more videos like this! Also, history video idea: Grim Patreon (EVERYONE! GET IN HERE!!)
This card was bonkers. I remember joining a regional tournament for lulz during ungoro days and was the only one who brought a caverns deck. Ended up getting top seed the first day and finishing 1st runner up on the last day.
There was one more nerf to the deck after it rotated out of standard. Blizzard changed now the aura works and now you can silence the minions to remove the effect.
I noticed they unnerfed the Quest and started playing it in Wild again. It's a new set of cards now that you use but I won 10 in a row and 14/15 games so far. It seems even more busted than before and you can complete the Quest by Turn 5 almost every game.
I would love to see a history of priest before the times of Big, Resurrect and such. Dragon Priest (with Drakonid Enforcer, my beloved), Kazakus, those were some really fun decks that I feel the new priest decks just cant come close to (except if Harvester of Envy decks actually worked). Probably a way too wide scope, but Dragon Priest itself would be really nice to see something about again.
Great video. Maybe next we can go to Patron Warrior or some other abomination like even and odd decks. Heck, maybe some variant of Warlock, such as cubelock or handlock or even zoolock. I love remembering what was imo the golden age of hearthstone (year of the mammoth and earlier) and I would be here for the ride whenever you made this types of video. It was super well made :D
The deck is now underrated in wild, with my buddy we've been hitting diamond 5 regularly with our own Renathal version of the deck, it's still a blast to play and surprisingly not that op against some of the strongest combos you can now see in wild
Hot take: One of my favorite cards in hearthstone. Super different way to play the game and honestly really fun to play. A lot of people like to criticize the design but the issue with the caverns below was always one of power. Decks that punish control decks are completely fine, see the rise of shadows meta where warrior would lose to absolute meme garbage. The issue is when those decks don’t get punished by aggro, either cuz the deck is too strong or the meta’s too slow. I always hated fighting control decks so it was perfect for me. And playing quest rogue vs aggro is so engaging. Figuring out exactly how greedy you can play to survive without using too many resources to stabilize afterwards was one of the most fun and rewarding skills to develop. 10/10 card, just slightly imbalanced.
@Chundo cubelock was actually a hard counter to quest rogue after it went from 5/5 to 4/4, because quest rogue had no answer for the death knight summoning a bunch of doomguards.
i don't remember any even pally lists. "1 mana 1/1's"? odd pally was huge, but am i missing something? was there a mini meta where even pally actually existed?
The annoying side of quest rogue that off meta decks that tend to be B or C tiers quickly become F tier because rogue quest existence. And there were alot of them in unrank and ladders.
I know HS is kind of a dying game, but the history and personalities are really the best part. I barely play now, but I still love the game. Who knew video essays on HS could be so good. Keep up the good work man.
I feel so much regret for not coming back to this game during these expansions as how the game is now I hate it with how strong cards are and I have yet to try out classic but I doubt it's any good. I disenchanted a lot of my old cards on my old account and started from a fresh one because it didn't give my old account the offer for free cards even tho I hadn't played in several years. Really just a lot of shitty feelings over this game.
I miss the days when there was diversity in the game. There is no true control archetype. They actively removed fatigue as a mechanic. There are no value battles. It's hyper aggro or otk combos. Now i like otks, but they don't require any setup these days. They just print crazu cards that just make it happen if drawn in sequence. I don't hate the game now, but it was better before they changed the game to never make it past turn 8. It's less skill and more draw rng now. Which was already a hs problem, now made worse.
