I agree. Reading is reading. With your eyes. Audio is listening.
when blind people "read" brail... did they read it?
@@MAYBE_4EV3RI feel that's a question Pete would ask!😊
@@dewarsbramangus what about when you are a child and maybe your mother reads Charlotte's Web or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to you... didn't you "read" it together?
@@dewarsbramangus what about body language? does a person read another persons state of being or threat with no words, and sometimes even no visual... say its a dark room in a haunted house and the person your with squeezes your hand tighter.. did you read that or what is that called? im just having fun with the semantics of reading
I think it's just semantics. Just different modes. But i agree reading is for the eyes.
Reading is reading. Listening is listening. I do both at different times of day.
I recently listened to 1984 ... highly recommend!
I have that in my audible library !😊
I read every night before bed! Good for the mind. And you’re NOT stupid!💙
Just be honest and say, "I listened to that book." Interesting that people hide it.
or "i read an audiobook" (?) i know it sounds odd but so was the idea of audiobooks not so long ago so it's a new thing, new language, if u know what i mean? It's less 'clunky'
I’m visually impaired and I listen to books. I used to read a novel in a few days. Old age… I don’t recommend it. Lol!
I’ve done both… reading is great but, now that I’m in my 50’s and have lost my peripheral vision it does affect my ability to focus. So, I read much slower than I used to. Audiobooks are helpful when I need to get through the book in a shorter amount of time.
I am rereading 1984 and keep having 2024 flashes 😮
It's absolutely normal
I'm currently reading "My Effin' Life" by Rush bassist Geddy Lee. It is very well written, it takes you through every emotion, it is extremely interesting, and a book you never want to put down. I highly recommend it to everyone, not just for the Rush fans. There is so much in there...something for everyone.
AWESOME! THANKS! LOVE GEDDY LEE! ❤
Agree 100%, Reading is much better because you learn more that way by seeing the words in print. It improves your vocabulary and grammar and spelling as well.
Active reading has stronger retention to active listening. That said, knowledge, understanding and application do not favor either, it becomes how you learn best. Looking forward to seeing you in Raleigh! You are one of the best!
I retain more listening to books and that’s why Audible
Lol audiobooks are just so I can Keep reading when I'm inconvenienced by driving!
You are either reading or you’re listening … you’re a listener, not a reader.
@@johnalbert5786 bah, semantics.
@@sissinoklahoma2057… bah!… “semantics “ doesn’t fit here.
Did you watch the Game ?… or listen to the game?
Not really the same.
You can read or you can listen, not the same thing. 😊
@johnalbert5786
Semantics is the study of meaning in language. It can be applied to entire texts or to single words. For example, "destination" and "last stop" technically mean the same thing, but students of semantics analyze their subtle shades of meaning.
You are consuming a story - were your eyes or ears engaged? Same result.
@@sissinoklahoma2057… not sure how you think it’s semantics apply here, but ok.
Listening is not reading and reading isn’t listening.
I just love listening to you… and laughing! Rock on!! 🫶🏻🙏
I was just discussing this with my dad! I agree that listening is not reading. I have no problem with listening, but reading isn't the same thing. It ain't right!
I do both at the same time. Basically have it read to me as I look at the pages. Like a giant child being read a bedtime story.
Cool! Never thought of that!
That’s reading
I read out loud to myself esp if I find my mind wandering too much!
@@Doggieworld3Show did you read the comment correctly?
I’ll read a few chapters of a book throughout the day and then I’ll listen to the chapters I read on audio book while I’m trying to fall asleep. It’s like a sleeping pill.
I can’t read …so, I watch books instead.
I feel the same, reading is reading and listening is listening. I find if I only listen I don’t pay as much attention to it, then it becomes background noise. But I did find audio books helpful when I read through Shakespeare. I had the audiobook playing while I read along. Definitely helped with pronunciations and understanding the dialogue of the time period.
I have been reading mostly classics the past few years, right now I’m reading “Don Quixote”.
I listen to books read by the author, I just finished listening to Spare read by the author! My eyesight is not as good as it used to be so it can be very frustrating reading small print!
I think regardless of how the information is consumed, you can still say you “read” that book. You’re still able to comprehend the words & participate in conversation surrounding the book.
Why not be honest and say you listened to someone else read to you ? 🥸
Everyone learns and comprehends differently. Some people prefer audio because that's how they can perceive it better and then some people like to have a tangible book in their hand and use a highlighter pen, that makes them absorb the Intel better. Florence Schovel Shinn, her books will change your life!
Near somebody reading a book. A rare sighting.
My favorite audio book is “The power of Now” written and narrated by Eckhart Tolle.. changed my life, literally
I wholeheartedly agree. As a single father in his late 30s, I tried listening to an audiobook recently and it just wasn’t working. I ordered Johnny Carson‘s biography on eBay for four dollars shipped to my door and I’m looking forward to reading that.
listening mainly falls under some type of presetting, such as the proposals and the vocal stress, while in one's own preview, he had the choices and time to contemplate and make his own beliefs and predictions. listening would also be beneficial and a time saver for certain books if it had a good manifestation.
Listening is a good tool if you’re driving daily or on vacation in a car bus plane. Less eye strain too.
I think I agree. Audiobooks are common enough that you can say you listened to a book without getting a load of grief. Two books I'm reading (or trying to 😆) are "Functional and Evolutionary Ecology of Fleas: A Model for Ecological Parasitology" and "Indoor Air Quality Handbook".
Many people consider audio books as reading the books.
I gave my m-i-l a CD player and audiobooks before she completed her life's journey. She loved the Grisham novels. Happy listening!
what about blind people? I mean I mostly agree with you but what do you call it when you feel the words instead of seeing them? did they not receive the information? or what if they heard the word because they couldn't see or feel it? I mean I get it I think the argument is semantics that are distracting us from the important point... did the "reader" receive the message? thats all that matters
I'm reading Patti Smith's memoir about her early life in New York, 'Just Kids.' It's so good. And by the by, I just got my tickets for your show. I can't wait to see it. You absolutely rock! PS I'm sure the people on the Warner Brothers tour recognized you.
As a heavy audio book listener, I say NO. I always tell people that I am listening to a book. Just finished listening to Duma Key and started The Night Circus
“Nor-fork, Virginia”
Just finished, 'A Gentleman in Moscow', brilliant book! Don't think Sebastian would care about it though lol
Some people are better auditory and others better visually. Others kinesthetic etc. It’s working with how your brain is wired. If you both know the whole same story at the end what’s the difference? Bookworm and avid reader for many years and now an audiobook fan. I suppose while learning to read, seeing the words is important. Interesting topic…
it is indeed an interesting topic and it made me realise we haven't really thought about a term for this fairly new sensation. yeah it's been around for a while, but it's also really taken off, so there's that too. i propose we use the term "I read an audiobook today" it's smoother, less clunkier than "I listened to an audiobook today" that way no one can accuse u of lying/hiding and it's clear and concise (unlike my comment sorry head hurts).
"I drive da freakin' honeywagon, with da toilets in da rooms!"
I agree. I just finished Claire Keegan's book, SMALL THINGS LIKE THESE. The movie, taken from the book, will start Cillian Murphy. I then bought and am reading her earlier book of short stories, ANTARTICA, which is a gem! I'm half Sicilian, half Irish. I'm proud of my hybrid background.
I’m looking at the beautiful red interior !!
I agree that they are two totally different approaches. Reading a book or magazine is exercise for the brain. You not only are using your sight but also imagining the scenery, dialogue, and/or action going on. Exercising your brain as well as your body is important especially as you are aging.
That said, I realize that everyone has different needs and abilities. So I always say, “Whatever works for you!”.
I’m reading various stories online. The actual book that I’m going though is “Charlie’s Good Tonight: The Life, The Times, and The Rolling Stones” by Paul Sexton. It’s an authorized biography of Charlie Watts.
Sebastian is 100% right. I read all the time, actually reading the words in a book. It's great for the mind, your vocabulary, your imagination.
Right now, I'm enjoying Sanctuary, by William Faulkner.
I 100% agree with you Sebastian . I am reading meditations of Marcus Aurelius
I listen to books while I walk. I walk a couple miles a few times a day and that’s a lot of time. I’m a student and have a lot of books that are part of my classes so it helps me to stay current on my reading plan. I often have the audio for a book on my phone at the same time I am reading the text. I have adult ADHD and it is very helpful to listen as it keeps me from being distracted, which is a real problem otherwise. Either way, I say I am reading the book. I don’t think it’s better to read than listen, it’s just a different way to learn.
Same. I totally agree.
I do both. Sometimes when I'm doing something else, I listen to a book. It's hard to read mowing the lawn. I read when I really don't want to be bothered doing anything else. Last book "I read" was 40 years on the frontier, last book I "listened to" was sole survivor. I like true stories and adventure stories. Other then that, I'll read technical manuals but I'll watch an associated how to show on UA-cam.
The Comfort Crisis and Anxious Generation are two great books I “listened” do out of convenience lol. But highly recommend both 😂
I like the tactile feel of turning the page, as I read. I like the Bosch books and Lincoln Lawyer books, both written by Michael Connelly. I also like the Jack Reacher books.
I use audiobooks in the background when I do mindless chores. So, I think visual reading is usually a more immersive task. That might be the difference.
You're right!
reading is reading listening is listening. I do both but prefer the audio, I get distracted too easily with reading. But when I read ‘where the crawdads sing’ it reignited my love to read and I have been reading more since.
For those who can read, it's a wonderful thing. For those whose eyesight may be failing, audio books are the next best thing.
I’m reading “The Louding Voice”. It’s been a great read so far. I think you should read it
I read mostly and don't absorb it like I would if I was reading. Audio books get interrupted by all the stimuli around you .. harder to concentrate. Reading a book called 'You're not sick you're thirsty'.
this was a great question! i was thinking about this myself, after listeening to alot of podcast, bible, sermons and audiobooks. Still remember the bible say "Faith cometh by hearing"..so just hearing stories - is no less value then reading it.
Hey Sebastian. Will be enjoying you in Vancouver this fall. Currently Reading (actually turning pages) :
The Creative Act-Rick Rubin, Meditations-Marcus Aurelius and Hospicing Modernity-Vanessa Machado de Oliviera. Always 3 books at a time. In between watching Bookie.
Headed to LA late July so Bookie is like travel research😜
When I have time at the end of the day to sit and read, I read. When I’m at work or driving, I listen to an audiobook.
My husband usually listens to books. I tell people he’s the most “well-listened” person I know.
If you’re listening to a book you’re basically watching a movie with no picture. Like when the tube blew out on your TV.
I liked Naval Ravikant’s comment on this: “Listening to books instead of reading them is like drinking your vegetables instead of eating them.”
No way... not reading!
I love Sebastian and Pete first of all. Second, i dont see it as a smart/dumb thing. To read, for the most part, you are sitting still, focusing your eyes, turning pages.. its physical. Listening frees you up to do other tasks.
Am i right?
Rock on brotato!!❤
Reading old books when we find em; Fountainhead 1943 edition now. Can reread some lines, but tough to rehear em, huh.
You are correct. Funny too
I don’t have time to read most of time because of my job. So I listen while
I’m working because my free time is pretty much recovering from my job lol .
I'm re reading. The Moons a Balloon written by the old actor David Niven. Good luck from Scotland with the tour . X
I am reading For whom the bell tolls by Ernest Hemingway ❤😊♋🏀🇮🇹 Fellow Cancerian!!!
Reading a book is an active pursuit. Listening to a book (audiobook) read to you is a passive pursuit. Active reading is harder than passive listening. You’re correct. Have you ever tried listening to a book, you’re also reading at the same time. It’s more stimulating. And you miss less. Right now, I’m reading through Elizabeth Strout’s novels. She can tell a good story, akin to real life, and write an excellent character. Although when her characters are adapted to film, for instance, Olive Kitteredge, the film writers only lift Olive’s best lines, which makes her seem less a person. Because they miss her being petty.
You're either reading or listening to the book...FACTS!! 😂 Claiming to be reading, when listening just "ain't right"!!
Sometimes it depends on what you’re listening to or reading. To get to sleep, I read brain numbing fiction so learn nothing. While waiting or relaxing, I like to read interesting things that make me think and learn. To wake up and get a good start to my day, I like to listen to someone interesting that makes me think, learn, laugh and smile. I learn a lot more when listening to someone like this than reading brain numbing fiction that helps me sleep.
I agree with you. Maybe it's a Chicago thing lol. Love from Evanston IL
I love to read books but I do not retain that way right now. So in audio I retain the info. My learning style has changed. If it goes back, I will gladly read
I like books cause I don’t know what to do with my eyes if I’m listening to an audiobook. If I close them, I fall asleep! Current reads include Prophet Song by Paul Lynch, We Must Not Think of Ourselves by Lauren Grodstein and The Art Thief by Michael Finkel.
Absolutely right boss 💪
I listen to many books. It's definitely not the same as reading the material for yourself.
I make it a point to clarify if I've read a book or did the audio version.
I recently finished the Audible versions of ....
The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch
The Happiest Man on Earth by Eddie Jaku
Bill O'Reilly's ..Killing the Legends
Right now I'm listening to The Two Babylons (Alexander Hislop) &
The Holy Bible (NKJV)
Oh yeah... & I listened to Sebastian's autobiography, Stay Hungry. Great "read"!
💚🤍❤ Sebastian
I’m LISTENING to “Mad Honey”. The verb is what you are doing. I’m not eating a book if I’m reading it. I’m not reading the book if I’m listening to it. No cheating!
I listen to books when driving. I read books before bedtime. Very different.
When I listen to music, I like to tell people what I've just played. I had a great gig.
The Dublin Trilogy AKA Bunny MacGary Novels by Irish author Caimh McDonnell. They're light mysteries. Almost incidental mysteries, but the voice acting is brilliant, the writer wrote for comedy shows in the UK, and the character of Bunny is incredible fun.
Only twice in my life have I listened to books. The first, Victor Herman’s non-fiction Soviet Union gulag “Coming Out of the Ice.” The story, of course, was extraordinary, and one I’d actually read many years before. The no-nonsense human narration in the audio version (9 cassettes) actually added even greater import to the tome. The second book I listened to was one my college girlfriends recommended. It was fiction, God-awful, and too tortuous to finish. After forcing myself to listen in pieces for hours, I could only think of how much of my life I’d wasted, even though I’d multitasked doing chores at the same time.
The Prince by Machiavelli. I sat down in a Barnes and Noble, and I was thinking, “what book could help me explain this stuff that I’m going through?”, and I thought “Machiavelli” and sprung up and immediately and went and found it. Good read, asl also a short read.
I agree.
Audiobooks are coinvent, helpful, have their advantages.
Reading a book is (in my opinion) FAR MORE beneficial/satisfying/Entertaining.
*at this point audiobooks are necessary for me.
You are CORRECT. Also- a great vook I just finished is BENEATH A SCARLET SKY by Mark Sullivan. True story...and amazing.
'Audio Listeners': "To read or NOT to read? "Not."
I do both, but if I listen I say so.
I don’t agree Sebastian. However you take in the literature it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter how it gets into your brain. The only difference between Someone that reads a book and one that listens is that the reader has a better attention span and more time on their hands. I love books. I love taking in knowledge but I don’t have the time or the attention span to read books. I have a shelf full of books I’ve read some of them. Teachers read books to us in grade school and high school. That sparked my interest in reading. I found it comforting to have someone read to me.
I’d have to listen to a book 6 times to get anything out of it, even then i know i wouldn’t get it all
I'm listening to Dungeon Crawler Carl. The Princess Posse is in the house.
It’s like “smelling” cake by licking it, or “licking” a stamp by smearing it around on your eyeball - Different head-holes used, NOT the same! It ain’t right.
I’m reading a mystery by National Marsh titled False Scent. I enjoy her work. And I’m reading Being Mortal by Atul Gawande, a recommendation from my 16-year-old granddaughter.
I’ve not been to a live event since 2005 but I will be at your Houston show.
Haha, my business partner & I get into this debate all the time. He speed-reads, I listen.
I did hear a life-hack that you can read WHILE listening. Apparently, you absorb more following along to a physical book while listening.
💯 ❤ u man!
Not true that you’re not as smart. You’re still digesting the material the same as if you were reading. Maybe you’re not as good a reader as you can be if you always listened. But you’re just as smart as the reader for listening.
Love my books. Read every day as for listening to a book it’s a nice idea but it’s not using your eyes which when you read words your brain has to comprehend those words and sentence structure and your imagination comes into play. You picture in your head the scene that’s unfolding as you read. Listening to a book kind of takes that away from you. I like to read a book because it’s more personal and holding the book is nice too.
Great question! I think it depends on one's attention span. It would be a good experiment to see how well two people, one listening and one reading the same chapter in a book and then answering questions at the end of the chapter. There's your next episode Sebastian! You're welcome. Hahahahahaa!
I agree with you.
I see the word “tree” in my mind when i hear it not an image of a tree.
So listening to a book is reading to me because i see the text in my head like the banner scrolling by at the bottom of the tv screen.
Yes its pretty rare.
I read books for decades then I switched to audio books 12 years ago & I can't shake the feeling that I'm cheating, I definitely now say that I listened to a book not that I read it.
I am reading the Bible kjv through. I started last fall, during the fall feasts for Israel 🇮🇱, and I am now at Revelations. I am pleased with myself for making the effort. It's the best book ever js
For me, it's harder to listen to books because my eyes are wondering and checking things out around me! That said, can't say you are reading a book if listening.
I love audio books because I'm a slow reader.
To kill a mocking bird is a good one. I actually read the whole book. Jane Eyre, the grapes of wrath, in search of lost time Marcel Proust, James Ellroy the black Dahlia. Those are just a handful from my book list.
It ain't Right!!! 😅
I do both and simultaneously…yes, I’m one of THOSE. My comprehension becomes more “acute. “. Lol. But presently listening to The Devil In The White City by Eric Larson
Also West With The Night Superb!
Next stop in my library is Clementine by Sonia Purnell
they might be different but at the end of the day both the listener and the reader know the contents of the book. Audio books work great when on the treadmill, well at least for me they do.
Same words, less eyestrain. I am "reading" The Secret by Lee Child (Jack Reacher series)
