  • Have you ever seen a person lean forward excessively during a squat or raise their heels? What does it mean and how can you fix it to avoid pain and performance issues?
Excessive leaning forward is a common fault that trainers should be assessing when performing the NASM Overhead Squat assessment since it often indicates limited ankle mobility and/or tight calves. You need to understand why it happens, but also how to fix it.
In this video, Axiom Instructor Joe Drake, discusses the cause of excessive forward lean and introduces multiple ways to address this common issue and improve ankle mobility.

I wouldn’t pull the toes up. That will use your overactive synergist EDH and EDL. The anterior tib won’t get activated. Instead curl the toes down while dorsiflexing. You’ll thank me later.
