    When the Cascais - Guincho cycle path / ciclovia was opened some 25 years ago I was a teenager and it was advertised as first the dedicated cycle path in Portugal. Although many new cycle paths have now opened it is still one of the easiest - flat all the way - and nicest - with those gorgeous ocean views and the impressive ocean as your travel companion. As a tip for the new cyclist it will be slightly shorter to take the inland streets to Guincho (missing the sea view but crossing the rich villas and golf areas) and then return via next to the ocean. Besides being slightly shorter the wind is typically present and predominantly coming from the north (or west) so it will fight you going Cascais - Guincho while giving you a gentle push on the other direction.
    As a frugal traveler myself I visit a lot by bike and here is a local tip: taking the bike on a train in Portugal is free both on suburban and intercity trains - for the latter you need to mention it when booking a place because there are limited spaces and you will then get a reserved seat close to the bike parking place. On top of that trains are cheap. For IC train booked online and well in advance (min 5 days) prices can be ridiculously low (= ie pay as little as eur 4 for a 200 kms trop IC train with bike). Riding a bike in Portugal can be a wonderful experience but local knowledge and good planning counts a lot since the wonderful routes are not always well connected to the rest.

    Very nice video about one of my favorites beaches in Portugal, Guincho. I use to go to that beach several times during summer. It's a little windy and the water is cold with big waves, but the view is charming. It was there that was filmed one scente of 007 - On Her Majesty Secret Service (1969) with George Lazenby as James Bond. In the restaurant you have find closed "Muchacho" you can find some actors photos, such as very important persons that use to come to this portuguese spot. I hope you enjoy your stay in Cascais. Cheers from Portugal.

I have watched your video as well as a few others along the walk to Estoril and while slightly interesting, I think it would be a bit boring over a slow walk. Sensible Mandy - you never know when the edge of the cliff is going to give away! Did you have to push your bikes along the beach at Praia do Guincho or were there lockable sites up on the road? How long did the ride take you?

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  2 роки тому +4

      Hello Christine. With my vertigo, there's no way I'd go near the edge of a cliff! We were able to lock our bikes to one of the (maybe) 4 bike racks at the end of the cycle path... I'm sure they'd be popular in summer. It took maybe 2½ hours to cycle there as we kept stopping to take photos and enjoy the stunning scenery. As I needed the loo, it took maybe 45 minutes to cycle back, could have been less! 😃🤣 ~ Mandy

    I found a few days ago a letter sent to local authorities, in 1996, where I suggested that they could build a specific way for cyclists to go from Cascais to Guincho. I kept the letter where they replied that it was not necessary because cyclists could use the road used by cars. A few months later they changed their mind. Fortunately for cyclists who avoid cars constantly overtaking them.

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  2 роки тому

      Hi Ryan. Good question, and easily answered. We upload 1 video per week, and like to take loads of footage. For example, we spent 5 days in Braga and made 4 videos, so that was 4 weeks. 3 weeks in Alcobaça and 4 videos. We'll always be behind unless we don't film anything for a couple of months, and as I love capturing memories and experiences, that isn't going to happen 🤣😁 If you've been watching for a while you'll know we like to wander around and show different things about a place, and our viewers seem to like that! 😁😃 ~ Mandy

      @@FrugalTravellers I’m one of your viewers and I like that too. Is the whole, “once a week video” set in stone? I know you will have a routine and it’s the way you do things but does it have to be rigid? I remember watching a video last year and lee commented about watching the final of the football and I couldn’t figure out what he was talking about but then it dawned on me that he was talking about the euros about 2 months later. 😂 it confused me.
      It’s only a suggestion, and you’re free to ignore it but I probably wouldn’t let the videos get too far behind. Although none of your content is time critical I.e. discussing entry requirements or changing visa rules or changing covid status it still feels like I’d prefer to be in the moment. If that makes any sense? Just an observation.

      @@ryanbooth8421 I totally understand that people want to see where we are in the now, which is why we recommend following us on Instagram or Facebook, as those posts are far more up to date. We struggle making 1 video per week with our old laptops so wouldn't make more, and the only other viable option would be to make longer videos, and they don't always work. I'm not sure if we'll even be able to keep up with 1 video per week once we start travelling again, it'll be interesting to see how that pans out. Short answer, if people would like to see where we are now, check out our social media accounts. ~ Mandy

      @@ryanbooth8421 Thank you for your feedback. It is always good to hear ideas from viewers, even if it makes my heart sink to read them 🤣 I think it took Lee 4 weeks to make the Himalaya video, with his 4GB laptop giving up the ghost ¾ of the way through, and every 12 second voiceover clip taking 20 minutes to upload. We are definitely getting new or refurbished laptops soon so that will make editing a lot faster, and we can take it from there. Maybe one day we'll be as big as Gabriel Traveler... but I sincerely doubt that 😁😂 ~ Mandy

      @@FrugalTravellers you have to remember I have no idea about the complexities of making videos. So my comment is kind of ignorant. Not that you ever have to explain yourself to me, your break down of the situation explains exactly where you are.
      To be fair, I’m the same with most things in life; scarcity. I.e. conserve my petrol, leave, battery life, food, money etc. I imagine it’s the same with videos; it’s nice to have a safety net of videos already created in case you wanted to have some down time for whatever reason. Then you still have the ability to upload.
      Keeping a channel going this long, consistently, week-in, week-out is something to be proud of.
      A lot of Gabes videos are unedited and uncut. Not that I’m saying he doesn’t spend time editing because I’m sure he spends a lot of time doing it. He churns out content for fun and his channel is a UA-cam juggernaut. I think he’s just super focused and his channel is different to yours in its approach. His channel appears more conscious of the business aspect of UA-cam because it’s his sole income, which in turn feeds his travelling bug. Whereas, like you mention Mandy, you just like filming and creating memories. Not necessarily in it for the business. Therefore, the UA-cam isn’t your number one priority in life. I could be way off the mark but I wouldn’t worry about comparing yourself to the legend that is Gabriel Traveler.
      Mandy, always a pleasure chatting and I look forward to your upcoming videos.

    Hi guys. Stumbled across your stuff recently and really enjoying your videos - my wife and I have just decided to take 9 months experimental career break.Start in July. I had kidney cancer back in Dec and had it successfully removed and it made me re-evaluate my priorities. We have a budget of about $60 per day ($30 each) - is that realistic? We're going to eastern europe, turkey and SE Asia. If the experiment works then we'll maybe take our early pensions and run for the hills!!Do you have to do housesitting and Workaways to manage on your $40 per day budget or are those activities just extra budget boosters? I'd love to see more cost of living videos (for 2020 prices) - are you planning some?

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Keith. It's great that you enjoy our videos. I'm so pleased for you that you are recovering from your kidney cancer and your future travel plans sound really exciting. We wish you all the best with them. In answer to your questions... We travelled through Turkey and a lot of Eastern Europe in 2019-2020 and our daily budget came in under your budget for the majority of them. For example each per day - Turkey $30, Romania $16, Moldova $16, Hungary $17, Poland $12 (4 months of Covid lockdown kept the cost down), Ukraine $21, Baltic states $17.
      We were travelling on a tight budget, sometimes sleeping in dormitories, walking a lot, avoiding expensive activities. It all depends on your style of travel and comfort level needs.
      Take a look at a blog post we wrote our website on a breakdown of our travel costs for a year in 2018.
      frugaltravellers.com/how-much-does-it-cost-to-travel-the-world-for-1-year/
      It takes a while to make the travel costs breakdown videos but we do intend to make more in the future. We've been doing the house sitting in Portugal for almost a year as we've been waiting for the world to open up again post Covid. It certainly saves us money as our budget has come in at less than $10 each per day during that time so i'd say it's a good way to take a break from travelling when you are doing it full time and gives you more to spend when you are ready to go again.
      I hope this has helped you and wish you all the best. 👍😊 - L&M
