You know when you visit a place and fall in love? That's Cascais for us! We spent 18 days there doing Workaway, and made a series of videos. Check this one out: ua-cam.com/video/7aq0Zn1M5T8/v-deo.html
Hello Merry, and welcome to our channel! We're so pleased you found this video helpful. We had an amazing time in Cascais and wish we'd had longer in lovely Estoril. Enjoy that great coastal walk! ~ Mandy 😀😁
Hi Jen. We really enjoyed Cascais so made a few videos about the area. 😁. Back in the PDR - Peniche area again now. We keep finding new places to fall in love with! Hope you are well. 👍😁
Fantastic video-as always. While we visited Cascais in early November 2021; only your video from 3:00 to 6:00 was familiar. So thanks for broadening our familiarity w/Cascais-particularly the city park and library. Looking forward to your upcoming videos. Cheers.
Thank you, lucchese20. It's great to hear that we've already shown you something new in Cascais, as we really enjoyed our time there. That park is absolutely beautiful, we went back a few times. Thank you for always being so wonderfully positive and supportive - we love reading your comments! 😁😃 ~ Mandy
That's so lovely, Trina Maia, thank you so much for your lovely comment 😃🙏 We love just walking and exploring new places, and sharing our experiences with others! ~ Mandy
Be careful of them nature walks When I was France nice sunny day with some freinds saw a sign Balade naturist, soon found out it didn't mean nature walk, thine eyes were blinded lol. Thanks for showing art and ceramics 😎👍
Palácio Estoril: During World War II, Portugal was a neutral state. Besides being the point of departure for Jews and others fleeing the Nazi madness to North America, Lisbon was equally an important espionage hub, with agents and double agents tailing each and sometimes meeting openly in the capital’s bars. One of these agents was the Serbian spy and British double agent Dusko Popov … a character who fascinated Ian Fleming when, in 1941, the two men met in Estoril. After a brief pre-war career in journalism, Fleming was now working for the Naval Intelligence Division, as personal assistant to its director, Rear Admiral John Godfrey. In May 1941, Fleming and Godfrey visited Lisbon together on their way to Washington to promote intelligence cooperation with the Americans. British Intelligence wanted the Americans to create a foreign intelligence agency similar to MI6. In Washington, Godfrey met with the American President, Roosevelt, while Fleming assisted in drafting a charter for the new agency, to be known as the Office of Strategic Services, the forerunner of the CIA. On the return journey to London, later that summer, Fleming again stopped off in Lisbon, deciding to make his headquarters at the Palacio Hotel in Estoril. Frequented by exiled royalty, the Palacio attracted Fleming because it adjoined the Casino where he could gamble and also had a bar that served excellent cocktails. Like Fleming, Popov was a gambler with a taste for women and drink. Godfrey had asked Fleming to take a look at the dashing double agent’s activities. Fleming had met the man who would later inspire him to create the character of Bond in his series of spy novels.
@@FrugalTravellers Thanks Mandy, but I only copied / pasted part of an article. I've always been amazed about that Ian Fleming story. It's probably fair to say that if he would not have been in Estoril at that particular time, James Bond would have never existed.
That's so lovely... in a month's time we will be in Praia d'el Rei! Wishing you all the best for your move to beautiful Estoril, and maybe see you there someday! 😃😁 ~ Mandy
It's always so nice to hear from you. Lee and I are both well and are enjoying the lovely weather this weekend. We hope this finds you both well! ~ Mandy
Hahhha... it really was a lovely, warm day 😃😁 Everyone else seemed to have it in their heads that as it was winter, it should be cold, so insisted on wearing their coats 🤣😂 ~ Mandy
20 years later and the casino still looks the same 😂😂 i won a prize there in 2002! Cascais is beautiful the coast is ok , it’s pretty but my favourite coast in Lisbon still is Praia da Rainha and Waikiki in Costa da Caparica . The beach bars there are really nice too and more affordable ! Took me back to my teenage years and early adulthood! My name was on that wall with the tiles 😇😀 ~ Sara
We haven't been to Costa da Caparica but it sounds amazing! I can imagine that the casino will look like same in another 20 years! How cool that your name was on that wall. We really enjoyed the walk to Estoril, it was such a mellow way to spend the day. Thank you for the advice and for your lovely comment, Sara. It is always wonderful to hear from you 🙏😁 ~ Mandy
Great walking tour video, as always! Last year, we did the same route as you did (only 1st half, it’s was a quick day trip, we turned around half way). Can’t wait to go back again, love Cascais
Hello Adrian. Thank you for your lovely comment. It's difficult to work out as we kept stopping to film and to look at the beautiful view. It certainly seemed a lot shorter on the way back, with less stops, so I'd say it could be done in under an hour. *I've just checked Google Maps and it says 3.4km, taking 46 minutes. It's such a beautiful walk and I'd so recommend it 😃😁 ~ Mandy
Another great video! I would love to see you walk the Camino! Just an idea, but how about having viewers sponsor one day of the Camino for each of you. For example, 1 day, 1 person would be $50. I would totally sponsor a day!
That is such a lovely idea, Renae. It's not something we'd ever thought of, so thank you for the suggestion and for your generous offer! We really appreciate your kindness and support! 🙏💕 ~ Mandy
Have you guys visited Aveiro???.., is a really nice cute city, also if you ever go, visit praia da vagueira, there are many beaches around there, more lay back places, very affordable, not as fancy as Praia da Ribeira, but still super nice, more as a fishing town but very lovely place to be
Hello Graciela! Thank you so much for your brilliant suggestions - we haven't visited Aveiro yet but it's definitely on our list! I've made a note of Praia da Vagueira as it sounds amazing. Hopefully we'll have the chance to visit sometime this year! 😃😁 ~ Mandy
I lived in Cascais for 4 years - it's a wonderful place! Would give the marina a miss, though....too touristy and boring. However, the paradao, or rather, the seafront path, is beautiful. But be careful: they have terrible high waves sometimes, which have killed people, so don't underestimate the waves. The fruit, vegetable, fish and flower market is on Wednesdays and next to it there's a clothes and pottery market...very cheap and original stuff, also second hand for you bargain hunters. If you want to eat well and cheaply, get a taxi to take you a few minutes up into the hills, where it's more authentic and so cheap, but not for sophisticated soulds. Tamariz is for tourists! I would avoid Estoril, unless you're into gambling or want to see the prime minister buy his pastries in the local bakery - by the way, he's often down at the beach in Cascais and talks to everyone. Very approachable! You'd never see this in the UK. I absolutely love Portugal.
Thanks for all of those useful tips, Kate. We've moved on from Cascais now but may be back so we'll keep them in mind. Who would imagine any high profile figure like that mingling with the common folk? Although Cascais is a little different! Lovely part of the country. We really enjoyed our time there. 😊👍 - Lee
Dont say "rata" is a very ugly word for the female genitalia, the proper name is praia das moitas(beach of bushes). Dont know why, but that horrible name stuck somehow.
Thank you for taking the time to teach us a word that shouldn't be used... that nane is to be found everywhere online, with no one else mentioning that it's a slang name! This is why we appreciate local knowledge, and people taking the time to comment ~ Mandy
