I watched the documentary after your last video and fell in love with his work (and him a little as well)! I even felt some sort of pain when i realized he is no longer with us. I loved how he said he just makes colors work together, regardless of color theory. And he does! Thanks for introducing him to me Jackie and thanks for all your beautiful videos!💖🍀

I've been so excited for this video to appear in my feed. I'm so grateful to you, Jackie for sharing your journey. I had never heard of Rex Ray until you introduced his work last week. I ordered the book, it will be here next month ( It is coming to me from the US, I'm in the UK) I was amazed by the volume of paper collage that he did. I so wish we could have had a tutorial from him. I would never have been interested in his style several years ago, but that's because i had no idea it was created just using painted papers. I thought it was paintings. I love all you created. They are your own style influenced by him. I am with you on the Grease film. I'm exactly the same with others. No matter how many times i see them, i spot something i previously missed. 😊

Wonderful collages from you, Painted Paper Queen 💖!
Number 3 is my favourite one ... love the colours and shapes of all elements.
And I feel you! I love collaging, but don't enjoy the cutting. Maybe cutting on the canvas like Rex Ray would turn this tedious part of collaging into a fun process.

@@PaintedPaperStudio I’m new to your wonderful page! Have you ever tried newsprint or that paper they use to wrap items at stores? A gallery owner (who never knew him and was only guessing) said they thought that was what he used. 🤔 I know he would create papers, like his famous wood grain, and then have it printed.
BTW, what caught my eye scrolling through YT was your use of medical table paper. I’m an esthetician and artist and I’ve been using table paper for collage for a few years. Thanks for your tips on transparency! 💡

Interesting video and I enjoyed it a lot. I love Rex Ray too and it is amazing how complex his work became the bigger his compositions got even though he was was working with similar basic shapes. I thought of Keith Haring when I watched the video not because their work was the same but they were both at a pivotal point in their work before their lives were cut short. I saw an exhibition of Haring's late work in NYC and it was amazing! You could tell seeing it that he was ready to burst out with something new. I felt that way when I watched the Rex Ray video you shared with us. Watching you develop your work just in one session, I felt like with the last collage that you created (with the round, teal and checkerboard texture shape at the bottom) was an aha piece because it looked like Rex Ray stepped back and let you find your own way. His influence is still their but it felt like Jackie was taking the lead! Thank you so much for sharing your passion for Rex Ray with us and I hope that the workshop is a great success. Cheers! 🥰

I was impressed (in the doc) how he cut free-hand with a blade.... a scissor is much less precise looing at his work and the free cutting, in one stroke, makes the lines so perfect.... one needs nerves for that....! Ah Matisse also sneaks up and he's a hard one to ignore....

Jackie love these videos. Regarding the glue….. A while back I started messing around with methyl cellulose glue pastes (used in book binding). It is reversible with water. There are a ton of YT videos showing how to make and use so it might be your answer. There is also a version with wheat paste but I have not tried. Once you have the pieces in place you can lock in with medium.

Hi Jackie, Loved this video! I see that you apply your medium with a brayer. Do you have to wash it off asap or can you wait to wash it off? Do you only use that specific brayer for medium? Thanks for everything. Sondra Borrie

Thank you, Sondra - I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Ideally, you would wash or at least wipe down the brayer. I did not 👀 - it dried to a gorgeous glossy finish overnight. I could continue to use it without removing the dried medium, but I won't. I love the quality of the rolled paint when squished between the rubber of the brayer and the paper. The dried medium makes it too "slick." and I don't get that same quality. I soak my brayers in Murphy's Oil Soap to remove any paints/mediums. I did a whole video on it here: ua-cam.com/video/5N50vN657RQ/v-deo.html. Thanks for watching! 🥰

I searched for hours to find out about the glue… never got a definitive answer!

My good friend worked for MOMA in New York about thirty years ago, and he said that the preferred adhesive among virtually all artists was YES! Paste, if that helps you at all. My preferred glue sticks are UHU.

Many of the collage artists used Exacto knives. Some worked freehand, while others cut around (traced around) a cut-out cardboard shape.

One trick to cutting paper with scissors is to make a continuous cut, feeding the paper into the scissors rather than pushing the scissors into the paper. Sorry I can't explain this in a better way.

Jackie I think you could be right re wallpaper paste. I think it may have been some type of lining paper as you would get a really crisp line cut from that but who knows. I’ve got all of Rex’s books and I love his art. Thankyou for this video.x ps. I’ve always thought he may have used photo paper too in his work. Just another thought.x

Hmmmmmm - interesting ideas Sasha. It could have been lining paper for sure. The photo paper idea could explain getting such crisp lines, but I don't know. I guess we'll just have to experiment! 🥰

It could also be wheat paste. The paper takes a lot of abuse, I wonder if it's wallpaper.

Hi, can i ask a question. I have been using mixed media paper 300gsm. Everytime i make collage on it the paper crumples so badly. Even when i try to flatten it afterward it still crinckles when i try to mount it. Do you have any advice please.

Hi Tracy, one thing I would suggest is to paint gesso on both sides of the paper before starting your collage. Give that a try and let me know if it fixes the problem. 🥰

I have struggled with the same questions about cutting papers. I was amazed, as well, by his graceful cuts of “wet” papers. Also, his collage pieces don’t seem to buckle or stretch with glue. I have to wonder if he strengthened his papers with a medium before using them for actual paintings. ??

He might have, Dawn. In one part of the documentary he pulled a painted paper out of a tray with (what looked like) water in it. Maybe it was water, maybe he had some alum in it 🤷🏻‍♀️ I am going to have to investigate further. 🥰
