On the tune Little Gray Mule/the Wild Boar Holcomb employs many "double-thumb" and a few "drop-thumb" techniques while playing the tune overhand style (aka "clawhammer," "frailing" etc.). During a 2008 interview with the late Mike Seeger for Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, George Gibson of Knott County, Kentucky said his father, Mal Gibson, often used his thumb in a similar manner: working double-time on the fifth string--a technique I call "double-thumbing." Gibson said his father's thumb "did a dance" on the fifth string.

Tapping his foot on the upbeat, chewing tobacco, singing and playing a banjo all at the same time. That would require considerable ability. Of course then there is that voice. I wish I could have met this man.

brilliant ! Roscoe Holcomb is the true pioneer of American Folk music. He was a very talented musician, with a strange voice, but so powerful. Yet he was not proud at all, even humble. A great man !

He is a National treasure. A real fella. I especially like how explained playing. He didnt take out the banjo or guitar very often. If youre a real working person you just dont have the time to play a lot. You never forget or losr the touch. (hes being modest here) ..But when it comes out of the case- it's on.
    Our hearts to you sir.

It really is something. Absence of vibrato, it does something magical, and it really is like a cry.

It’s really cool how into it Pete was. Peete watching and listening and trying to learn from roscoes playing. By that point Pete himself was pretty well known and influential in folk music but him being really interested in hearing and watching Roscoe play is pretty cool.

Can really hear early Dylan once Roscoe brings the 6 string out - obviously one of his biggest vocal influences

I love this recording, thank you for posting this. I had the pleasure of meeting Pete when he was a little older & I was a little younger.. One of the nicest people I ever met, its great to see him here in his youth with one of his inspirations. The talent of these two is overwhelming.
