@@russj.5296 Both Johnny and June would reciprocate a few years later when they invited Pete to co-host Johnny's ABC variety special, ca. 1970. There are a few video clips of them performing together that have been uploaded on UA-cam.

Poor John was wired, God bless him. June's a lovely lady, and Pete's a Legend.

I love this comment, it literally covers everything but with sense, I just know by your comment you know exactly what was happening here. June was holding it down, Pete was making sure it was OK and everyone was fine and poor Johnny was out of it. But it's a classical recording of history and I love all three of them, so glad Johnny beat he's addiction and they lived together to end

Yeah but Johnny was honestly pretty animated all along tbh
I recall little Bob Dylan proudly describing Johnny Cash’s bizarre mannerisms and movements to John Lennon but I’m pretty sure Dylan was twice as spun as Johnny here lol
These individuals will all be remembered and will be talked about for time to still come. Kinda like the most notable contributors in the baroque, romantic, classical modernist and all other movements of folk auditory activities across time in the western civilizations as far back as records have been preserved. Archetypes require flawed individuals. That’s art. Sometimes it’s Dark as a Dungeon. King David was a dark character and songwriter and he’s Old Testament so only God knows how old this tale has been coiled back.

I'm not sure if he's wired, or in withdrawl...but he's got more soul on display than a crowd of "normal men". It's hard to find a recording star in this time who did not struggle with substance abuse...those tours...and I doubt it's any easier today. What a show!

Everything about this is just wonderful .June is such a sweetheart. John is high out of his mind but still as brilliant as ever. Pete, of course, is Pete as always. Such a crucial piece of History and it's amazing that it was documented. We are so lucky to live in a time where we have easy access to videos like this.

So sorry that this show only ran for less than 2 dozen episodes, as every one is a treasure of homespun music history. June Carter was so humble, respectful & sweet. And, if not for her, Johnny would probably have drank himself to death long before he actually died.

    I am a pilgrim and a stranger
    Traveling through this wearisome land
And I’ve got a home in that yonder city, good Lord
And it’s not (good Lordy it’s not) not made by hand
    I got a mother, a sister and a brother
Who have gone to that sweet home
And I am determined to go and see them, good Lord
Over on (good Lordy over on) that distant shore
As I go down to that river Jordan
Just to bathe my weary soul
If I could touch but just the hem of His garment, good Lord
I believe (good Lordy I believe) that it would make me whole
Now when I’m dead, laying in my coffin
All of my friends all gather round
They can say that he’s just laying there sleeping, good Lord
Sweet peace (Lordy sweet peace) his soul is found

@@Cosi91AFAIK JR cleaned up around the time him and June got married. IDK about his drug use in the 70s but I know he got Anita (June’s sister) pregnant at some time around then. His son recounts that his dad relapsed in the late 70s and how embarrassed he used to be when he would pick him up from school and such. And of course June had her addiction problems as she got older too. When all is said n done; these things are just blips in the radar. The world is better having had JR and the Carter family in it, thank God

Pete Seeger is great he’s like the Mr rogers of music. Johnny is over rated though. I just feel his fakeness against Pete’s genuine love for everyone and the music. didn’t kill anyone didn’t go to Folsom prison told some lies left his wife and got rich playing 3 chords and moving around like Elvis. Over rated.

The Folsom Prison deal derived, as far as I know, from Cash having given a performance there. If you listen to the lyrics of various songs, plenty of them tell a story that would imply the singer was part of the theme, when that is not the case. It's not considered the telling of a lie but, rather, is often total fiction, or the extolling of someone else's story...or the collected experience of many others...just like the dozens of verses of "It takes a worried man" doesn't claim that someone performing it ever had shackles around his own legs, etc. You can't blame the lyricist or performer because others wrongly conclude that their songs reflect their own experiences.
